Viney won't be going while Josh is still in the house.  Both are very good mates.  It will either be both or neither and i can't see both going.  If they go they would probably be going with Goody also.

Pert & Co. likely to see that option as too much unrest in a short space of time anyway even if it had or has been mooted (Josh + Viney...not Goody)

They wanted him, wanted to ensure another club didn't grab him and I have little doubt part of the pitch was to create a win win scenario. We get his expertise and he gets, within parameters, scope to focus on what he is most interested in. 

Given things are still somewhat fluid I see it a massive vote of confidence in the fd and tbe club that he went with us or didn't just say let's wait a while.

Gee Binman, you are at least consistent in defending the clubs every move. My guess is that richo himself will have a fair say in what his responsibilities are and what his role will be.. What a ridiculous situation  Who do you think this guy is, some sort of coaching superstar. In truth, he is a failure  . And as for the other clubs wanting him so we had to hurry and sign him. Three card trick. And we fell for it.

I am concerned. Second time in two days I have agreed with Moonshadow.  I too got a good feel about the way Petty held his ground up forward.

Yes ok. I agree. But we were no closer to winning games. 

The Coaching reshuffle was the major point though, which didn’t seem to change any methods or gameplan

Not sure I agree completely. These moves must've been part of tweaking the game plan. Moving Fritter and Petty forward gave us better marking options and imo Fritter is more dangerous and creative by foot in the forward 50 than back. More creative by handball too. I believe I saw less long bombs (but still too many) and more lowering of the eyes. The game in NT vs WCE was evidence of this, and we were close to winning that game. That would be Rawling's influence, or was that before he returned as a forward assistant from Casey??? 

My point being that there were indicators that change was happening mid season and while we didn't exactly win a stack of games, some changes are likely worth perserving with. 

I'm sure there will be more changes to how we play as Richo, Burgess and others come into the FD

We need massive change. Not little tweaks, that is what i am getting at. Something collapsed late last year within and it must be identified.

Ah. Haven't watched a single AFL program this year. I don't watch AFL media when we lose and since we barely won, I didn't watch a single ep all year. Interesting they confirmed it...

As for our ball use going forward I think that is very problematic when you have half your team out and the majority of the blokes that deliver it forward missing most of preseason - no practice = less than optimal skills.  I agree we'd be better with more pace, I think small forwards and outside pace is lacking, but you put 9 first 22 players back into the team that played NM in the final round and give the mids a preseason and we are not having this conversation.

As for game plan I think it's interesting.  The Doggies have come alive in the back end of the season playing our 2018 footy.  Essendon played some very good footy with that style.  Brisbane tried to match Geelong at the Gabba with the "down the line defensive" stuff and were losing by 20 odd points at three quarter time.  They played our style footy in the last quarter and won brilliantly.  I'm not convinced that our style of footy is wrong or is dead, it clearly needs fit and skilful players to execute it.

We need to improve on 2018, we need to hone game plans, we need to address weaknesses in our list.  But more importantly than all that we need a good PS, fit players and continuity.  It's no surprise that Brisbane and Geelong finished top 2 this year.  Neither club had an injury really and the 22 had fantastic continuity which is something we just haven't had, even in 2018 we struggles for continuity.  Continuity is totally underestimated by most.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is the wrist slashing and view that we are a horrible footy club in crisis and destitute of players is a complete emotional overreaction to a season from hell.  Much didn't go right but the infrastructure is there for a very powerful rebound.  I don't think there would be one club that has written us off for 2020.

I'm with you B.B. Let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater just yet...I'm looking forward to a 2020 without a stocktaking sale. Whilst some change may be needed, there is much to be gained if unity is maintained. Anyway, to bring this back to the topic...Viney (J) will spite it. In MFC favour. Mark my words.

So far the club has gone with two 'feel good' puff pieces to one departure (Jennings & Rawlings).

Already has something else lined up apparently. Not sure if he's leaving due to that or lined it up due to leaving, but I'm thankful at least for his solid and settled presence over a time our club needed it.

 

If the media is reporting it with detail, I assume it will be announced today. Despite the fact that it says he hasn't informed the club, I believe they've known for some time.

They diidn't say that at all, Tom  Morris reported Viney was leaving at the end of the year of his own accord to take up interests outside of football.

sounds like he's stepping away from working in football

as anyone who has worked for a club can tell you, it is a high pressure, high stakes, emotionally draining involvement
