Champion Data Rates the Top 40

Featured Replies

So Jackson was the 4th best player in ranking points at the champs behind Rowell, Serong & Mahony.... so not much of a reach really.

Pickett seems to be the biggest reach, but was still only 0.6 rating points behind Liam Henry so not a huge difference.

Be good if Trent Rivers plays like Shaun Burgoyne, Jordan Lewis and Lachie Whitfield!

I guess if I was Jason Taylor I might read some of this rubbish to somehow vindicate my role and salary at the club. I mean clearly, Taylor has invested years and years of time, effort and process to be seemingly surpassed by an article from a group of Henson characters that have barely feathered.

‘Champion’ data is the biggest oxymoron going around.

They shouldn’t be allowed to publish this shizen.

Going by data, it shows Jackson at 4 was actually pretty bang on, but Kozzie was a big reach (rated 42nd best player).

Rivers was around the mark, and I reckon had he not missed pre-season with glandular fever he would've been a first rounder. Quietly confident we've struck gold there.

Someone has it wrong then if Mahony can get picked at number 34 by Nth Melb...

They don’t rate character, attitude or personality I would imagine.

Going by the table only 5 of the top 10 selected were ranked in the top 10 by Champion Data.

The 5 ranked outside the top 10:

  • Ash - pick #4; ranked 14
  • Stephens - pick #5; ranked 41
  • McAsey - pick #6; ranked 21
  • Young - pick #7; ranked 25
  • Henry - pick #9; ranked 35

So  our pick #12 for Picket ranked 42 doesn't seem like 'reaching' to me!

And in the 10-20 range two selections were ranked 59 and 110 and two weren't even in the rankings.  I'm guessing the various phantom drafts would have been just as close (or as far) from the actual draft.

While the phantom drafts and rankings are a bit of fun and keep the AFL in the limelight they aren't a great guide to what clubs do.

Dan Houston is also a very good up and coming player in his own right. Quite the quartet of comparisons.

I wonder where Cyril Rioli would be ranked on the same criteria.
Players of this ilk don't require bulk stats to have a serious impact on the outcome.

Cyril was a top 10 prospect who slid due to interviewing poorly (pretended to be asleep in meeting with Port so he wouldn’t have to move to Adelaide). They’re not comparable players on output thus far. Hopefully Kozzie proves worthy of the first round selection and tears it up in red n blue.

Kossie was a top 10 pick who slid due to academy bids. Don’t pretend they’re not comparable, it’s disingenuous.

Really? So 11 players are selected before Kozzie and you argue he is top 10!

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
