So, if initially I was to provide the name of the player, even at a time when the information was unconfirmed, you wouldn’t be having a goddamn aneurysm right now? My suggestion is that you need to keep your unfounded comments to yourself. That is exactly what they are rumour mongering. Makes you look stupid in the eyes of the public... when you cannot backup your statements. Anyway, I believe you just want airtime pushing false and inaccurate information. I will leave it at that.

Usually raises its head when the economy is booming and they want to keep all the money for themselves then go quiet during a bust. When things go really bad they like to blame the rest of the country and feel they can do better on their own. Perhaps we should annex off the bottom part of Western AUSTRALIA, Perth and below and divvy up the rest between South Australia and the Northern Territory. Or rename it North Western Australia.
Moonshadow 17,678 Posted March 31, 2020 Posted March 31, 2020 Very interesting perspective: https://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2020-03-31/coronavirus-scott-morrison-consensus-jobkeeper/12106334 Shows how petty and self serving politics has been on all sides for such a long time I did have a laugh at this description of Alan Jones: "...he gasped, like a dowager clutching a scented hanky while tottering through plague-ridden streets." 2

Diamond_Jim 12,779 Posted April 1, 2020 Posted April 1, 2020 Two events who still haven't cancelled but they are in the "they've got to be dreaming world" Wimbledon and Tour de France. Both scheduled for June. Imagine a rolling city of a couple of thousand through rural France (even if they banned spectators). Wimbledon without spectators is a long shot but they seem to want the crowd anyway. A lot of the procrastination has to do with insurers and the events not wanting to cancel in advance of government directives etc which would trigger the insurance cover
Diamond_Jim 12,779 Posted April 1, 2020 Posted April 1, 2020 https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/apr/01/captain-of-coronavirus-us-aircraft-carrier-4000-sailors-let-off-ship-die-theodore-roosevelt food for thought... this isn't a cruise ship as the article points out The captain of a US aircraft carrier, with 5,000 people onboard, including an unconfirmed number who have tested positive for Covid-19, has called for help to save the lives of his sailors. The US aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt was in the Pacific when the navy reported its first coronavirus case a week ago. It has since pulled into port in Guam, a US island territory in the western Pacific.

Just saying. Apart from the points you made, one of the main issues now is who would actually participate - many riders can't even train properly, let alone get racing miles in the legs.

I imagine TDF will be coming soon as well, would be interesting to see if the US Open tennis follows suit soon. New York is in a lot of trouble right now but perhaps they think there’s time for them to get things ok by then.

Cannot see mass attendance at sporting events this side of October but the US is a strange beast these days. On a different but related note Ramadan starts in three weeks time. Those who have lived in Islamic countries will understand that Ramadan is a time of large gatherings and feasting from dusk till dawn. Will be interested to see how it is handled. The Chinese grave sweeping month which is just starting has been largely cancelled here in Malaysia. Again this is a big gathering with cemeteries packed with people honouring their ancestors. Edited April 2, 2020 by Diamond_Jim

Interesting to see what happens with Melb Cup.
Diamond_Jim 12,779 Posted April 2, 2020 Posted April 2, 2020 You have to laugh sometimes. Politicians spent weeks panicking us and now they put this out. So the curve is percentage rather than numbers based ??? Early signs of 'flattening the curve': Hunt By Dana McCauley Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt says social distancing and border restrictions are beginning to "flatten the curve" of the deadly coronavirus. "Two weeks ago, we were having between 25 and 30 per cent daily increases," Mr Hunt told reporters in Melbourne. "Now we have seen a number of days which have allowed us to say that we have dropped below the 10 per cent daily figure to single figures with regards to our daily increase in infections. "That means we are beginning to see early cautious, but verifiable signs of flattening the curve."

Not defending the media at all (they are vultures), but the numbers coming out of Europe and the disaster currently unfolding in USA, particulary NYC, would indicate it is way too early for us to believe a couple of flattening days are an indicator that we are exempt from the worst of it. Not that I'm saying you necessarily believe this 2

Blaming the media is a bit short sighted I think. Panic is pointless, but it's far, far less dangerous than indifference. The situation unfolding in Europe and the US is very real. Globally, millions will almost certainly die from this. You can't sugar-coat it. If the media downplay the situation, less people will take it seriously, and more people will die. 52 minutes ago, Diamond_Jim said: Politicians spent weeks panicking us and now they put this out. So the curve is percentage rather than numbers based ??? It IS percentage based actually - pandemics increase exponentially by nature. An increase from 1 to 16 cases might not sound like a lot, but it means the cases have doubled 4 times. Which means that all else being equal, increasing from 1 to 16 cases takes the same number of days as going from 10,000 to 160,000 cases. 1 hour ago, Diamond_Jim said: "Two weeks ago, we were having between 25 and 30 per cent daily increases," That said, those stats are a bit misleading. The key indicator isn't the total number of cases, it's the number of local transmissions. The vast majority of cases two weeks were people returning from overseas, which is obviously slowing down. So, while the 'flattening of the curve' is encouraging, it may not mean much in the big picture. 2

Not that I'm saying you necessarily believe this I am not saying things are not bad, but the media in general are experts in creating hysteria and panic in most situations. Calm heads are needed to provide stability and a sense of direction.
