I was thinking about this today. The question is, can lever play small? Because if so, Oscar and Petty take the talls (most teams still play 2, and Petty is 197cm), and lever goes back to that third tall/intercept role he had at Adelaide but can play tall if required.

I'm not thinking now - I'm thinking in 3 year's time when Oscar and Lever are in their absolute prime, and although Petty is deserving of being in an AFL team's best 22, we still have him at Casey. I'm thinking ahead. 

Having said that, he may force us to use Lever on a mid-sized forward, which wouldn't be the worst thing.

Not Casey but I just tuned into the telecast of Williamstown v Richmond at Point Gellibrand and those Willy boys are still sparring against the opposition as if last week’s game was still going. I expect some more fireworks ? any time soon.

if we are building a dynasty these guys should be playing the long game.  They should want to be part of something pretty spectacular.

we are fortunate that atm we have Casey stacked with developing talent and highly capable depth.  We look very low on list cloggers ATM.  We also have some great VFL talent not on our list, showing the way.  

Agreed b_n... and the alignment was hurt the past few years, whilst we kept pulling players to finish their seasons around August and September.

Destroying Casey's and the supporters seasons.  IT WAS not responsible to any alignment and was a disgrace to football. Damaging the game at the grass roots level out in the suburbs.

I agree with you (kind of). I'll agree that in year 3 if Petty still hasnt played a game of AFL and his trajectory has continued upwards he'll be on his way to a club he can play AFL week in week out with. However, I see a spot for all 3 (and Joel Smith) in Year 3. Oscar is the one-on-one guy, with Petty able to do this as well against the double key forwards. This allows Lever to play 3rd man up and loose in defence which is perfect for him. He is able to play small but really with a zone and team defence, he really should not be playing one-on-one (which he really hasnt done since Round 2). 

Petty reads the play really well, has great hands, and from what we have seen thus far can kick and make good decisions. If he has a tank, then it doesnt matter that he is 197 and we have 4 blokes down there above 190cm. If they are able to play 90% game time and hold down the fort, it means that we are rotating our mids; which is going to come in handy considering they are going to reduce the interchange cap by the looks of it. 

 

Having the Casey game on TV was great so we could all see how the development is progressing and hopefully in 12-24 months time we will have all Casey games televised.

This is an odd discussion. What do we do with a player who hasn't played a game yet three years from now if he can't break in for a game due to our all-star line-up? Lever just went down with an ACL. Our most important forward is now Tmac. [censored] happens.

List management is all about crystal ball gazing.

we could absolutely play McDonald, Petty and Lever down back over the coming years. I would say that will be our preferred option from next year and beyond.

With Gawn, Hogan, T McDonald, Lever, Petty and O McDonald we will have the most mobile talls in the competition and have a massive advantage on the rest of the competition.

Only looking at how the Casey boys fit into our back development.  Hibbard is AA standard, and probably will be for the next 3 years - he isn’t going anywhere!  (I did overlook him because he is a lock)

VFL ex VDA has always had a lot of thuggery but if it is to remain the AFL Victorian second tier then the AFL need to get real and and facilitate better scrutiny and appropriate punitive action for these off ball incidents in particular.  This is one big reason I was happy to see Gus “rushed back” into MFC and not risking getting decked behind the play by some lowlife

Good observation re the max game time numbers by the tall defenders - I think I saw that Oscar averages >90% and if other talks can then it is great for the mids.

Doing better than Hunt doesn't cut it. Hunt has shown what he is capable of on the big stage and if he can clean up his kick and get his confidence back he is proven AFL at minimum. Baker is mature age and has been in the system.

Mature age? He turned 20 a month ago (I still have trouble with them referring to Bayley Fritsch as mature aged). Oskar was cut from the Brisbane development Squad  as a 17yr old.

So gee, yes, he has been  in the system. You really are a modern instant gratification supporter. For years supporters raged  about the lack of support and development of our list.......... take a breath and let our coaches develop a player with potential.

yep, don't disagree with that 

but in a post vince, post lewis world, i still see jones as a midfield rather than back flank rotation

i don't want brayshaw going anywhere near the half-back flank either, so really it's harmes as the other option currently on our list

who knows, we may have someone emerge in the second half of the year as a defensive option...dion johnstone, your time is now

next year we'll have lewis, and i see no reason not to have vince either given the form he's in and we can sign him on a one-year deal

but i really hope hunt does work out a way to become something more

Re-edit apologies: Wanted to completely re-write a response:

Can't hurt to both have depth and also trade currency. I doubt our 22 will be unchanged though, and plenty of opportunies will be available. I also think that a player that's good enough to play in a senior team littered with AA players, will have room made for them as we adjust to create a dynamic where they fit in. Even if sporadically, they'll be given game time to hone their craft before they're into the team for the next generation in 3 or 4 years time. Brendan Whitecross over at Hawthorn comes to memory, gets an opportunity after some years. Suckling left Hawthorn for a better pay deal, so another player takes his spot.

Another odd discussion is how will Goodwin seek to challenge himself and the team, and challenge the competition, after we win a premiership, assuming we do. How will we change the dynamic and test some new ideas? Give new players a go and plan for the future etc.
