I am mostly happy to write this farcical year off, and get some games into some young guys to prepare for 2021, but then I remember we traded away our first rounder this year. That trade is going to look absolutely embarrassing by the end of the year the way things are going.

I’m sure players who won’t be playing would rather stay home with loved ones than be stuck in a hotel for 5 weeks.
Players cannot leave the hotel except to train or play. It’s not a holiday.

Guarantee not every player left behind is injured, so are they meant to just sit on there hands with no prospect of playing due to someone’s misso taking there seat? I would be livid.

If you wanted to do something positive about the situation that can have a positive effect on the team going forward ( cliche) I'd suggest withholding your membership subs until Goodwin gets the boot. As I see it and no doubt many of us have  and suffered it for years  we have been promised much and been given precious little to hope for , save a taster in 2018 . Well since then mine and many fans hearts have shattered . Well I'm done with just rolling over my Direct Debit !! It won't be reactivated until Goodwin is gone .

Look at the Saints , got a great coach after letting Richardson go who was a failure and Ratten turns it around between seasons and we high another failure to HELP Goodie in the box . You can't make this s@@t show up (sorry another cliche) Who was it that gave Goodwin a 3 year extension , should be strung up . It's just so Melbourne to make bloody awful calls on staff .

God knows I love this club  and sadly always will, and believe we have the players . Goodwin has no passion , he is an empty vessel , no ideas whatsoever . You could put a pump up doll in the box and it would do better job .  Just once could he please just once  smash a phone or kick a door in to show he cares , anything to  show some red blooded passion . But he has no game beyond the rudimentary one he repeatedly brings with him to each and every match

Anyway , I want him gone before next season as you would have guessed by now

I am not sure about others, but apart from the dysfunctional lack of confidence going forward, the greatest disappointment to me was Olly.

He is my favourite player, but his game today just encapsulates our problems. He has no idea what he is doing going forward and he panics and goes sideways and backwards and puts other under pressure and his lack of confidence taking the game on is just mind-boggling.

We all delighted in his early years with his courage and quick-gives and we all thought that once the club forced him into wanting to kick and take the game on  that he would become a superstar - but alas on his effort today - his two B&Fs will be his only awards.

Goody was a tremendous worker, albeit a somewhat dour player, but he knew what to do. I don't understand why he hasn't explained to Olly the road forward with his game.

The result is that the whole side is at the crossroads. It really is quite depressing.

We are a club that’s going nowhere again and will no doubt burn another list of players! Goodwin can fix the continued poor turnovers & decision making, we have 2 marking forwards not getting a game yet we are struggling kicking goals & taking marks inside 50, whilst witnessing Lynch & Reivoldt  taking marks, were is the logic there???

On a related note I intend to watch the replay to count the number of times Reiwolt blocked a Demon defender, usually Smith to let Lynch take a mark unopposed in the forward 50. I thought with 3 umpires they were cracking down on this stuff but not this week.

The Giants aren’t much better than us, they only got 17 scores from 21 inside 50’s with 4 minutes left in  the game.

We’re the bottom team this year. Just watch.

I saw a lot of strange umpiring decisions, but was surprised to see the count almost even at half time...

Post match Goodwin said we are taking 33 players to the hub. Combination of a few younger and older players staying behind. Anyone have any inside word on who isn’t going?

I hope Jetta and Jones are going.  On every level it would be horrible leaving them behind.  If they don't go it would be a terrible way to treat two much loved and loyal servants of our club.

The AFL has not limited how many players can go.  So I think that anyone who is not injured should go.  There will be no scratch matches here so what are they expected to do back in Victoria.  At least in Sydney they can keep learning and developing, especially the younger ones and New and Jonesy can mentor them.

Even tho some have their cards marked we should do our best to keep developing them and give them some chance of getting to another club next year.

I would love to hear what the midfield/forward coaches have to say when reviewing our entries into 50.... It hasn't work so far to bomb it to a contest so why oh why do we not change the plan? The tigers took sooooo many easy marks in defence...

we are 17th on the ladder and no first round draft pick. This club kills me.

For the second year in a row, after making the Prelim... when we are supposed to be contending for a flag from now onwards... that was the plan!!! Ffs.

Yeah but there are plenty of excuses I mean.... Reasons

Think about it for a minute. Jones in next week might just provide some on field leadership but even more importantly Jones so often provides an option, a release for a player under pressure. That was a real problem today, players getting the ball surrounded by Tigers and either coughing it up or going for a laser like pass to a player that was often covered. Why did so many 50/50 chaos balls in contention that were slapped, punched or kicked to no target nearly always go to a Tiger on the outside?  Says a lot about our game strategy.

Why blame Jones or Jetta for today’s debacle?

Execution, execution, execution. That Oliver turnover in the last minutes summed it all up.

Nothing to do with Goodwin or the coaches, nothing to do with the system, everything to do with the players' failure to be able to execute even simple kicks/handballs, yet alone under pressure.

Petracca one of the few exceptions.

Gonna respectfully disagree.  Has everything to do with Goodwin.  He is a damn fraud.  To act so cool in the box and show such little emotion is arrogance.  Neeld sacked after 5 wins and 28 losses.  Goodwin 6 wins in last 29 games.  Yes players individual mistakes are frustrating but its the system week in and week out that creates this environment for mistakes.  The worst decision making we make is in appointing coaches.  Roos, who I admired, and had the respect of everyone spoke recently about how the standout reason for appointing Goodwin was on his emphasis on 'relationship building'  Phcuk that!  Emphasise game strategy and simplicity.  Goodwin is not up to it.  This will continue to be a problem for this club if he remains at the helm.

Some stuff there today to like for sure.  But Viney is likely one of the worst players in the competition.  He is absolutely shid.  Can't kick to a target, cant play on the opposite side of his body.  Cannot impact the scoreboard off his own boot to save himself.

Lever worries me too.  He did when we signed him.  His strength and speed compared to the heart, athleticism, speed and will of Sam Frost makes me wanna cry.

Oliver runs around like an absolute headless chook.  His bloody football maturity is not developing.

Salem, May, Petracca, Hannan, Fritsch. Hold your heads up.  Might be forgetting some.  But not many.

Where the hell is Jackson Goodwin?  Throw him out there for gods sake.  Blood him you twit?  Weidemann?  Some height and strength please.

Our disposal and decision making were pure mince today, yet the game was there for the taking once again. Having the playing group together for an extended period is all well and good but if the current training protocols remain unchanged then fixing things could be difficult. Still, today's sh@t is tomorrow's fertilizer.

On a positive note the Victoria Hotel in Footscray has now reopened and is showing live games again. It's also 500 metres outside the 3012 lockdown zone. My Plan B if I can't get get a table at The Rose next Saturday.

Port Adelaide did the same thing and were leading the comp until this weekend. You are reading too much into it

The Rose in Fitzroy? My local.

no excuse for losing, but how is that the umpires can change the rules for holding the ball, not just this game but this round

all after clarkson complained tacklers aren't being rewarded

again the afl/umpires change the interpretation quietly mid season with no warning

i'm sick of the amateurish way of running the rules of the game

p.s. yet dusty martin when tackled with no prior can just drop the ball in front of himself and not be pinged

Very good Earl. I think we'll be on in the back room next week as there will be an overlap with the Bombers v Roos game. Haven't been in since last season.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
