A neutral would prefer a WCE v WB 5v8. It will be close to embarrassing to knock off Freo & Ess and claim a final against the Eagles.

This is all true, sadly.

They haven't done anything. The formula is simple, we have 3 games remaining. Win them all and we will play finals (unless GWS gives Adelaide the mother of all hidings)

No, we f’d our finals chances with a pea-hearted effort in Cairns. And Metricon a couple of weeks before that.

And anyway, it was actually Adelaide that tanked that game and the points necessary to get WCE into the 8, and to get a higher pick for the eventual Lever trade

When is the AFL going to clamp down on the bulldog shuffle, they get tackled and they shuffle the ball to their favour, it is incorrect disposal, just because you are tackled doesn't mean you can just drop the ball to your teams advantage.  They have done this since there gf year  Richmond adopted it but not as bad

Bombers fans must be excited about next season then! ?

Meth Coke are half the side away from Perth

it is quite staggering

Wish we could play them now

Geez how many times did the dogs choke tonight?? Smashed the eagles in every stat and won by a few points. They are lucky Darling can’t kick

Well clearly we all agree we crapped the bed and put ourselves in this situation but the point was it has been West Coast on more than one occasion that seal our fate

The result has no impact on our season. We have 8% on the dogs. So if we win the last 3 we get in. Unless the dogs score incredibly high scores.
as far as wins go if dogs lost tonight we wouldn’t get in on 9 wins as GWS would if they beat us

Dogs will make it they deserve it we are pretenders...

That was the first top 8 team they've beaten. They are very much in the same boat as us.

You get what u deserve in this game and we don’t deserve to play finals as we are not consistently good enough.

Its pathetic given goodwin was given this team on a platter when Roos left and yet he has STILL managed to screw it up.

Sounds like our r22 clash in 2018.. nicnat, gaff, darling, Kennedy. ?

The denialists still don't realise we've never been capable of beating a full strength premiership contender in the last few years.

Yes I Know.. and they don't like being away from home for more than a few days

Yep, every result went against us this week.

I reckon Dogs will take St Kilda’s spot in the finals.

Dogs have a laughable last 2 games while St Kilda have GWS and West Coast.

Not really a fair comment in a 17-game season.

Just means the Dogs have had to play the good sides already and the Saints haven't.

Yes it does.

The 9-win scenario assumed Collingwood and GWS finished 6th and 7th. It was then us, St Kilda and the Dogs fighting for 8th and if we all finished on 9 wins we'd win out on percentage (so went the theory).

It's now possible that everything could line up for that but we miss out because the Dogs get a 10th win - we beat Fremantle and GWS (but lose to Essendon), GWS beats St Kilda and Carlton but loses to us, St Kilda loses both games, Collingwood beats GC, Dogs win both games. We miss out (assuming we pass St Kilda on percentage, which was always going to be necessary for us to make it on 9 wins). Had the Dogs lost, we'd have made it.

Still, if we win all three we're near-guaranteed to make it (to miss, one of the Dogs and GWS is going to need to make up the 6-8% to catch us on percentage).

No Nic Nat, Hurn, Cripps and Shuey helped the Dogs, who were at full strength and playing on their 2nd home.

That was the Dogs' 8th game at Metricon this year (although to be fair it was West Coast's 5th).

We'll finish the year with no more than 3 games at any one venue.

I keep banging on about this but it's a relevant factor.

I stand corrected.

the way I have been looking at it, we need 10 wins, therefore the dogs doesn’t impact that.

hopefully we can hammer Freo tomorrow so the thought of finals is exciting again

Travel, breaks between games, timing ( playing a side that has many injuries ),  and venues has been more important this year than most.

Having a shortened season has worked against lower finishing teams in 2019 as well .

Technically it does, as it's another side who could finish higher than us even if we get to 10.

Practically, if we win all three we shouldn't lose 8% to the Dogs, so you're pretty much right, but it would have been preferable on all counts for the Dogs to have lost tonight.

Still, if we get to 9 and miss out, the Sydney loss will be the number 1 reason we missed, and the Geelong and Brisbane losses will rank higher than the Dogs' win over West Coast.

They are even worse than us. There I said it!

Because he's not the coach anymore but still getting paid :)

We were missing a few in that game. Who were the Dogs missing tonight? And our game was in Perth with a crowd.

And as to the second line - how many wins do our competitors have this year against a "full strength premiership contender"?

I'd suggest it's an equally valid argument to say the overly negative on here (which you seem to be) could find an asterisk to put against any win we have against anyone.

  • WHAT’S NEXT? by The Oracle

What’s next for a beleagured Melbourne Football Club down in form and confidence, facing  intense criticism and disapproval over some underwhelming recent performances and in the midst of a four game losing streak? Why, it’s Adelaide which boasts the best percentage in the AFL and has won six of its last seven games. The Crows are hot and not only that, the game is at the Adelaide Oval; yet another away fixture and the third in a row at a venue outside of Victoria. One of the problems the Demons have these days is that they rarely have the luxury of true home ground advantage, something they have enjoyed just once since mid April.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
