Jeez, I thought Swallow was a lot older than 25. If his body is right, he'd be a handy pick up for Freo, especially for a 2nd rounder

Same Moonie, thought he was 28ishย

Well just for them I heard Dusty, Lynch, McGovern, Cripps and Curnow have signed with us for next year.

Is there such a place as the wing these days. It seems to me that there is only the player with the ball surrounded by a moving phalanx of 35 players

There is a place for a winger sittingย about 5 to 10 metres off the contest awaiting a release handball or shutting down a similarly loiteringย opponent.

I know we prefer to release to a player about 1 metre away who is about to be tackled butย  I reckon above might be way to go.

West Coast can offer Gaff moreย ,but may not do so if we can offer them someone of value like a Kent plus someone else.

Regarding a backup ruckman, seems the Weed is be tried in the 2nds.Based on that no need for 2M Peter. King and Flipo may become the 3rd ruckman and therefore will be required to play elsewhere. Bradtke will become a project ruckman for the future.

We need another mid, forward and defender.ย

What about targeting Matthew Scarlett. Defence coach at geelong and would be a wealth of knowledge for our young backs. Or maybe Adam Yze, learning under clarkson and i remember him working from a specialist goal kicking coach to being the backline coach around 2016 and always thought he might return home.

Does anyone realistically think Angus brayshaw will leave? I personally just think heโ€™s trying to get a few extra $$ but if he decided to go whatโ€™s he worth?ย

I would be trying to give weeds some experience in the backline at Casey.

If he develops he could play at both ends next year in the seniors

We need another Rance type at Full back!

ย

Who else do we realistically target at season end? Someone with a f*cking heart!

Yup.

We need a gun key KPD more so than a running mid, both of course would be nice.

Weitering could be worth a crack even though he's under contract.ย

Lever will be of most value when playing that true third intercept defender. Oscar and Weitering to mark talls with Lever as intercept.ย

Two key backs and Lever as the intercept specialist.ย

Good call on Weitering, confidence has taken a hit this year but still think he can play.

Change of scenery may do him some good. Tyson would help Cripps out greatly but another sweetener also needed to get it done

Rumours are Stephen May is gettable. He would be my number 1 priority.

We need someone to mind gorilla forwards, and while OMac has improved, if he is playing on the likes of Hawkins, we are no chance.

two things:

1. surely carlton wouldn't get rid of weitering.. they know what they have. however, he was a dees supporter growing up (crazy bastard) * probably a basketballer too ?ย say we got him, wouldn't he be too similar to lever? i think that maybe with those two and hibberd, things might get messy? not sure though, i don't watch carlton play

2. there's no way may would come down to us. he's from darwin isn't he? his family would be all up north. goldy weather would be somewhat similar. why on earth would he move to cold and wet melbourne?! i reckon he'll stay as sole captain until the AFL finally packs that club in.

Darcy Moore is linked with Sydney but I can see Melbourne having a crack! He might follow in the same steps as his old man. Pies to Dees!

He can play back and forward. Only concern for me is he has had a lot of hammy issues for a big man. Genuine swing man if needed to play that role. Best football is front of him and has age on his side... I believe we would lose Weideman to get him.

Gaff obviously one I donโ€™t need tooย mention and Moore would be great gets!ย

We have interest in Ed Langdon and Polec.

And I wouldnโ€™t rule out us chasing Billingโ€™s!ย

Jaydn Hunt being out form and injured ? doesnโ€™t help. He needs be in our best 22. He will be like a new recruit when he is back.

VDB and Kent our in our best 22 and will be in the side very very soon... Iโ€™m thinking VDB plays next week v Adelaide.

This ^

AND....

1.ย  A classy outside winger with speed who can finish off his line breaking running hitting targets and at goal from around 50 (a la Fritschkrieg but with a little more power on the burst out of congestion) in the vein of Burgoyne (yes i know he is a rare find....something similar somwhere!??).ย  I have no idea whether that's Gaff.ย  Maybe.ย  He scrubs up pretty well in the stat comparisons.ย  My one worry though is his kicking efficiency which is a fair way from elite i think.ย  Burgoyne obviously at the top end sitting at 71.7% (i think the AFL average is around 65% - 68% (or thereabouts) vs Gaff @ 64.5% (both stats are career averages)...

http://www.afl.com.au/stats/stats-pro#/Compare?playerIds=CD_I210012,CD_I290801&comparisonTab=h2h

2.ย  A gun medium power forward who can play a little time through the mid field also if needed.ย  Who can take the opposition apart in the air and on the ground (Gary Ablettย  Snr / Danger style).ย  Someone who can take a match by the scruff of the neck and turn it on it's head inย  a 10 minute burst.ย  Someone slightly lessor would do also along the lines of a Daniel Bradshaw.ย  A clutch mark and goal kicker in crucial moments from distance and just from whatever angle etc....

Trade all NQRs at the end of this year for the 3 keyย  players above and we start winning silver.

There are at least 9 on the present list IMHO that we can trade / delist and 2 who are possibly going to retire anyway in Vince & Pedders.ย  A total of 11.

Apparently Goody has said he is at least 2 or 3 weeks away.ย  Really need him and Kenty back in ASAP to replace JKH & Tyson.

Would love to get May.ย  Hes a real general down back, much like Lever.

They would be a brilliant combo.

I think we mainly need to target polished composed players. Just explosive pacey player wonโ€™t quite cut it.

Perhaps another small to medium sized forward capable of becoming a handful for opposition sides..... will see?

Good call. But we do need more speed and ground level threat at the feet of Hogan, McDonald and even Melksham. Jeffy is one. Spargo is another but isn't quick. Petracca is more explosive than quick too.

We need at least one more small, maybe even two. I suspect Kent will be kept on the list for this reason. Unless, Taylor and co think there are some speedy goal sneaks in the mould of the last few Rioli's up for grabs at the end of this season.

Recruit a spcialist running coach to teach our players to run both ways and increase stamina. That would solve a lot of our problems.

Wallis covers a lot of ground, BUT does he dispose of the ball really well. Trade Dom Tyson and JKH for him.

Plus a straight swap forDangerfield for Oliver ( Sorry , 2nd bottle of red kicking in).

If we canโ€™t get Gaff, Iโ€™m all for Hannerbery on the proviso his injury situation can be resolved??

other player I reckon we should keep a close eye on:

Fasolo( another pending injury situation)

Dalhaus

Sam Wright

Dayne Beams( you just never know)

anymore FA please inform?

  • GAMEDAY: Essendon

Itโ€™s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the ย Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measlyย 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?ย  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where theyโ€™ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sundayโ€™s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullartonโ€™s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Caseyโ€™s three matches and, with Melbourneโ€™s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next weekโ€™s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forwardโ€™s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasnโ€™t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the teamโ€™s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourneโ€™s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season.ย There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight.ย Since that game, the Demonsโ€™ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
