Realistically - again in an elite sporting competition - assessments have to be made more frequently than that. I don't really see what the big deal even is. Posters are discussing the line coaches, game plans, the senior coach etc. What gives the recruiters immunity? Good bloke factor?

Some superstars, some guns, plenty of quality foot soldiers - that's the job description. Enough to assemble a premiership quality list with adequate depth to cover for a modicum of injuries. Not a middling list, not a near enough is good enough top six list. A premiership capable list. That's what's required of the MFC head recruiter. 

My feeling is, like Goodwin and a host of them in the FD, Taylor's got 12 months to save and prolong his job. A lot of guys he's brought in have simply got to come on, plus he must nail this year's first and second round picks, if he's going to escape serious scrutiny. There must be serious improvement in his batting average. Soon.

That's a wildly inaccurate interpretation of what I said. I'm not even sure how best to correct you. I said judging a selection should be done, at the earliest, half-way through a player's career. But Taylor makes selections every year, so every year there will be players whose careers are starting, finishing and somewhere in between. I can't see how that morphs into a performance appraisal of Taylor every "half a dozen years or so".

I should add, I'm not defending Taylor. I'm not saying he's doing a good or bad job. It's the process of assessment I'm talking about.

If you are good enough to confidently judge Jason Taylor's performance (as if he solely makes the call on picks!!!), you should be good enough to supply your ranking of players in the upcoming draft.

Any fool can be wise in hindsight, as evidenced in this thread.

I've never suggested we hire any specific person (except for Well from Geelong in an earlier post). I've said our recruiting needs to come under review.

Hore looks a decent mature age late pick. Lockhart too early to say.

It is not an exact science, because, believe or not, they are dealing with players who are actually human beings, with everything that entails

And no one would argue with turning Billings and 20 in to Salem (who's still waiting patiently to get his chance in the midfield) and Tyson who was very useful for a number of years.

We got it wrong on Kelly, but I will say the guy gets it pretty easy at a Giants team full of elite running mids who play exactly to his style. He has a thin build and light on style when playing inside mid and Harmes ate his lunch last year when he copped some attention. 

The one thing on Tyson that amazes me is looking back on his early highlights how much quicker he moved and how he was far more confident with his kicking. It was never a strength but he backed himself. Did the game speed up so quickly in 5 years that he's gone from adequately paced to slow? Or was he Dave Misson'ed with knee injuries?

Top end pace was lacking but the lateral movement and sidestep were right up there.

 

 

Tyson and Preuss seems to be a fair trade.. neither really featuring at senior level.

Apparently he turned down a five year deal with Suns because he thought North had better upside

Baker looks very promising. Has the speed and evasive movement needed to play in wide positions at AFL level. Really like his change of pace and can find the footy, too. With more confidence there's a place in the side there for the taking for him. Could become a 150-gamer or a bust but the upside is significant.

Lockhart looks promising and needs to be given chances ahead of Garlett now that finals are out of the equations. Boy you've got to be good if you're a small guy at this level. So let's see.

Sparrow I can't form an opinion on yet based on what we've seen. Certainly looks to have solid physical attributes and the courage necessary. Skill in close and ball winning we don't really know yet. We need another inside mid to come on with Jones reaching the end.

Aside from Hore who appears a known quantity as his mature age, the others have not been in the system long enough to make an assessment on yet. Hence the word 'promising'. Let's see if they can make the jump to 'quality senior player'. Here's hoping.
