the nvidia shield is (currently) regarded as the rolls royce for streaming, includes 4k support and hdr. can get one for about $200

bought one  a few weeks ago but have not got it connected as yet.

They put out a new model last year (the one I purchased) so fingers crossed it's a good long term (3-4 year) investment

Yes it has wifi in the sense that it connects to your local wifi network to stream but it has no ability to connect to the web without the aid of another device such as a phone or PC

my understanding is that chromecast does stream directly from the internet but the phone/tablet/pc is just effectively the remote control to initiate and control the chromecast device

Kayo is what should have been happening years ago.

Still a flawed product... but...

I trialed it on my phone a couple of months back and it was okay, but casting on a phone with anything I've always found to be a problem. My NBN connection is FTTH 100Mbps.

Now, there is an app for my TV. I installed that, paid 25 bucks for the month. Tested it out and it was great. A couple of lag issues here an there, but over the eight hours I had it on for yesterday (Womens ODI, NBL, AFLW, NZ v Bangladesh and Richmond V Melbourne) much better than the terrible AFL live app (in drop outs and quality) so sharing the two devices on an account with a mate.

12.50 a month v Foxtel prices?

Easy choice.

Well I have now subscribed to Kayo and can report that it works well after watching a little of the JLT game between Essendon and Geelong.

I have installed the app on my nvidia shield.

Had the occasional buffering issue but I suspect that was caused by my VPN slowing down the internet speed.

Where I am located they are now offering cheap broadband plans (around A$30 per month) with 1Gbs speed so with a bit of luck that should take care of the buffering issue.

An enormous improvement over watching the low quality SD broadcast on the Australia Channel

H96 pro s912 stick...  near new.  >>>  This is my practice match.

This is my entry into streaming which I know zilch about... only just learning this week, what 4K means.

Just signed up for it yesterday, mine is through Telstra tv. Watched for a couple of hours last night, no problems.

Lots of people on Whirlpool complaining about buffering when trying to watch the Sky feed of the Australian GP on Kayo.

I suspect that this was Kayo's first big event so it will be interesting to see what happens with the AFL.

I assume that because they take the Channel 7 AFL feed when available that many subscribers will watch FTA direct so the number of subscribers taking the Kayo feed will be reduced.

For those who are interested Kayo have a voucher offering two months for $5. Here's a link to a voucher code site. Not sure if the code works but good luck.

I purchased a Sony oled TV last week and downloaded the Kayo app to the TV so everything available through the Sony handset.  Works well even here in the bush with very ordinary adsl internet. At $25 a month it does seem a bargain. But with no contract, I can always pull out if not satisfied in the future. Also notice all 2018 games available - nice!

Has any tried streaming Kayo through a chromecast? My Samsung doesnt have a native app and despite also owning a PS4 and Xbox it also isn't available on either of those! So ipad -> chromecast might be the best option....

This post was recently made on  the whirlpool forum. I am assuming it is quoting the Australian Newspaper Media section.

"According to reports in today’s The Australian Media section, AFL boss Gil McLachlan has privately told the code’s top club bosses that he had been approached by (as yet unnamed) global internet and streaming giants that were keen to fork out big bucks to secure the game’s rights....The likes of Amazon Prime and Facebook have spent billions to secure other sports rights around the globe and it’s assumed they’d be the two most likely to make a play"

It's long been suggested here on WP that Amazon – at least – would make a play. Besides having the money and the AWS infrastructure already in place, they could also easily offer to push the streaming into other countries.

Maybe Foxtel can have the satellite rights and Amazon the streaming rights. Murdoch loves the free market. We'll see how much he likes that one"

https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/2791211

Fascinating to say the least and it would be naive to assume that these mega streaming companies aren't at least looking at the AFL. Perhaps we are too small for them to worry.

The 4k picture on Foxtel was very, very good. What quality is the Kayo picture?

depends upon what is being broadcast. It does offer 4k but if for example it is the Channel7 AFL feed it may only be HD.

I don't want to pay for sports other than AFL, so Kayo is no good to me.  Anyone have an ideas on how to get AFL Live cast to a TV this year. They seem to have stomped on doing that more effectively than they did last year.

you can subscribe to watch AFL the international service and then get it via a VPN. A clumsy and not cheap result. Would only be marginally cheaper than Kayo.

You could change your phone plan to Telstra and then get it free but remember you will be limited to watching on your phone/PC/tablet and no casting to your TV.

The release of Kayo starts to make sense of why Foxtel was making such a noise about the Telstra product being cast to TV's last year.

BTW the Kayo sub is easily activated and terminated so easy to get just get it for the footy season. (All finals are FTA so you only need it for the home and away season.) Find a friend to split the cost with and you are only paying $12.50 a month.

kayo at $25 give you 2 users, so just go halves with a friend so it only costs you $12.50 per month for just the afl season (no lock in). that's not a bad deal.

Samsung struggle.

xbox yes

there is no way amazon would be looking at small fry like afl; if he's lucky, it'll be disney thru espn / espn+ / cbs (channel 10), but his best bet is that uncle rupert lives for another three years and he wants to pony up the cash again for nrl / afl / cricket, all of which are out of contract at the same time for the first time (and i'm not even counting super rugby and ffa deals, which will also be up for renewal at the start of 2023)

gilligan is dreaming and afl is just a skinny idiot waiting to be squished by the real business men

Did you switch from having an IQ3 box to IQ4?

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
