Pathetic comment. If this was my site i'd ban you immediately. It's not so i'll put you on ignore.

Yes the players had a lot do with it! 100% 34 tackles is effortless... And work rate non existent.

5 minutes in you could see the game plan was off... Completely out coached. The most disappointing aspect was you could clearly see we’re playing to some other BS game plan. We threw our Brand out the window! That’s what was disappointing! I’m interested to listen to the speeches at the B & F Monday night...

It would be good good to have Roaming Brian at the B & F too ask the hard questions! Haha... It would be a Pissa! ?

I just want to ask the coaching group what the F..k were they thinking?

We didn't execute our gameplan.  Coaches tried to mix it up when things started going badly.  Our gameplan is not to lose contested possession and not tackle.  That's what happened and who knows why.  Coaches tried everything, including throwing TMac back in the first quarter to stop the onslaught.

I want to know how 18 (22) players can all play so badly at the one time for a sustained period of time.

Big Max said in his article on sunday that the team was not ready for such intense pressure.

Why weren’t they? It was going to be there

where was the preparation at? What did the Coaches do?

the 2nd half is irrelevant. Meth Coke had achieved their goal

There are so many small things that can lead to a debacle like Saturday in hindsight.  I suspect Max had to fill some news and didn't know what to write.

Of course. I hope the Club goes right through it all with a fine tooth comb.

All those small answers need to be fully addressed.

tmac was thrown back when the game was all over, needed to move him earlier- the 3rd goal wouldve been optimal time for this, even throw gawn back mightve helped

That is a terrible indictment on preparation if true.

I know it is. I was shocked. I thought we had come further than that.

A Preliminary Final is all out war, the way Meth Coke attacked the game was no suprise to me.

We the members must now wait....

I'm sure they will.  Tired, over-confident, complacent, happy with year, who knows.  All I know is they haven't lost contested ball all year, were smashed at it, and unlike Hawthorn the week before WC made them pay big time.

The loss to me was pretty much the story of our year, play a ripping block of games for 4-6 weeks then put up an absolute stinker, just a shame that stinker was a preliminary final but rather that then do it in a grand final, we will be fine just need more consistency and experience

Ouch.

From experience of reading footy media, giving fans this line is like waving a red flag to a bull.

It may have been true and there may have been little we could have done to get ready with the experience we had but no-one ever wants to hear that a side couldn't get ready for one of the biggest matches of their life. Hopefully we'll be better equipped to handle it in future.

I would have thought that they would have prepared properly before .... not have to discover they hadn't after !!

I find these sorts of comments really frustrating, as I'm fairly certain there is no response that would change your conviction, nonetheless here goes...

Let's assume that they did prepare 'properly' as they did for the previous two finals.

Does preparing properly mean that a whole range of things that occurred (missed handballs, slipping over, poor tackles/pressure etc etc), doesn't occur?

Also, what does preparing properly look like to you @beelzebub in your day to day? Have you ever prepared properly, but because of someone else (or a range of someone elses) things didn't go the way you expected.

Sometimes [censored] happens, and its got SFA to do with the preparation, it all to do with the execution under pressure.

And sometimes (actually every time) exposure to an uncomfortable experience reduces the stress for the next time...

It's to be expected to some degree that this happened as the players are a young young team, with no knowledge of playing finals...and probably had spent most of their petrol tickets over the previous 5 games....

I vehemently disagree with the 'preparation' problem...its too myopic.

In your opinion, leaning is only observed if performance occurs at a linear rate does it? So next year a minimum of 18 wins is a pass?

Why not?

set high standards

What’s your pass mark for 2019 seeing as you bought it up?

Agree.

Also, note these figures:

Experience differential
Games: West Coast Eagles (2635) v Melbourne (2070)
Goals: West Coast Eagles (2268) v Melbourne (963)
Average age: West Coast Eagles (26 years, 100 days) v Melbourne (24 years, 311 days)

Oh please... not the tired and young story again.

We were in  a prelim. It was there for the taking and we fluffed it.

Hopefully next year is better but admit it.... Saturday was the worst performance of the MFC for 2018.

Totally admit it... no issues there @Diamond_Jim - it's not just about preparation though, that's far too reductionist.

Shall agree to disagree :)

What’s your pass mark for 2019 seeing as you bought it up?

Because it is not the reality of elite sport...that's why not. Because MFC don't operate in a vacuum, other teams improve for a variety of reasons, from technical, to tactical, to age, to experience, to what staff the bring on, to what players they bring, to the vagaries of umpiring, to how many times to effing play at kardinia park... etc etc

Top 4 is a pass mark. But i'd like to distinguish between expectations vs hope.

For all the reasons listed before, I'd hope we'd get top 4 - and I'd expect we comfortably make the 8, considering learning for the year and the demographic of our club.

If we don't - it's not because 'we haven't learned', or thoroughly gone through things forensically', I see that as too simplistic.

Setting a goal is not setting a standard, that's setting an expectation...it's fairly nuanced I get it... standards (in 2018's language) is about behaviours time and time and time again... set them high for sure..make people accountable for sure (see Watts, Garlett, etc etc) with an understanding that athletes are humans, and [censored] up as well...

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?
Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG. Unfortunately, performances like these went against the grain of what Melbourne has been producing from virtually midway through 2024 and extending right through to the present day. This is a game between two clubs who have faltered over the past couple of years because their disposal efficiency is appalling. Neither of them can hit the side of a barn door but history tells us that every once in a while such teams have their lucky days or come up against an opponent in even worse shape and hence, one of them will come up trumps in this match.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
