Yes it looked that way - left the ground half way through Q3 for scans

Made the trip out to Box Hill and stood on the hill behind the Casey bench for much of the second half (when it wasn't blizzarding).

Bugg and Garlett both obviously didn't really want to be there (and I can't really blame them given the conditions), but Bugg's attitude especially when being rotated left a lot to be desired - angry at himself, bench staff and medicos. 

I get that you can't control the conditions, but you can control your attitude and demeanour 

Seriously all this rap about depth.. there’s not one herein who could be an afl player.. perhaps Petty in two years the rest are out... which goes to say even if we make the finals we are numbers 27-44 very ordinary footballers... 2020 might be our time..

We are missing a number of players through injury that rob Casey of some quality straight away.  It was also a terrible game for the club.  It takes a big list to hold a firsts and a seconds together for a full season.  If you dont read too much into today, then we have a few ‘developers’, a few ’plodders’ and a few undecideds on our list.  No one today really put their hand up for promotion, and a few put their hands up for getting their card stamped.  

Depth is a big issue, particularly in midfield, outside run and rucks.  I think we have a few good backmen, and DJ looks to be OK as the Nev Jetta apprentice.  There are some definite items on the shopping list for the trade and draft period.

There was a touch of inevitability about the way the Casey Demons’ winning streak was snapped at Box Hill City Oval on Saturday. 

They went into the game with top spot on the VFL ladder secured if they could win one of their two remaining games but with a line up barely resembling the combination that got them into that position in the first place. 

With the injuries at Melbourne mounting and the need to take two emergencies out west, the cupboard of AFL players available to play for Casey suddenly became almost bare and only ten of them turned up for the game played for the most part in blustery conditions and driving rain. For the Demons, that equation spelled doom and gloom and put paid to their chances of making it to a club VFL record 13 wins in a row.

When the going was bad weather-wise, the Demons kept pace in the hard grind when scoring was tough and the game remained an arm wrestle for most of the opening half. The Hawks managed to slip away to a 13 point lead at the main break and when the weather cleared after half time, they drove home the advantage booting seven goals to three to take a 37-point lead at three quarter time. The final margin was a 45-point car crash despite Casey having a narrow advantage for the game going inside the 50 metre arc.

The essence of winning games in such inclement conditions involves playing hard football, keeping your feet, putting your body on the line and tackling ferociously. With a few exceptions, that element was lacking with the Demons and the rump of their AFL was heavily exposed. Tom Bugg and Josh Wagner were the stand outs as far a Melbourne-listed players were concerned while young defender Harry Petty tried hard to stem the tide. Most of the remainder will struggle to hold their places based on this outing.

The better players for Casey were again their VFL listers headed by Mitch Gent, Jay Lockhart and Corey Wagner while first gamer Tom Freeman showed up many of his more experienced teammates with an impressive debut. 

The club’s ruck issues this year have been well-documented and these were compounded with the absence of Sam Weideman and Cam Pedersen to give the inexperienced Demon ruckmen a chop out. As it was, the Hawks no name big men won handsomely in the ruck contests leaving coach Jade Rawlings with a massive headache on the eve of the finals because they were almost completely bereft of the necessary big body strength to win games in tough conditions.

The Casey Demons play Williamstown at Casey Fields in next week’s final round and will be hoping for a win to ensure themselves of a home final. Otherwise, they want the Hawks to repeat their winning form at Box Hill City Oval against the third-placed Cats on Saturday.

Those stats make for horrendous reading, although Corey Wagner yet again seemed to rise above. Must be a serious shot for a spot on the list next season.

He's an interesting one McKenna. Want to see him retained for another year to have a proper shot at a pre-season and see what he can do. Having said that, he'll need to show a bit more over the next month, otherwise I doubt he'll be given the opportunity.

Typical over emotive Demonland reaction to a loss

Casey listed players who are part time have been up for 12 weeks, bound to dip at some point

Melbourne listed players are at Casey for a reason, either developing,  not in form or returning from long term injury

Corey Wagner is playing for his future, still don't understand why Norths delisted him, too good at VFL level

Beaten on the day by a better team

Some people forget that there really is no such thing as the Casey team as one usually thinks of it.

There are three groups.... The AFL listed players.... The regular Casey listed players... the fringe Casey players.

Rarely do these three groups train together, they do completely different pre seasons and of course groups 2 and 3 have fulltime jobs or education commitments.

As the AFL player numbers decrease the more one gets from group 3. It was a wonderful credit to Freeman ( a group 3 player) to be named amongst the best.

He's a spud.. never rated him even when we picked him up from gws.

A woeful spectacle on the tube yesterday, but I have been very impressed with the progression of Jay Lockhart, he's taken a punt to leave Tassie and chase his dream, started the year alternating between back pocket/half back flank and now his eye catching dash and composure from the back half has rewarded him with runs through the middle of the ground, and he just keeps rising to the challenge. He's poise, good balance and footy IQ say to me that he's a certainty to be either drafted or rookied next year. 

Wagner of the Corey variety is also a good chance to be picked up, although I do wonder if he's one that may struggle with the gulf in class between VFL and AFL as the likes of Bugg, Matt Jones, etc have done and will continue to do.

With so many players done for the year with injuries/retirement it's yet again going to be a big ask for Casey in the finals, the return of Pederson and Weideman will be vital for our structure. I think we've got an imbalance in the key position department as we have Hutchins, Keilty, Petty and White, but only Tim Smith as a key forward. Our inexperienced rucks have a long way to go too as has been patently obvious all year.

Not critical of Declan, Mo. In fact, he’s probably been among Casey’s best 3 or 4 players over the past month or so but the conditions weren’t great for him on Saturday. He contested well against Box Hill but while the stats don’t always paint the full picture (he did a lot of nullifying work), I didn’t think this was his best game. That said, I think he deserves another year on his contract and with another preseason under his belt, he should break through for that elusive first game.
