Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Well it's all about balance.

They don't all have to be former players.

Although I think Adem Yze is worth pursuing.

I don't mind where they are from as long as they have passion while at the Melbourne Football Club and want to help it win Premierships.

I want people who are determined to be successful and demand that from those around them.

I am not against recruiting Alan Richardson. But we need more quality people involved with winning Premierships.

People who know how it is done and know how to win.

Successful people breed more success. That is why we need to chase people from clubs who know how to do this and are keen for the ultimate challenge. Mark "Choco" Williams is one of those people but there are many more at Hawthorn, Geelong, Richmond and Collingwood.

All that matters is if they genuinely wish to help the Demons end their Premiership drought.

I’m not trying to dissuade you.

When you see a club like Richmond being managed by a former great, with another as their CEO, how can you not be moved by what is very obviously a strong sense of tradition and camaraderie? And furthermore, how could one not see how it could be one of the major ingredients of the club’s success?

Recruit better people. The only way to improve.

We must be more ruthless with the playing list.

Example 1: Gifting Jones game time to get to 300 I do not agree with.

His career was over 2 Seasons ago.

Richmond have now 7 Flags since 1965.

Respectfully disagree about Jones.

He deserves to get to 300 games.

Even if this year was disappointing.

If you screw over loyal veteran players you poison the entire playing group. Just like what happened to James McDonald.

Having only one 300 game player in David Neitz as a club that is 160 years old isn't good enough. But there are a lot of massive issues the Demons haven't rectified since 1964 onwards.

Nevertheless, I agree with you about everything else.

Fundamental changes are required.

He should earn his spot every week like every other player in the team. If he gets to 300 by doing that, then fantastic. But there’s increasingly less room for sentiment in the modern game.

This is exactly what I am talking about.

Jnr. was retired at the right time, even though he didn’t agree. His Hammy’s has gone. Took months to recover.

Do not forget Jnr had a year off before going up to GW$. He was done.

Jones doesn’t deserve 300 games. He has to earn them. 50 solid games and 200 Ordinary games I see, when I compare him to Top Sides, which is where this Club should be

Robert Flower deserved 300 games if you are talking about deserving

It is too easy at MFC. It has to change, some people will get shitty. Too bad. The Club is bigger

Sentiment should only be earned on a performance basis. Not length of service.

I agree we need a total mindset change at the club

Obviously I have a soft spot for Nathan Jones.

Back in 2012 and 2013 I felt he was one of the few Demons players that tried his guts out. Have always been a fan of his. Even though 2019 was an awful season.

I simply would "like" him to reach over 300 games.

Just as I would like any other Demons player to reach over 300 games.

But you are right...nobody should be gifted games.

Hopefully Nathan Jones has a good pre-season and proves people wrong.

It's just an embarrassment that we have only one 300 game player at the Demons.

And Robbie Flower definitely deserved 300 games.

However, no point worrying about the past.

For 2020 it needs to be about winning and continuing to develop a better culture at the Demons.

We need to figure out proper solutions to be implemented to fix this basket case of a football club.

It's going to take a monumental effort from an army of good quality football people. Nevertheless, I will continue to show my loyalty to the Melbourne Football Club and put my money where my mouth is like I have since 1998.

This Melbourne Members Forum that Gary Pert has organised should be interesting. I just hope we can be given a proper opportunity to discuss effective solutions to our current predicament.

Fair Call Supreme. I am not knocking Jones for trying his guts out or for sticking fat. I have just never rated him more than a Battler. And that has been one of our major problems.

Jack Grimes was in the same category. His first year was very promising, gave his all. But that was his sealing and he was gifted the Captaincy.

Recruitment and development need to be much better or else nothing will change.  In one way I am glad this year was SO bad. It means everything has to be examined and improved, otherwise a lot of Career Coaches are unemployed by June next Season.

Definitely agree with you that Nathan Jones is a blue-collar worker. But his loyalty and commitment can never be doubted.

I greatly enjoyed watching him play in the first 2 finals against Geelong and Hawthorn in 2018. His sheer joy was contagious for myself and many Demons fans.

Sadly I also saw his Wife and children hurriedly get into the elevator to go and see Nathan after the terrible loss against Port Adelaide at the MCG in Round 1 this year. I felt more sad seeing his kids crying and his Wife upset than I was that we actually lost as I could see the emotional toll it takes on his family. That is one of the reasons I would love to see Nathan get a chance to win a Premiership and go out on a fairytale ending. However, sentiment doesn't win you Premierships.

It's actually quite tragic comparing Jack Grimes' career with his brother Dylan.

One played 100 games and captained the Melbourne Football Club to loss after loss after loss. After a bright start he became mentally scarred from all the continuous losing I believe and lost confidence and ability.

Dylan on the other hand started off slow but now has 2 Premierships at Richmond and is one of the best defenders in the AFL.

I agree with you about development. It is crucial.

I thought Brendan McCartney was a great influence at the Demons and helped develop our players a lot. But unfortunately it seems that either he or the club or the players felt his message wasn't sinking in anymore.

We now need fresh voices and fresh ideas to develop our players. Fundamentally they also need to be good football people who have a proven track record and demand success.

I'm ok with some "molly coddling" of players...but there is also a time for sprays amd harsh reality checks.

Either way we must demand and expect high standards by everyone one at the Demons to obtain Premiership success.

Fairy Tales in Footy are rare, we saw one yesterday that was quite amazing. But Jones has had his time, I believe his wage should be going to a recruit or young draft pick. But reality tells me he has squeezed another year. Where he can play I have no idea. Let’s hope he kicks a few goals.

Jack Grimes wasn’t fit enough, too easily brushed aside for a key position player. Hopefully the Club learns about real fitness in a month or two.

I hope we're not scarred by the retirement of James McDonald. Jones should have gone at the end of last year. The fact he's managed to get another year is quite frankly ridiculous.

As you say, what the hell is his role in 2020? He's not a good enough kicker or decision maker to play half back, but this is his only position going forward.

Some good comments on this thread. I hope supreme gets to the forum and puts his points.

its a complicated business. I can remember so many 5 year plans discarded after 3, with never any thoughts of the 10, 20 plus that we have endured.

Theres plenty of mature knowledge in Dland from experienced professional and business people who can add value to our club not only through their membership but through their engagement.

Look at Preliminary Finals over a period of years. They are a massive ramp up in pressure all over the ground from even the week before.

Lot of catching up to do

You're happy for Salem to play on Rievoldt or Lynch then. Good for you. Lol!

What are you talking about?

Salem plays all over the place. What in hell has he got to do with those players?

Half Back is a major Launch Pad for attacks in the Modern Game, thus i call it a KEY Position on the ground.

Stop arguing just for the sake of it..

Agree.....the most skillful players on any team are generally in the backline.....for example Howe, Saad, Stewart, Haynes, L. Jetta, Hurn & Henderson. With the lack of skill in the midfield this year maybe Salem to the mid might help?

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
