Training - Wednesday 11th July, 2018

Featured Replies

The drills were quick and simple. They appeared a little fumbly at first but later improved. Hopefully that's all the hangover from Darwin we have. The morning was cold and the wind was light at the start and a little stronger by the end. The conditions were reasonable for good skills. Nathan Jones vocal, placing high expectations on his troops.

Group bonding appeared to be emphasized for a bit of the time.

Bailey Fritsch and Oskar Baker in with the mids. Forwards had Dean Kent with them. Backs had Cam Pederson and Aaron vandenBerg. The split into these groupings only lasted for a short time. Then it was into two groups, The talls who practiced marking and the rest.

Game simulations were short, with no tackling. Mainly focused on lateral ball movement then finding a corridor. Oscar McDonald and Harry Petty working on Tom Mcdonald and Jesse Hogan.

In the rehab group was Jayden Hunt, Joel Smith, Dean Keilty and Dion Johnstone.  Jayden was running hard by the end. Dion only doing easy laps. Joel eventually joined the main group so must have made it through the tests.

Harley Balic and Billy Stretch were not on the track.

Pat Mckenna appeared to have some right hamstring tightness and left early.

Goodwin had some focus on Christian Petracca during individual goal kicking.

The running group at the end of training included; Cam Pederson, Mitch King, Lachlan Filopovic, Tom Bugg, Jay Kennedy-Harris, Mitch Hannan, Dom Tyson, Sam Weideman, Oscar Baker, Josh Wagner and Tim smith. Cam working very hard leading most of the runs. Jay running home well on the last lap with Dom second behind him when it became competitive. Oskar most of the time tailing the group.

PS. I think I saw Brendan in the rotunda of the botanical gardens with his binoculars watching Collingwood train.
(not serious).

Just a few more notes.

I dont think Mitch King will be on the list next year.. at the end, Weideman and Fillapovic were down one end and King down the other. They would kick the ball at each other for them to try and mark it at it's highest point.. unfortunately King was just dropping them and even Fillopovic was yelling out to him to try and stick his arm up higher. Not basing it on that, but he's just someone that can't to seem to get the basic fundamentals right.

Fillapovic on the other hand is an interesting one.. I see something in him and wouldnt be surprised if hes kept on the list again for another year. Big thick set of legs and starting to add some size on his upper body will help also. He's also not a bad kick of the footy, in fact he's alot better then King.

Reminds alot of when Stefan Martin started out for us as that raw and gangly project player.

My understanding is that Stretch is injured for at least 4 weeks unfortunately.  Desperately unlucky for a bloke who works really hard and just played one of his best games for the club.

What is he injured with?

Where did you hear that?  His outside run was a breath of fresh air vs Freo, damn.

MIA was Satman today...

... probably up all night watching his side, in that world thingy.

Or maybe he's over there giving free tactical IT, to his Brits side? spying on opponents.

I was beside a tree looking quite dodgy, so i dont think anyone was game to shout me a coffee!

Also good to see Anthony McDonald down there watching on with Todd Viney.

careful, that may not have been a tree you were looking dodgy against,  'dd36'.

Has anyone see Bbo since the Darwin game.

He does sometimes like to go, 'incognito'...   any doggies sniffing about 'dd36' ?

Btw no Billy Stretch here.

I was at the kids clinic with my sons on Monday morning and my son was doing a kicking and marking drill with Billy and at one point he looked to grab for his quad.

For the next 5 mins he looked to be uncomfortable and kept stretching it.

Could have been just tightness, may be unrelated, but I thought at the time I hope he hasn’t done any damage.

Your sons lack of ability to hit a target 10 metres away has caused Billy to tear his quad of the bone.

That sounds better than the ACL injury I heard!

Interesting given Clarry was rested at Full Forward a couple of times in Darwin.

I like Clarry resting forward.

Resting? How about being busy kicking a few sausage rolls?! ;)

Btw, thanks for the reports Dazzle and Kev. Much appreciated

Huge bummer if true. For him and the side. We need the Hunt of last season back.

Oh, come on! Poor bloke can’t take a trick, hopefully it’s minor. It’s happening too often for the kid. Fingers crossed.

Cheers for the training report Dazzle

Hoges looking fit and ready to go! I reckon he is due for a bag this weekend! Just looks so confident.

Tommy Mac was having shots for goal and kept missing them.. along woth Fritsch also who was not hitting right in the middle. Hopefully just blowing a few cobwebs out before the weekend.

Terrific reports cheers Dazzle and Kev! To allay concerns about untidy skills and missing practice shots at goal post-Darwin, these were occurring during training last Friday 6th July. During the game a number of the goal kicks sailed through either side of goal posts at one metre or less from being 6 pointers. Whilst the game as a spectacle was a little underwhelming. On reflection the team performance in other phases of the game was cause for optimism. As the competition for finals places ’heats up’ in the later rounds of this season. Territory proud on both Demons’ performances here!?

According to Ben Guthrie on Twitter Stretch will miss the remainder of the year with a stress fracture in his toe.

Time to see what JKH has to offer.

If they bring in Vince I'll cringe.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
