I reckon we will get an extra home game at the G. I bet it was all sorted at that meeting at AFL HQ at seasons’ end, as part of the compo for giving GC Suns our number 2 pick.

I really hope you are correct!

I would MUCH rather play an extra game at Marvel than in Darwin.

For one we play well there. Secondly most of us can actually get there to see the game. And most importantly there is no travel fatigue factor.

No mention of how we are replacing the lost money!

Don't know anything, but given the recent meetings with the AFL and how much help the Suns are getting, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a financial incentive for us to pass things on to GC.

iirc we are contracted to play 9 Home games at the G.  We get 2 Away games at the G as compensation for the NT games.  I assume we will lose one of those G 'compensation' games.

In the mfc web article, Pert does not say we will get an extra10th game at the G.

I believe Vic clubs are required to play 1 or 2 Home games at Marvel Stadium.  PJ got us an exemption for 2019 due to the NT games.  (Can't recall if that happened in 2018).

A side benefit was Alice and Darwin were counted as interstate games so we usually had fewer other Away interstate games.

Hopefully the change means there is an extra game in Victoria but it could mean an extra interstate game.  Hopefully, it won't mean two trips to WA.

Will be interesting to see what the 'fine print' looks like.

Not only is this in the article:

“Supporters have made it very clear to the Club they would love to see the Darwin home game return to the MCG as soon as possible, so they can watch their team live and share in the excitement,” he told Melbourne Media.

“This is something we have been working on with the AFL for quite some time. However, it was important the timing coincided with the opportunity to return the game to our traditional home, the MCG, rather than other alternatives.”

But if you watch the video, Pert says (verbatim): "Great news for Melbourne supporters and members today, I can announce that the Melbourne Football Club will be bringing one of its Northern Territory home games back to the MCG"

How are we making up the lost revenue no mention that I can see?

Nothing like the power of positive thinking.

If we played the crows at the G this year we would have won. Imagine we were vying for top 8 and that lose cost us a spot in the finals.

How much is that worth???

Hearing from extremely reliable sources that the MFC is looking to get out of the Darwin part of the NT deal.

Club has no issue with the Alice component and was very happy with this year's 'Heart of the Nation' game.

But the humidity of the Darwin match and the flow-on effects the following week is considered too high a price to pay.

The AFL is apparently - finally - willing to schedule us for a bye after the Darwin match, but this would mean the Darwin game needs to be played earlier in the season (in these middle rounds), which ruins the whole concept of the Doug Nicholls / Heart of the Nation / Alice game, which both club and league are backing to the hilt.

MFC and AFL have already met on the issue, with more talks to come.

Well done PJ, well done Perty, and well done Grapeviney for breaking this story wide open when the rest of the footy media were asleep at the wheel.

Pretty embarrassing bump, though - I hate getting compliments and pats on the back, even when it's completely justified and deserved.

What! we could have played the crows anywhere they would still have won. We struggled to beat anyone anywhere last season. Did you notice the 17th finish?

Isn't that Richmond, Hawthorn and Collingwood's home ground?

You will never get anyone to convince me it is Richmond, Hawthorn and the filths home ground. It has always been ours and should always be so. The rest of them can get stuffed.

Have posted before the ditching of the Darwin game which I thoroughly support will almost certainly result in the loss of around 5k of   memberships that would have been sold to the NT govt as part of the contra deal for their sponsorship. So we get both a revenue loss and a nominal membership drop.

Pity about the abysmal 2019 on field performance. If we had made top 4 we would take it in our stride.

That may well be but those teams have been beating us up there for decades and in the case of Richmond for over half a century. We are the poor cousins at the G.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
