IN: JKH, Lewis

I'm a Hannan fan, but he looks to be struggling to impact and 7 touches, 0 tackles is not good enough for a wing/hf role. JKH played that role really well for Casey by the sounds of it:

"Another Melbourne-listed Demon to impact the match was Jay Kennedy-Harris. While almost every player struggled underfoot, the smooth-running Kennedy-Harris dominated along the wing keeping on his feet, racking up possessions and providing the key transition link to the forwards. Finishing with 22 disposals, Kennedy-Harrisโ€™ name will be amongst the selection mix come Thursday."

Not too fussed if Lewis for Wagner doesn't happen. Lewis probably deserves it based on form, but Wags' better leg speed could be handy against the Lions.

From what I read from Josh Mahoney, Hibberd has to get through this week's training and he'll play.

Replace Hibberd with Lewis and I agree with your selections.

Yeah for sure, that would be the ideal scenario. I do hope they're extra cautious though and don't rush him again.

Happy for Lever or Hibberd to come in for Wagner.ย  If both available then Petty may miss.ย  Doesn't really deserve to but Lever and Hibberd will give us more.

ANB will be lucky to stay in - no one better at the moment unless someone stands up at Casey.

Still hopeful that ANB will turn the corner, so to speak, stop the fumbles and become an attacking machine. His run is still excellent and perhaps, he needs to develop some more 'courage' at the ball; the green snot goblins should like this and give him a break.

Agree wholeheartedly. But with Lever to come back in where does that leave Petty?

I am a very big supporter of Petty. He shows real glimpse of his attack in the air and plays a bit like Lever with his intercept marking and spoiling.

Wonder whether he is worth a shot up forward?

Played off the bench intermittently, a forward role could assist to adapt and extend Petty's value to the Team.ย ย

Not sure there's room for Petty forward though with TMac, Weid and Smith already there and working well last week. Wouldn't disrupt that, let alone add yet another tall into the forward line when we already struggle with ground balls inside 50.

I was thinking similar thoughts, LN, but he needs some 'run and carry' skills development and some 'feed' skills (hopefully to other forwards), so I considered that bench time for Petty may be an appropriate start. He'd probably get in the way amongst the tall timbers at this point - but player development strategies are always welcome with our bank of 2nd-tier players. I see him with hope in my mind that he could be developed to play in shorter bursts like some of the Whoreform flankers with height - no-one in mind in particular - but that additional height, marking plus mobility may take him to the next level whilst still concentrating on his intercepts and marking as a backline resource.

Yeah I like his marking and attack on the footy, and he does seem the athletic type that could really develop a great tank. He's an interesting proposition. Not 100% sure how we go with 'bench time' though given our known struggles with fitness and lack of preseason.

I think Lewis has been playing a different role at Casey. Against Collingwood he was on ball and I suspect that was also the case against Coburg. In that role he is not as accountable for defending as he would need to be if he replaced Wagner. I'm not so sure Lewis's good Casey form as an onballer at Casey would be replicated if he found himself on the half back line in the seniors.ย

Yeah true, did sound like he played in the middle a bit on the weekend again. Good point.

I wonder if he could potentially play more forward of the ball where his delivery would have more impact where needed?

From the previous link:

"For the second game in a row, Jordan Lewis displayed the elite skills which have made him one of best footballers of his generation.

Controlling the match from a muddy centre of Piranha Park, Lewis was immense for the Demons providing outstanding leadership, directing his younger teammates, calling out defensive coverages and setting up goals all leading to the victory."

He played 81% game time.ย  While its a bit less than our tall backman usually do (~90%) he had strapping on his leg and is still new to the pace of AFL so would say bench time was to not overload him.ย

When Hogan went down we had a spare tall defender really so Iโ€™m surprised he was even on for that long. But it shows just how important rotations are, we could have had better match ups with the 6 more mobile defenders but rotations are vital.ย

With the Lions playing 3 talls heโ€™ll be needed for a decent chunk of the game.

Jones played in Lewisโ€™ sweeping half back role on the weekend and did it well.ย

If we put Lewis in for Wagner weโ€™ll either have to shift Salem or Jones to a more defensive role, or have Jones go back to the wing and Fritsch or Hunt back I think.ย

This reminds me of the last two years when Vince v Lewis was the debate once it looked like only one of them should be in the same backlineย at once.ย

Indeed.

But also the real issue has been the kick inside 50 to our forwards. Improve that and we will convert a lot more chances.ย

Draft or trade in some quality outside players who can hit a target.

In the meantime put fritter forward.ย

I agree with your interpretation of our scoring issues - NOT primarily a lack of fire power, but of delivery, AND a quick crumber who applies pressure and can kick reliably probably more of a need than another tall, especially as has been pointed out with Tom maybe finding form and confidence, plus Smith and Weed. ย That said of course were Tony Lockett #2 to suddenly appear I would grab him in the blink of an eye.

And #31 Fritsch is IMVHO a far better forward than a defender. ย Offers more than Hannanย at the momentย though long term maybe somehow fit them both in of run #31 as an outsideย wingman.

I haven't seen Petty in real time at the ground (or did he play QB - if he did I didn't notice him) - is he quick enough and smart enough to play a wing?

The more regular Casey watchers would know more than me, maybe @KC from Casey?

I'm only guessing from what I've seen at senior level, but my thoughts would be to liken him to TMac when he plays on a wing. Petty could potentially build up a really good tank and then be that kind of 'key wingman' role where he's a bit more like a marking target who can spread a bit, rather than quick and smart as such. But that's guessing on potential rather than a really educated view of his career to date.

Hibberd will come back inย Hard to leave Lewis out after a 40 touch BOG performance.

Not sure which 2i go out. Wagner is one probably, but if so a bit stiff. Not sure who the other would be

If Hibbo comes back in, what are the chances do you think of Lewis playing more forward? Not sure if replacing Hannan would work as Lewis would struggle on the wing, although maybe Lockhart could play a bit more there and Lewis more hf to utilize his kicking?

ย

Play Fritch on wing or half-forward to replace Hannan, he's a much better kick and can mark. Hibberd will go in defence.

Don't think Lewis can apply enough forward pressure to play HF and too slow for the wing.ย

HBย seems the obvious spot but as DS notes jones played that role and i agree did it well.

Not sure where that leaves Lewis but I too would like to him deliver the ball inside 50.ย

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.
