Oh yeh for sure, there’s definitely a pattern of ex-players, coaches and media people being outcast if they’ve been publicly negative about a coach, player or AFL in general.

I suppose my point was that he was very positive about certain people and aspects of the club, if he didn’t feel that way he could have been less enthusiastic with his responses without coming across as being negative.

    I don't doubt his leadership, i think he's the most tradable of our inside midfield group, and there is a decent argument to be made to trade one of them out for some quality on the outside

    so in a team desperately lacking leadership, one of our best two leaders is tradable?  I know he had a poor year but he will be back next year and with hopefully some runners in the team to dish off to he will not be caught as often

    I'm glad I heard this interview. It certainly makes a mockery of all of the doomers and gloomers on this site who refused to acknowledge the injury toll, who kept inventing all kinds of conspiracy theories about the players and the coaches and the training staff.

    So that you have a better understanding of what an "interrupted pre-season" looks like @Satyriconhome :

    “The midfield basically couldn’t do any competitive work. Even 10 years ago, you could condition AFL players with 100s and 50s and 200s (sprints).

    “Now the game is ballistic and change of direction and it’s highly fatiguing.

    “We weren’t equipped for it. We couldn’t do the work that those midfielders needed and the physical contact, they couldn’t do that. Then a tough draw and then a heap more injuries.”

    When asked about the best leaders Macca said that Gawn and Viney were those most aligned to the team and totally invested in the direction of team.    

    Macca commented on one aspect of leadership and I'm sure there are many other off-field aspects he is good at.

    The leadership that fans are crying out for is on-field.  Leaders that have footy IQ, can read the play, help change momentum, ensure the game plan is followed, direct players to correct positions, ensure set plays are followed, bring recalcitrants into line etc etc.

    Viney has not shown much in that regard and until he does he will be criticised for it, fairly in my view.

    Listened to McCartney on SEN. What a polarizing figure he is. Egonamic, been there, done everything type desperately trying to convince he is still relevant. All over the place. So, see ya, thanks for your service and lets make sure we do better next time.

    We had that for the last 3 years in Lewis  though people like TGR see absolutely no benefit in the club taking him on when clearly that was identified by Roos as being a big void.

    I think May and Lever are 2 who identify issues on field and try to address them

    He definitely didn't give me that impression at all. Seemed extremely humble on his time at the Dees and didn't have a bad word to say about anyone at the club.

     

    I find the irony amusing that most of your posts are closer to your description of Brendan.

    We will miss Lewis' leadership. 

    Totally agree that May and Lever are our best bet for on-field leadership.  Viney needs the help and I hope he accepts it.

    As an aside, I'm increasingly impressed with Oliver's on-field direction of team mates (excepting the public spray he gave Fritsch).  He has a good footy brain and his public speaking is very good for his age.  Very good speech at the bnf, one of the few that thanked people.  Wouldn't mind him as captain in about 4-5 years.

    He was paid handsomely for any success he achieved which was none  of any great significance while he was there. Unable to produce more than two blokes who are capable or ready for leadership in 2020.

    I disagree completely. Several years of linear improvement and a prelim with one terrible year seems like a pretty good result if you ask me.  You may as well sack everyone in the club if you want to apply that logic.

    Try and focus. We are talking about McCartney, not everyone at the Club. Developed two blokes who were natural leaders in five years. No success here or at the Bulldogs.

    Focus? More irony as you seem to have focused on the throwaway comment in my post and completely ignored my point!  

    You are either judging his entire tenure at Melbourne off one horrible year where there seems to be multiple extrenuating circumstances or you are just trolling. I suspect it's the latter, so I'm not responding on this again.

    I have always respected Macca and even more so now, not a bad word for Bulldogs and now not a bad word for Dee's. Interesting that he could see that we were nearly cooked going into the Hawthorn final last year and obviously has helped Clarry develop quickly, hopefully our new batch of coaches can cover for him adequately. Good luck Brendan McCartney.

    He was asked about the best leaders at the club and named Viney then pointed out one of his qualities. He sets the standard off field with training and committment. He sets the standard on-field with attack on the footy, playing for each other and the will to win.  Some of the most important leaderships traits imo.

    he is not a perfect leader however and I agree he has work to do in the areas you mention. It can be hard to do that when you are under packs so he certainly needs a lot of help especially from the def/fwd lines to set us up. It is fine to criticise but the criticism of him has been over the top imo - not saying by you but in general. calling for him to be dropped from the LG etc.  he puts in 100% and would do anything for us to be successful   He has earnt respect and I get my back up when supporters don't seem to show him the due respect

    Viney just needs to learn there is more than one way for him individually or as a team to win the ball. At times he becomes predictable in his attack on the ball. His only response when losing is to charge in harder. Once he learns a bit more subtlety and added maturity he can be a very good role player.

