For the punters out there, we are currently $5.50 to miss the 8 on Sportsbet.  Im expecting us to win this weekend coming, so our odds of missing the 8 should blow out a bit more.

What price are you willing to pay to watch the Dees in the finals?  Me, I'll be putting $100 on us to miss the 8 after this weekend's win.  Should get $8s, so if the worst case scenario eventuates, I'm ending the year with a few dollars in my pocket.

That said, I'll never be happier with losing $100 if we make finals.

    I am hoping my 10$ on Gawny to win the brownlow at $81 gets up!

    Paul Hasleby was on SEN a short time ago and stated a story was breaking over in the West about J Kennedy possibly missing the next 3-4 weeks for the Eagles.

    Massive if true. His absence makes them a truly ordinary team and was a major reason why we won last year.

    Huge loss if accurate. Hasleby went on to say how players like Waterman and Rioli struggle without Kennedy, a forward general so to speak and the fact he’s good for 3-4 goals a game.

    Not sure SWYL, didn’t give details. I read earlier Kennedy has definitely been ruled out of the Derby and details about his injury and possible return date still to come.

    Have done the old ladder predictor (i know I know) and I went with what I consider the favourites for each game.  Have us winning GC and Swans and losing to WC.  before round 23 we are in the 8, see below with no chance of getting kicked out unless Hawks make up 7% in one round.  if you change it around to us losing to swans, we will be overtaken by the Hawks or Essendon if they win and we lose to GWS with GWS playing for the top 4.  im not sure I can handle the next 4 weeks!!!!

    Team selection, strategic use of the bench, finding space well away from the communicable (convincible) umpires. That is the strength.

    I like it, but one of my dearest wishes also is for Collingwood to miss top 4.

    That all helps, but winning big games in front of huge crowds is mostly between the ears

    If Essendon (playing Hawks)  and the Kangaroos (playing Lions at the Gabba) lose this week, they are both done.  They would need to win their last 3 games and make up a lot of percentage, which wont happen.

    This would leave Sydney as the only team currently outside the 8 still with a chance of getting in.

    That would be ideal. You’re right, if ESS get done this week it’s unlikely they’ll beat Rich and Port both in the last two weeks. The bookies have the Lions favourites this week against North. 

    Do we want Sydney or Pies to win? A Sydney loss and us winning gives us a real chance for breathing space. On the other hand Top 4 is a real possibility with a Pies loss. 

    I know we can’t look too far ahead and all we need to do is keep winning but it can’t be helped.

    Looks like we are getting Sydney at the right time... WC likely to be without Kennedy & Nic Nat and for some reason we play better away than at home, and GW$ are a 20% worse team at the MCG. I really think we are a good chance for all 4.

    Who knows how much Lyon knows might be just guessing or blowing off wind! 

    But unless JV is fully fit and over the problem foot. I would put him away for this year. Too much up side for next year 

    he needs to start putting pressure on it very soon or give up on this year. 

    And we need to plan and cope with that possibility. Go Dees

    I know we can’t look too far ahead and all we need to do is keep winning but it can’t be helped. 

    Pies for me.

    On the balance of probability, we will win 2/4, 3/4 maybe, 4/4 unlikely. Without looking at the ladder predictor, we'd have to win 3 or 4 to crack top 4 (?).

    I think I'd prefer the Pies and others in top 4 to start taking games off those around us and most likely to push us down if (not when, but if) we fail.

    But as you say, if we just keep winning, it all becomes academic. Good insurance though.

    West Coast spearhead Josh Kennedy has revealed a knee to the shin from teammate Tom Cole as the reason he’ll miss this weekend’s derby - and possibly beyond.

    Kennedy didn’t fly to Hobart for the Eagles’ loss to North Melbourne due to the incident at training last week, with the forward all but ruling himself out of a return against Fremantle on Sunday.

    Speaking to 6PR this morning, Kennedy said the latest knock had left him sore following the hairline fracture at the top of the fibula on the same right leg that kept him out of action earlier in the season.

     
     

    “The previous knock I had... I just got another knock at training, which was not on the spot but around that area,” he said.

    “It’s pulled up a bit sore, and we kind of thought it would pull up a bit better from (last) Thursday to Saturday, but it didn’t.

    “To get another knock and not be able to run, turn, lead or participate in training was disappointing.”

    Kennedy outed the training culprit as Cole, who was yesterday crowned this week’s Rising Star nominee after an encouraging season in defence.

    “He’s given me a knee and he’s copped the award this week,” Kennedy said with a laugh.

    Cole addressed the incident at a press conference later in the morning.

    "It was a funny one," Cole said. "I didn't even know I did that until we looked at the vision after training. 

    “It was just one of those things during training - we have knocks. It's a physical game. It was just a contest where we hit each other. I shouted him a coffee during the week, so we're all good now. 

    “We're on good terms. It was a bit incidental. I didn't even know what happened.”

    Cole admitted he felt a little bad.

    "Yeah I do," he said. "He's a pretty important part of our team. But he forgave me pretty quick. Hopefully we get him back pretty soon."

    West Coast remain in second place following the Kangaroos loss, but face a fight to hold their all-important top-two spot over the last four weeks of the season.

    The Eagles travel to South Australia to take on fellow flag contenders Port Adelaide after this weekend’s derby, with Kennedy eyeing a return against the Power.

    “I’m hoping to - that’s the plan,” Kennedy said of a comeback against Port.

    “We’ve just got to make sure this settles and I can get through a bit of training this week.

    “If I can’t train this week, then it’s probably unlikely for next week.”

    Kennedy’s absence will be felt against the Dockers on Sunday, with the two-time Coleman Medallist having booted 19 goals in his past four derby outings.

    While top 4 would be awesome, I think it's just important to make the finals this year reagardless. We can worry about top 4 next year.

    And anyway, if we did sneak into top 4 we'd probably have to face Richmond which would be a bloody tough task first up.

    As much as I'd love Collingwood to miss top 4 it might be a necessary price to pay for us to make it :s

      Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

      Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
