It is quite disgusting.  I can't bring myself to repost the comment.

Some news outlets have declined to publish the original post.  Ch7 have printed it in this article:  liam-ryans-daughter-targeted-with-abhorrent-racist-online-abuse

So sad that some people think it is ok to post such trash.

His little girl is just a baby.

To translate that for you @old dee, what McQueen is saying that there's still a bunch of drongos carrying on like galahs.

Pol Pot and Chairman Mao would disagree.

As would the Moreland City council and Melbourne University.

yeah rjay pm'd me. was worse than i thought, quite disgusting and sick

i hope he's outed, banned and shamed

Racism aside, it’s an abhorrent comment to make towards a baby. I have a baby and toddler myself and would be devastated if someone made a comment like that directed at them.

It's pretty bloody obvious, isn't it . We live in a racist country that's been like that for ages and New Zealand not so much. This is what we are being re-educated to believe and to live alongside from Murdoch's FOX to  3AW's drivel. There are so many people here that are on the verge of just giving up and emigrating anywhere....

devil's advocate here.

so why is it ok now for those of the neo political correct to call for the removal of statues (etc) for historical figures whose behaviour mirrored society's views at that time?

I don't really need an answer

I hope your last line doesn't indicate a closed mind.  Maybe that example is not OK. Maybe it's an example of a too extreme change in what is PC now or something to debate or find a middle ground (like a plaque under the statue saying what things he did).

Each case needs to be considered. For example, in my view, a statue of that 'hero' Clive of India in the UK can stand, but needs a plaque detailing his role in the famine in India and otehr horrors, though I doubt anyone in India would want to keep such a statue.  On the other hand, only neo-nazis in Germany would tolerate a statue of Hitler even though he "mirrored society's view at that time " -  enough of it to be elected more or less democratically.  (Including the views of a lot of the then British upper classes, including the King).

you seriously think hitler mirrored society's view at that time? you seriously think having a role in a famine mirrored society's view?

my last line just indicated i didn't want to get further off topic. .. as i said i was devils advocate in relation to the excuse afforded to trudeau for the reference to society's view at the time, pointing out the inconsistency when it comes to judging history on today's moral attitudes.

anyway we are drifting a bit far off topic

AFL players of any race, religion etc should limit their instagram comments to only people they follow. Similarly turn off Twitter notifications.

Whilst horrible there’s not really anything legitimate about this comment. No one is killing children, with a traditional weapon or otherwise. It’s a sad attempt at getting a reaction.

Prevention is better than a cure.

If players keep themselves open to this awful abuse then they are needlessly inflicting pain on themselves.

Or we could just hold the people responsible to account and not expect others to have to limit their freedoms to allow for prejudice.

Won't ever happen, and that's not what I said. I merely said people should be held to account for what they say and do.

Not too much of an abstract concept I wouldn't think.

It’s who decides and what parts of history we edit that’s the tricky part .

The AFLPA have already hinted at ridiculous suggestions like banning anonymity on the internet and asking social media sites to strictly monitor comments. All I'm suggesting is players lose a small liberty of having strangers comment on their postings and in turn establish a barrier between the peanut gallery and themselves.

There's still going to be plenty enough opportunity for people to post trash and get called out for it.

13 hours ago, daisycutter said:

Definitely it mirrored German society at the time.   Of course not every German had those views  - socialists, communists, gays, Jews and the few liberals doubtless did not.   I hazard a guess that you might be the victim of your own point about judging the past by curent values, namely perhaps you think Hitler and his government were so beyond the pale that they could not have possibly reflected German society's view at the time.

Anyway, as you say, off topic (though not by much).

Thanks, I'm aware of what I said. Thought it would be obvious that if people are being held to account then others would not have to adjust for their behaviour, possibly didn't explain it well enough. Cheers.

We're going to disagree, which is totally fine, but I think might find that a lot of the problems aren't even to do with a player's own social media. Have a look through pretty much any facebook comments section or 'supporter forum' and you will see absolutely disgraceful comments leveled at players. Sure you can tell them 'just don't look', but that's not realistic either is it?

It's nearly like you're shifting the blame to the players here 'Dee'

Ryan most definitely didn't open himself up to these comments.

Prevention would be to name and shame the people who make these comments then let's see how many are willing to make them when they are fully exposed.

  • PREVIEW: Brisbane

They really had me fooled when I picked them with great confidence to beat the Bombers at Gather Round last week. I should have recognised that nothing is more quintessentially Melbourne than defeating the undefeated early premiership favourite one week and losing to a winless cellar dweller on its way to establishing a record losing streak the next.
