Core players / top 4 in the best 22? (merged thread)

Not exactly the question that was asked but if you were looking for the 4 players you would most want to be there for 22 games and then some I would say Gawn, Langdon, May and T-Mac. All 4 are high quality and have significant gap to the next up in their role.

Surprised you can leave Oliver out BRFE.  He's #1 and daylight second. I agree May and TMac next.  I actually think we could cover Max with Preuss but I dont rate rucking.

We have good quality depth combined in Brayshaw, Harmes, Petracca and Viney to jointly “cover” his clearance and contested ball winning ability and class. Preuss could do enough to negate at the hitouts but I think you are seriously underestimating Gawns impact around the ground particularly behind the ball.

I wouldn't have Hore in the best 22. Lever, May and Smith are enough in the tall department. Pickett is our only small forward that's why he is in the team.

Can't see Hoare in best 22.  Recently watched 2019 game replays and saw him give away too many free kicks and goals. He would need to improve dramatically.  Right now, I'm thinking that if we need one of Oscar and Hoare, I'm going with Oscar.

I do find it interesting how people wonder or muse as to how many players from one side would fit into other top sides and be effective, and how highly people rate individuals playing in the top team over those in a lower side.

I think the example of Marlion Pickett in this years Grand a Final gives you the example of how any reasonable AFL player could become part of a TEAM and make an impact.

So, I would suggest you could pick 10 players from this years GC side who would fit into richmonds premiership team. I wouldn’t suggest they could all pay at once, but many would those fitting into the team and paying their role.

I would say that Oliver, Gawn, May, T Mac, Melksham, Jetta, Harmes and Petracca could all play in top sides, together.

You look at the Richmond side and they have some everyday, regular players who just play their roles, but as they play in a strong side who plays consistently, they may look better than our players.

Difference between harmes and lambert for example??

I agree with everything you say except Marlion Pickett. He is A+ grade and one of the best footballers in the league.

He’s only played one game but he almost won the norm smith.

He didn’t slot in and play his role he dominated.

Team looks really good, well done.

I really like Smith at CHB, would like to see him play in mould of Sean Wight! OMac good backup.

Hopefully Pickett up to it, Hunt is good as a back up.

I’m hoping 1 Melbourne player can play an A+ game in my lifetime on grand final day.

Malion Pickett didn’t get selected to debut on grand final day for no reason. He is an absolute jet.

Back 6 have a lot of experienced heads but would need good reactive match coaching to cover the players. Tomlinson, Petty, Jones and Hunt have flexibility to cover any problems back there during a game.

Front 6 Is about as good as we can expect. VDB, Petty and Tomlinson can all go forward with a resting mid to cove there.

Mids running off max look good. In that 22 there are 13 players that can rotate through the center.

I wouldn't call a player an A-grader on the back of one great year let alone one game.

With Jetta, I see him at the crossroads after his injury interrupted season. I agree that if he can get back his form and fitness he is a lock to start games. 

At this stage I do not see him as a 'core' player.

Surely Pickett won't be in our best 22, he barely impacted games at U18 level, unlikely he will do much at AFL level in his first year you'd think. Let him get up to standard at Casey for a couple of years.

I too have liked what i have seen, and think he will be and stay in the side before the year is out (even with a full squad to pick from )

Looking at the list as it stands at the moment and trying to envisage a team is an interesting exercise. To my mind we have a group of core players that will be selected week in week out as long as they are in form and fit. These guys are established players in the team that have a solid background of work in their portfolio and are expected to do their jobs.

The second group I have are the players that I call borderline. These are the ones that Are either on the way up developing, on the way down as they age or ones that I think have found their natural level and are below the ‘çore’ standard required.

The third group are the young developing players that need time to develop.

Last group are the Rookies.

So, in my opinion our core players are the following:

·        May (D)

·        Salem (D)

·        Harmes (D/M)

·        Petracca (M/F)

The second group of players is quite extensive and this is where I expect a few people to disagree with me.

In the aging group I have:

·        Jones (B/M)

·        Hibberd (B)

·        Jetta (B)

These three to my mind are running out of legs a bit. All have been excellent players for us but I can see them being overtaken by younger legs as the season progresses.

The next are quality players that need to find their best fitness/form:

·        Hunt (F)

·        Vandenberg (M/F)

·        Neal-Bullen (F/M)

·        Hore (B)

·        O McDonald (B)

·        Weideman (F)

·        Preuss (R/F)

·        Hannan (M/F)

·        J Wagner (B)

These players are of a quality that can step up into he first 2 hen required but we need a few of them to make the move into the ‘core’ group. I am referring to Hunt, VDB, ANB, Hore and Weideman. OMac is there about but needs to have the player around him for support.

Smith (F) is another I have in this group but is one that I see making a big step up this season if he can stay injury free.

Petty (B/F) is an interesting one. I like what I saw of him at the end of the season. Has a bit of an edge to him and has a bit of confidence in himself as well as ability. Injury free could establish himself.

Third group are the young developing/new players;

·        Spargo (F)

·        Baker (M)

These two have played a bit of senior footy but almost need to take a tep back to move forward. Spargo will not be helped with a pre-season injury he is suffering.

Also in this group that we wait to see their development are;

·        Bedford (F)

·        Jordan (M)

·        Neitschke (M)

·        Sparrow (M)

·        Jackson (R/F/M)

·        Pickett (F)

·        Rivers (B/M)

I expect that all of these may well pick up a game or two during the season and it will be up to them to see if they can keep a place.

Lastly, Rookies. It seems to me that the rules are in place now that you can use these guys as you see fit. I know there are rules but the rules now are a lot more relaxed than they used to be.

·        Chandler (F)

·        C Wagner (M/F)

·        Lockhart (F/M)

·        Dunkley (M)

·        Bradtke (R)

All of them except for Bradtke will have roles to play at some time during the season.

Good analysis. I'd reckon Bennell may be a 2020 smokey if things pan out favourably for him in terms of preparation and readiness. I still see OMac as a risk anywhere outside of the Casey team.
