The guys spent about 15 minutes discussing Melbourne. Gerard even said in the opening that he thought this was team was the best on paper in the last 25 years. Lyon disagreed with this, due to the fact that too many of the players lack basic fundamentals (e.g. kicking). He pointed to the fact Melbourne persisting with this “red zone” play on at all costs footy, and that we don’t have the skills that can sustain at this frenetic pace leading to some of these horrible skill errors.

Melbourne has persisted with the play on at all costs game style (no.1 play on team in the AFL) which certainly is coach driven and can be backed up by interviews with players such as Gawn.

I think it’s time Goodwin drops the “play-on at all costs” game style as this list clearly doesn’t have the skills to execute it.

Edit: They also dismissed the notion of that the players aren’t playing for the jumper and that Schwartz’s comments were too simplistic (and I agree). The effort is evident with most. The only vision to disagree with this was Lever’s horrible “meltdown”’ (Lyon’s words) where he didn’t even fly for it and then looked to blame others.

I watched the whole lot. Everything they said was absolutely spot on.

Some daming vision of Viney, Oliver Lever and Langdon.

These are senior players who are suppose to be leading the way. Viney was the worse one out of that lot.

healy: "it's not the effort, it's the execution"

"win the ball, don't create damage"

lyon: "i watch this side every single week - they can't kick"

gerard healy reckons we desperately need weed to step up; brown says he needs someone to work with him to develop...justin plapp is meant to have that job hahahahahaha

So looking at the Oppo Score per inside 50 stat we ranked 9th back in the competition with Frost and Omac as our main two key pillars down back. So realistically i look at that and go its not that bad actually.

We then go all out and spend big on Steven May only to see us actually rated 3rd last in the competition for this year on the big of just letting Sam Frost.

How does that even happen?

all comes down the mids

they let oppo waltz thru the centre no questions asked

Blame can't be solely on mids here mate. It's the same personal of midfielder's that were running around back in 2018.

yep, but their workrate has dropped off enormously in two years

and yr right - it's not JUST the mids, it's the mids, the forwards, and the defenders

everyone has fallen off the proverbial cliff, petracca aside

They were spot on with everything they said...essentially it boils down to the fact that Goodwin’s gameplan does not work.

Time to stop being a loser club...hard decisions need to be made and now!

I blame the turn overs. The mids run forward, as they should when your team mate has ball in hand, then someone does an inexplicable turn over that catches everyone unawares and the other team streams forward and our defenders have no assistance.

Again, this is attributed to the fast paced style that Goody demands the team to play which has a high risk of turn overs. It’s a high risk game plan and we simply do not have the skills to handle it. Goody needs to drop it ASAP.

And what do we put this down to? Serious question. And let's not just say Goodwin's game plan. That's far too easy.

Those stats are horrific

All the Frost haters would have found Nick Riewoldt’s comment interesting about him being surprised they let Frost go because he thinks he’s a good defender.  He also mentioned they could’ve had King with the Draft Pick they gave for May

My take is that training is all about structures and should concentrate far more on skills. Basic skills.

Our basics. Kicking, Handballing, Marking, Goal Kicking have dropped off.

I can’t see any other answer if the effort is still evident.

ridiculous to pot the Dees so far this year with a full team then include last year which is most of the numbers.

Would like to see this year in comparison.

The worst part is that our key players were young and inexperienced in 2018 and should be a lot BETTER now, not worse.  they are hitting the 100+ game, mid-twenties sweet spot.  Only Petracca is getting better

Skills cannot have gotten worse for this group, I just don't bloody get it

We go quarters without scoring

Skills have dropped right off since 2018

Frost was embarassing the Lever camp. They had to act.

Agree. Frost had a clanger or two but had 7-8 more defensive efforts than ANY of the current key defenders.  His pace and size was excellent for a key defender but another Goody scapegoat!!

Not according to Clarko.

Frost at his best is borderline AFL standard and at his worst is calamitous

The revisionist history of his playing career is laughable

To give him a three year deal would’ve been foolish

And people still want to tell me 6 6 6 didnt change anythibg. It was all the coaches fault.

Im not havibg a go at yoi WWW just making some observations.

The "red zone" has worked during games but like was discussed we lack t her talent to execute right now.

Either they play players who can execute and drop the onea who can't or change the plan. Something has to give.

It will be interesting because if Goody cant fix it he will be gone.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
