Yeah I reckon we got far better run with the umps in the Adelaide win than the Port loss.

Still can't get over the "75 metre" penalty paid to Westhoff which iced the game.

The differential is not the only interesting figure. How come the Bulldogs have had 11 home games whereas ten other teams, including us have had 9? And I assume this data includes nominal home games, irrespective of where they are played. Would that be right?

It is so frustrating that the umpires  can find so many more free kicks to interstate teams such as West Coast + 79 differential. More so them as they have been consistently given more free kicks  at home.  They call the umpires professionals and they don't get it right most of the time. How do the umpires get sucked in by there fans. They are so biased West coast fans DITTO. We need 3 Victorian umpires for the away game against the Eagles. It might just even out the free kicks. 

Yes the free kick count plays a part and can have an influence in games with tiggy touch frees in front of goals and so on. We  lost a game there not so long ago. 2016 by 6pts.   Yes l am  whinging. I am sick of the  WCE.

Dont think there would be a single person who wouldnt have been able to pick the top 3.

Proves that the umpires are often heavily influenced by the size and craziness of the crowds. Outliers being Richmond and Essedon.

 

God damn it would be hard being an opposition supporter in Perf. It's a different planet over there.

I think it's simplistic to say that the reason WCE and Adelaide get so many frees for is solely due to their home ground advantage. If it were simply that, why is Fremantle so far down the list? I suspect something else is at play, possibly, but not necessarily being helped by home crowd support. Perhaps WCE and Adelaide play a game style that encourages free kicks (do their players "duck into tackles" more than other teams' players, for example) and the crowd noise amplifies the incident. Away clubs need to work out what the true drivers are and not just assume it's purely home ground bias.

Tigers is a surprise, most teams that are near the top are generally there because of hostile crowd noises. The tiger army is as hostile as you can get.

Tigers entire gameplan revolves around scragging off the ball. Evidently you give away a lot of free kicks but you also get to manhandle your opponent constantly so it still works out in your favour. Tigers should get way more frees payed against them than they do.

True and they also did get an armchair ride against us in the 3rd quarter vs us. At least 4 clear HTB decisions (two against Dusty) that were not paid that cost us goals and momentum.

The AFL and the umpiring Department should (but won’t) look into the consistent and ongoing disparity of home ground frees to WCE and to Adelaide.

An analysis of which umpires give more to WCE in particular should be possible as there has to be a distribution.

Find which umpires are too scared to call it as it is then those umpires should not umpire games there.

Coincidently opened up to a page today - from The New Psychology of Leadership (great read) - which was recommended from an AFLPA lead workshop recently.

At the Uni of SA (Mohr, Larson, 1998) - analysed umpiring decisions over 170 AFL matches that were played between teams from different states over a 4 year period. Needless to say, the umpires who adjudicate games are supposed to do so from a position of impartiality and fairness, their very purpose is to ensure fair play. Yet - when home state of umpires was taken into consideration, the awarding of frees were distinctly unfair. 

It reliably favours the team from the umpires home state. Moreover, this pattern of in group favouritism as particularly pronounced when the match was being played in the umpires home state.

that information (thus data has been gathered) has been sitting around in a scientific journal for at a minimum 20 years...

could really be used to inform versions of integrity and governance in umpire placement (a la, international cricket) (not because there is deliberate deception), but because umpires are human (insert gag here) and respond to deep seated psychological factors, like the players do too.
