If we had kept Pick 2 we would have recruited Jack Billings who did his AIS program with us and thats where the interest started.

I’ve heard Roos say this but I think it’s a red herring he uses to deflect criticism about that decision. The whole footy industry was gaga over Kelly at the time.

no matter how many misses Jason may have had it is pellucidly clear to me that he is streets ahead of Barry Prendergast.Craig Cameron and irrefutably Richard Griffith( i still cringe at the mention of the Coctatoo Collins twins )and I challenge you fine posters to provide any data to show otherwise.

That’s like saying a B grade is at least better than a C or D grade.

Jeepers I'd like to be your employee. A performance appraisal one every half a dozen years or so. Generous!

Realistically - again in an elite sporting competition - assessments have to be made more frequently than that. I don't really see what the big deal even is. Posters are discussing the line coaches, game plans, the senior coach etc. What gives the recruiters immunity? Good bloke factor?

Some superstars, some guns, plenty of quality foot soldiers - that's the job description. Enough to assemble a premiership quality list with adequate depth to cover for a modicum of injuries. Not a middling list, not a near enough is good enough top six list. A premiership capable list. That's what's required of the MFC head recruiter.

My feeling is, like Goodwin and a host of them in the FD, Taylor's got 12 months to save and prolong his job. A lot of guys he's brought in have simply got to come on, plus he must nail this year's first and second round picks, if he's going to escape serious scrutiny. There must be serious improvement in his batting average. Soon.

That's a wildly inaccurate interpretation of what I said. I'm not even sure how best to correct you. I said judging a selection should be done, at the earliest, half-way through a player's career. But Taylor makes selections every year, so every year there will be players whose careers are starting, finishing and somewhere in between. I can't see how that morphs into a performance appraisal of Taylor every "half a dozen years or so".

I should add, I'm not defending Taylor. I'm not saying he's doing a good or bad job. It's the process of assessment I'm talking about.

So let's have it for the draft this year from all you hindsight wise arses.

Please provide your player draft order 1-25 for this year's draft so that we can judge you in 12 mths time. Player and number taken please.

And don't spew out the "I'm not a highly paid employee who does this for a living" rubbish.

If you are good enough to confidently judge Jason Taylor's performance (as if he solely makes the call on picks!!!), you should be good enough to supply your ranking of players in the upcoming draft.

Any fool can be wise in hindsight, as evidenced in this thread.

Ask 20 pundits/journos and 1000 random fans if they think we got it wrong.

Curnow was touted as the most explosive and exciting tall at the 2015 draft but of course we went the vanilla choice.

It was the wrong call by a so-called seasoned professionally paid head recruiter. A terrible call.

Are you suggesting we hire Silvagni and how do you reconcile your effusive comments re Marty Hore, Lockhart et cetera with your hypotheses?

I'm sorry but picking Sam Weideman ahead of Charlie Curnow was unforgivable by Jason Taylor. He overlooked a generational player there in Curnow. People can say 6 other clubs did as well but it's not good enough. At pick 9 (Weideman) and pick 12 (Curnow) a clear decision had to be made between the two and Taylor went the wrong way. Add that to his resume please, bolded, highlighted, and underlined.

Not that it matters now, but Carlton would have picked Weed before Curnow as well FWIW

I've never suggested we hire any specific person (except for Well from Geelong in an earlier post). I've said our recruiting needs to come under review.

Hore looks a decent mature age late pick. Lockhart too early to say.

Accountability?

Nobody is oerfect, although some on here think they are

Can I ask again,  are you or have you ever been involved with an AFL club at any level?

Everybody is accountable and sooner or later, particularly in the footy industry are moved on if they don't cut it

Are you in a position to influence the decision on Taylor and his team, if not you are just waffling from hindsight

I have yet to see him make long winded statements about subjects he knows nothing about

That's great. Anyone who provides information about players running around at training or who volunteers for the club is to be commended. This bears little correlation to their understanding of football, the football industry or what it takes to achieve success in elite sport.

You are asking the questions, you just have an issue with anybody who has a different opinion to you

I have actually chatted to recruiters, including Jason Taylor and his team, to try and understand the decisions taken

It is not an exact science, because, believe or not, they are dealing with players who are actually human beings, with everything that entails

I am looking forward to the next AGM when you can ask these hard questions of yours

Again, to enlighten the rest of us, why is your understanding of what it takes superior to everyone else?

Where have I said anywhere that my opinion is superior to anyone else's? I enjoy reading others' views and indeed welcome reasoned, intelligent rebuttals of my posts. Who's right? Who's wrong? How about having the politeness to allow other posters to decide for themselves. Now there's a thought.

Paul Roos wanted the Dom Tyson trade more then Taylor. He identified Tyson as a "future star" from watching him in his NEAFL days when he worked at the Sydney Swans Academy.

The Toumpas instead of Wines was Todd Viney who was our recruiting manager for 12 months while we used that time to scout Jason Taylor.

If we had kept Pick 2 we would have recruited Jack Billings who did his AIS program with us and thats where the interest started.

And no one would argue with turning Billings and 20 in to Salem (who's still waiting patiently to get his chance in the midfield) and Tyson who was very useful for a number of years.

We got it wrong on Kelly, but I will say the guy gets it pretty easy at a Giants team full of elite running mids who play exactly to his style. He has a thin build and light on style when playing inside mid and Harmes ate his lunch last year when he copped some attention.

The one thing on Tyson that amazes me is looking back on his early highlights how much quicker he moved and how he was far more confident with his kicking. It was never a strength but he backed himself. Did the game speed up so quickly in 5 years that he's gone from adequately paced to slow? Or was he Dave Misson'ed with knee injuries?

Top end pace was lacking but the lateral movement and sidestep were right up there.

You wrote in another thread -

Hore is a quality recruit. I think he keeps Jetta out of the first choice back six. Quicker and better in the air. Love Nev but Marty is an upgrade moving forward.

Baker looks very promising. Has the speed and evasive movement needed to play in wide positions at AFL level. Really like his change of pace and can find the footy, too. With more confidence there's a place in the side there for the taking for him. Could become a 150-gamer or a bust but the upside is significant.

Lockhart looks promising and needs to be given chances ahead of Garlett now that finals are out of the equations. Boy you've got to be good if you're a small guy at this level. So let's see.

Sparrow I can't form an opinion on yet based on what we've seen. Certainly looks to have solid physical attributes and the courage necessary. Skill in close and ball winning we don't really know yet. We need another inside mid to come on with Jones reaching the end.

If you could answer the question - how do you reconcile comments like these with your thesis on Jason Taylor

Aside from Hore who appears a known quantity as his mature age, the others have not been in the system long enough to make an assessment on yet. Hence the word 'promising'. Let's see if they can make the jump to 'quality senior player'. Here's hoping.

You left Keilty off the list I wrote.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