    Well, this forum is pretty much made up of two types. Those that excuse the last 55 years of failure and despair, giving pats on the back to paid employees of the Club for doing their jobs and the few of us that demand better. I was like the happy go lucky crowd for 50 years but, no more.

    The most interesting thing he said was referring to younger players who will initially do anything for the team then sometimes stray from that ethos at the next stage of development. That's exactly what we saw this year

      The Casey Demons travelled to a windy Cramer Street, Preston yesterday and blew the Northern Bullants off the ground for three quarters before shutting up shop in the final term, coasting to a much-needed 71-point victory after leading by almost 15 goals at one stage. It was a pleasing performance that revived the Demons’ prospects for the 2025 season but, at the same time, very little can be taken from the game because of the weak opposition. These days, the Bullants are little more than road kill. The once proud club, situated behind the Preston Market in a now culturally diverse area, is currently facing significant financial and on-field challenges, having failed to secure a win to date in 2025.

    • NON-MFC: Round 11

      Round 11, the second week of The Sir Doug Nicholls Round, kicks off on Thursday night with the Cats hosting the Bulldogs at Kardinia Park. Geelong will be looking to to continue their decade long dominance over the Bulldogs, while the Dogs aim to take another big scalp as they surge up the ladder. On Friday night it's he Dreamtime at the 'G clash between Essendon and Richmond. The Bombers will want to avoid another embarrassing performance against a lowly side whilst the Tigers will be keen to avenge a disappointing loss to the Kangaroos. Saturday footy kicks off as the Blues face the Giants in a pivotal clash for both clubs. Carlton need to turn around their up and down season while GWS will be eager to bounce back and reassert themselves as a September threat. At twilight sees the Hawks taking on the Lions at the G. Hawthorn need to cement themselves in the Top 4 but they’ll need to be at their best to challenge a Brisbane side eager to respond after last week’s crushing loss to the Dees on their home turf. The first of the Saturday night double headers opens with North Melbourne up against the high-flying Magpies. The Roos will need a near-perfect performance to trouble a Collingwood side sitting atop the ladder.

      The two teams competing at the MCG on Sunday afternoon have each traversed a long and arduous path since their previous encounter on a sweltering March evening in Sydney a season and a half ago. Both experienced periods of success at various times last year. The Demons ran out of steam in midseason while the Swans went on to narrowly miss the ultimate prize in the sport. Now, they find themselves outside of finals contention as the season approaches the halfway mark. The winner this week will remain in contact with the leading pack, while the loser may well find itself on a precipice, staring into the abyss. The current season has presented numerous challenges for most clubs, particularly those positioned in the middle tier. The Essendon experience in suffering a significant 91-point loss to the Bulldogs, just one week after defeating the Swans, may not be typical, but it illustrates the unpredictability of outcomes under the league’s present set up.

      “Max Gawn has been the heart and soul of the Dees for years now, but this recent recovery from a terrible start has been driven by him. He was everywhere again, and with the game in the balance, he took several key marks to keep the ball in the Dees forward half.” - The Monday Knee Jerk Reaction: Round Ten Of course, it wasn’t the efforts of one man that caused this monumental upset, but rather the work of the coach and his assistants and the other 22 players who took the ground, notably the likes of Jake Melksham, Christian Petracca, Clayton Oliver and Kozzie Pickett but Max has been magnificent in taking ownership of his team and its welfare under the fire of a calamitous 0-5 start to the season. On Sunday, he provided the leadership that was needed to face up to the reigning premier and top of the ladder Brisbane Lions on their home turf and to prevail after a slow start, during which the hosts led by as much as 24 points in the second quarter. Titus O’Reily is normally comedic in his descriptions of the football but this time, he was being deadly serious. The Demons have come from a long way back and, although they still sit in the bottom third of the AFL pack, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel as they look to drive home the momentum inspired in the past four or five weeks by Max the Magnificent who was under such great pressure in those dark, early days of the season.

      The Southport Sharks came to Casey. They saw and they conquered a team with 16 AFL-listed players who, for the most part, wasted their time on the ground and failed to earn their keep. For the first half, the Sharks were kept in the game by the Demons’ poor use of the football, it’s disposal getting worse the closer the team got to its own goal and moreover, it got worse as the game progressed. Make no mistake, Casey was far and away the better team in the first half, it was winning the ruck duels through Tom Campbell’s solid performance but it was the scoreboard that told the story.
