Max Gawn Ruled Out vs Pies

Interesting that Egan mentioned Brown as a defensive option inĀ Talking Points.

I wonder if he could play back and shift Tomlinson into the ruck?

He also mentioned that Jordon and Sparrow were training 1v1 with the midfield group over the pre season and I forget sometimes,Ā given howĀ strong our first group is, that must be really good the development of these guys. Particularly, if they can get a look in early, like Sparrow has. Jordon is a great kid by all reports, so looking forward to seeing him play. Sounds like he's going to play inside mid too, which surprises me as one of his former coaches told me they used him as a half back.

I should say also that I didn't realise Egan had been "Head of Development" since 2016. I thought that was McCartney's role, at least for a time.

Anyway, Egan is super impressive. He has a certain aura aboutĀ him. I'd play for him, so seems like we're lucky to have him.

Could be a good time to play them

The Melbourne Storm were an inspiration last night, missing key players

We have to play a classic ā€œTeamā€ game tomorrowĀ

Ā

Jack will carry usĀ

Been loving watching him play this year which isn't something I usually say because he can be a frustrating player with his kicking at times. Seems to be more composed now

Watch him go sicko modeĀ

Preuss will be a difficult assignment for Grundy to match his strength and height. Hope Preuss has the tank to follow.Ā

Release the beast. It’s time for Preuss imo. I think Gawn will miss and needs a 2Ā week break. Perhaps back for the Dogs challenge. Ā

'Release the beast...' is just so inspiring with Max unavailable. Release the Beast, release the Beast, release the Beast. I can imagine the potential scars on the Collingwood psyche, right now. No food for Preuss for 36 hours, he's got to be hungry at the first bounce. At 'em, Killer!

It's OK that Pendles is playing ... first target for AVB, and then Preuss. Second target for Viney. Balanced attack.Ā

shouldn't need too much tank to keep up with grundy. grundy has already showed signs of tiring and is coming off a 4 day break

preuss needs to hit him hard at ball ups and not give him any repite. i suspect grundy will limit his range, probably to mainly between the arcs

having saidĀ that, grundy will probably play a blinder just because it's us

I hope Preuss is ready to come off the chain. Ā He is a physical guy. Ā I’m not after 20 possessions. Ā In his scope , I want Preuss to compete and be physical within the rules.Ā

So are we to assume Gawn will be out for another month with this PCL now?Ā  which is the rest of the season really

And the Adelaide game has shown us that whacking someone incessantly behind the play is ok!

No. 50/50 for next week, so you'd think he'd miss the next 2 games at most.

So closely umpired, too ... absolutely acceptable, absolutely too difficult to adjudicate for umpires despite its frequency; we are left with absolute clarity on its approval, its relevance to the game and legitimacy in assisting the umpires to 'even up' a game.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
