Rivers has done everything asked of him and  yes He is one of my favourites to get in the team on the HBF by the end of 2020 injuries or not.

All of the training reporters have given Trent the thumbs up and now it's a bit hard not to give him a spot ahead of Salem Jets Hibbo or Hore and Lockhart as most of that group play good on talls or smalls.

The draw will be thrown around and 4 or 5 day breaks will endure that we will play 30 plus msybe 34/5 over the season such is our depth I believe.

Its sad that VFL is Cancelled  but our guys will be At least the fittest and super ready for a Chance  the AFL.

Rivers  will Get his chance and may even take it without being dropped!

Just forget Fantasy teams it's exactly what it's named The selectors pick the real ones !!!

 

 

I think you may have missed my point. Normally in fantasy circles people get some mail or some whispers about who's shaping up to play early and who isn't. I was merely pointing out that he was hot property for supercoachers early which would indicate that someone, somewhere along the line, was of the understanding that he was in line for early games. Not often they are wrong.

 

I found it interesting that despite this mail, and taking kick ins in intra club, that there was no marsh series games and even with Salem and Jones (who is now a forward/back flanker) there wasn't even a mention.

 

Didn't think he would come in as a surprise just asked if any of the obviously very heavily connected people on this forum had heard anything.

Would hardly consider that an over reaction.

I must be one of the few not surprised by the selection of Mitch Brown ahead of Weideman. Sam has been a disappointment for mine. A few flashes of brilliance in 2018 haven’t transitioned into even general consistency. Maybe the selection of Brown might give the young bloke a wake up call? I hope so. We’ve had a few “gunna” key forwards over the years. I always think of David Cordner for some reason....

On Brown, I reckon he is a very smart pick up. A flexible tall with footy smarts who can run (and came for free) is not something to be sneezed at. Might be a tad underrated too.

I do like Weed and don't want to write him off yet. But the fact he got overlooked for a 29 year discarded player is not a good look. While i dont mind chopping out in the ruck, he needs to just settle up forward on a full time basis. I'd be chucking Tmac in the ruck instead.

Still, possibly ANB aside I see why they're picked. 

The way to beat West Coast is to kick the ball along the ground inside F50.  Kick it in the air and you are just feeding one of their strengths.  Four smalls (only three on the ground at any one time) inside forward 50 to apply pressure and gather crumbs.  I suspect Bedford or Kozzy have benefited from Chunk's absence.

Perhaps give some credit to brown as well - he’s worked his but off, came in with the mindset that he wasn’t here to make up numbers. 

weid will be fine - I get this as a forum is a place where people tend to overthink and overanalyse. He’s still a young developing forward. The throw away comments like - needs to pull his finger out are shockers - you guys don’t know how hard he is working and I’m sure he feels the pressure on his shoulders. Think about how this has all panned out for him.

3. 2016 onwards - he is in and out of the side. Has a good debut against hawks, kicking a few goals. Gets injured during the Match and misses the next few games.

4. Consider the bloke he was drafted with, Who in his four seasons has:

- 2 best and fairests

- 1 all Australian

- judged by coaches as the best young player 

and more I’m sure. We all know the kid is a star, one of our brightest, and a fast developer in terms of what he’s achieved at afl level. He was taken 5 picks before Sam. Feel the pressure.

5. Let’s fast forward to 2018 (the key forwards 3rd season) finals series. Sam dominated, showed what he was capable off. He did this not only as a 21 year old, he did this on the big stage, and taking the second best defender. 

6. Hogan leaves the club, meaning the patient approach with Weideman that was accepted by fans is no longer. They have seen what he can do, they demand it consistently now.

7. The dees flop in 2019 - Sam also has injuries. 

8. 2020 - After a good preseason he gets an injury in a marsh series game. Not a huge one, but a minor setback. 

The kid has been in and out, has not had a great run with injuries, and is a young developing key forward. If anyone thinks he needs to pull his finger out they (and I) have no idea what pressure he’d be putting on himself to get the best out of him. Have some bloody patience, he will be fine.

last thought - his dad was a premiership captain for the pies. He has had perceived pressure on him his entire life to be a star football player.

I have taken that all into account as i like Sam and want to see him succeed. 

And it's great credit to Mitch Brown. But for us to become a successful club, it's guys like Weideman that needs to stand up now. He's been in the system for 5 years, and player of his ilk should be right now in the best 22 commanding that CHF role. Instead hes been left out of the side for a guy that was brought in to be really a fill in role player.

Ball is in Sam's court now.

Because we are evolving some potent smalls, I'd additionally like to see some potent, mobile and hungry talls in our forward line. TMac is a reliable backman - he could hold down CHB effectively, with May remaining at FB. In general, both TMac and the Weed are rather static forwards (so thank Heaven we had some developing mid-talls up there in Fritta and The Melk). 

That releases both Brown and Weideman to coalesce in the key forwards roles BUT both must further develop their mobility, space-seeking receipt of the pill.

Brown is showing signs that he wishes to play that way - and for this attribute, he may well be a real asset in the role. The Weed must do similar, creating a two-pronged, leading forward pace machine across at least two, instantly pre-negotiated directions - with grips for marks instead of failed '...first at the ball...' errors from a very hopeful, single vertical leap. If all else is not working or not able to be activated at a given moment, their task is to then bring the ball to the ground for the front and centre smalls - of which Jones in the tutor for the newbies.

The chop-out 2nd ruck role is a waste of TMac's attributes - and those of The Weed - and so requires a spoiling tall, not a classic tapper - we have a few of these getting limited game time in the big league, but I still see Preusse fulfilling such a role (and as a chop-out forward across a game to assist clear away opposition defenders).

I've posted this before but I cannot understand why this tactic isn't used more often, or at least kick to space if there is any.  The amount of times I've seen us go in the air to say Jeffy one out against a tall defender drives me crazy. Just kick the dribbler, most players can do it.

I think people are reading too much into Brown ahead of Weid.  Weid probably didn't train for a week or so with his ankle.  They want a very fit team for today and so Brown gets the nod.  Brown wasn't picked ahead of Weid for the Hawks game and Weid did okay in that game, he actually brings the ball to the ground better than Brown who is more lead and mark.  Weid also is a good chop out ruck.

I think Brown was picked because he was fitter, not better.
