"We see a great opportunity to bring the Essendon and Carlton rivalry back to life on the big stage and create a standalone event in a time slot that is not currently being utilised," Essendon CEO Xavier Campbell said.

"The Good Friday Eve timeslot is the night before a public holiday, it is supported by both clubs and the MCC and we are very confident we could build it into an iconic match."

So that would give Essendon 3 so called blockbusters ... Anzac day, Dreamtime and this one.

Frankly I am getting a little tired of the continuously compromised draw

We should pitch for Round 1 Eve.

Surely we can blockbuster that one.

Richmond v Carlton is now the traditional opening match of the season... yet another compromise and of course such an eagerly awaited game.

'Blockbuster' seems to now just be the socially acceptable way of saying 'we want to guarantee as many games as possible against teams in the same state while also trying to give our fixture-f-ing desires priority status so other teams have to cop the 6-day turnaround'.

If Carlton aren't careful and lift themselves off the canvas in the next decade, I reckon they'll fold in 15-20 years. They have lost a lot of fans and I'd argue have probably compromised losing a generation of supporters.

It's not a long tradition and I truly hope the AFL shelve it next year.

It's such a let down to the start of a season and should probably be the GF replay game.

I've heard that suggested. Makes a lot of sense. Forget what reasons are given against it.

Seriously, I think one of the block busters - should be reserved for the “two highest finishing Victorian clubs - the year before”.

Maybe R1

Believe it or not Carlton played someone (forget who) on 31/12/1999.

The prelude to the new millennium. Not many turned up but IIRC it was Fev's first real outing.

Just goes to show that the AFL will try anything ?

Not so sure about the folding part. AFL are more likely to go into relocation mode when the next series of clubs falling over comes around. (That's how Tassie will finally get their team.)

But the thing that dismays CFC supporters more than anything seems to be that their kids don't like CFC and either don't want to follow AFL, or want to support other clubs. As we know, when that kicks in, it's a long long way back.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
