Hard to imagine that anything could top the selection of Maynard in round one and Tim Smith last week ,but the choice of Harrison Petty is simply staggering.

The boy has shown some promise at Casey but not outstanding. Added to that he is a skinny, underdeveloped 18 year old. I actually feel sorry for him and hope he develops into a fine player.

Both Frost and Keilty have been impassablee videnced again yesterday against the Bombers. Why these two have been ovelooked is perplexing particularly in the case of Frost. Yes, neither are champions, but a long way ahead of Petty atm. Frost adds a dynamic of pace sadly lacking.

Many reasons we lost close encounters against the Cats, Power and Saints but when it's so tight one player can make the difference. I do not look forward to any Thursday selection night.

Spot on. Two staggering selections and two games arguably lost at the selection table...

Petty reminded me of Jack Watts selection

Clearly not ready for the game and easily pushed aside

The kid has real promise but needs more time in the gym and body positioning

omcd also looked lost again and is slipping backwards quickly after showing positive signs

Spot on Martin.  Selection has been and continues to be ONE of this Football Dept's greatest knock.

I wrote in an earlier Post that I believe poor Selection has cost us 3 games this year.

Geelong - Maynard & Wagner

Port - Tyson & T Smith

Saints - Petty & Tyson.

I would like to think that things would improve at the selection table but have lost all confidence. Would love to know what Goodwin said to Frost  as to the reasons Petty was selected ahead of him. Also, rretty sure Simon can't look Stretch in the face and continue to tell him he's missed out and strings outstanding games at Casey. Hope one the Adelaide teams pick him up and he becomes an established senior player. No star yet but he has more pace than most in our team and has never really been given a decent crack.

Mitch Hannan getting selected 5 weeks in a row after inept performances is puzzling

Petracca very lucky

Hannan's selection and position this week was the most puzzling and showed in the game. Flying in packs,  etc. 2 disposals to 1/2 time.

Both will be at Casey next week or the club is not serious.

My impeccable sources tell my Tyson has had no conversations or feedback from the FD as to a) why dropped,  and b) why re-selected.

Either way, something smells and this approach could apply to others also.

I was dismayed to see him lining up on the wing today. Have they learnt nothing!

If true, this lack of communication is disheartening

Totally believe it as it would be easier for Goodwin and co. to avoid situations they could not possibly explain i.e Frost,Stretch.

I've decided I must be stupid and know nothing about footy coz I can't work out wtf is happening with selection since Goodwin took over either...No Gartlett or any real crumbjng forward....side was too tall and slow today, had a bad feeling walking in...

Are we expecting any more Gems from Craig Jennings this week about our evolving backline?

Shut your trap untill we the pre season. Some really dumb things coming out of the MFC lately.

Where were all you “clearly not ready” geniuses on Thursday?

He had a horrible game, no doubt about that. He had his confidence crushed when he got outmarked in the first contest with Battle - that just lead to a death spiral of mistakes. That miskick was the sort of error that AFL players only make when they’ve been broken.

I highly doubt that’s the sort of form he showed in the VFL though. He had his confidence shot in that first contest. It could have just as easily gone the other way.

Today was the WELCOME game right? Who in there right mind would come back to support this club after this Deebarcle. I suppose another loss when the crowd was over 40k.

1 Petty was not ready... but he is far from skinny

2 Many have been calling for Bernie's head for some time. He was missed today and he is far from finished! Congratulations to him for going back to Casey and playing very well. He has a strong competitive character... something sorely missed today.

3 Petracca lifted, not to match-winning levels, but he gave it everything

4 Hogan lifted (see 3) his 3 goals were a big improvement from his past few games

5 Stretch must come in next week... Petty, Hannon, Tyson on shaky ground

Looking at the Casey stats v Bombers... Frost & Kielty not bashing the door down from that perspective. Do we take a risk with Baker after seeing what they did to Petty?

This is extremely poor and this used to happen often in the Neeld Tenure!

Not right at all!!

But Nasher, as you know VFL form on tiny grounds slower play .. some players look good! Unfortunately he is a long way from it lacks pace and a poor left foot looked like under 12 stuff!

These professionals in the FD ARE PAID BIG BUCKS TO GET IT RIGHT!

There's the selections for the game and then also selections for roles within the game. This is my take on our side at the moment and where we struggled today:

1) Jack Viney is a midfield weapon, not a tagger! When did Goodwin get the idea that our number 1 mid (still most influential when up and going) should be doing a negating role? It beggars belief and we are shooting ourselves in the footy even before the ball is bounced! If we want to play a hard tag every week why not bring Bugg in for that role? He's got a big tank and loves niggle. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

2) There is no point playing guys who are 'in form' out of position, as they will just find themselves out of form. Dom Tyson is not a wingman, he's an inside mid. If there is no room for him in the engine room then he must bide his time at Casey. We were wayyyyyy to slow on transition today and he is not up to it in that position.

3) We that the most successful side in the compeition at the moment has a lot of small forwards. So what do we do? Play pretty much no small forwards. Garlett and Spargo should both be in, yes I know Garlett isn't tearing it up at Casey, but he's a proven quantity and at least has some speed.

4) This is not a knock on Harry Petty as I am sure he will turn into a fine player for us, but Frost has to play starting next week.

5) Goodwin how about we work on getting our 'press' to a reliable level. Our defence is so bad at the moment I would actually laugh if it wasn't so dire.

Glad to get that all off my chest.

We have fundamental problems with game plan and effort.  Until this is sorted, bring in players won’t change a thing.  Defensive effort is appalling which makes me wonder how fair dinkum this group are.  They have achieved naff all yet!! Maybe they think they have which is a huge problem.  Welcome game just made us all feel very unwelcome.  Soon nobody will bother going to the G.  They fail there too much.

Sorry but we are supporters. It is not our bloody job to determine if a kid is ready to play seniors.

He has hardly been knocking the door down, and we all know KPPs take a long time to come of age. Why on earth you would throw him to the wolves (something we have gotten much better at not doing!) with our season on the line and with other more mature viable options available, is mind boggling.

Smacks of arrogance and stubbornness. Already our back line is so inexperienced. So you drop Vince and bring in a first gamer. I mean wtf?

You can’t blame a first gamer for costing us a game, but gees it was hard to watch. I felt for him and I’m sorry that we ruined what should have been a magical day for him, by playing him too soon without any backup. Pathetic decision making from the coaches.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
