ive read this twice and have no idea what your point is

he rated us as top 8 and now changed his mind based on our performances? and he should not have?

You obviously never watched AFL 360 tonight.

Geelong play Collingwood. The Cats have far more to lose if they are beaten by the pies.

Yes Melbourne have something to lose, but to lose to a team that was almost beaten by Brisbane (winless).

Is  far more to lose than the Dees to lose to Suns. ( which wont happen)

This has to be the most ridiculous post in many years.  I just can’t imagine what sort of meaningless life one would have to lead to allow such an insignificant comment by a sports journalist that has to fill 19 hours of microphone time per week to upset them in the slightest.

If we lose to to either the Suns or the Blues I think we will be under serious pressure.

We have played stop start football at best and the rest of the games this round are rather ho hum.

Sound like Gerard is on the money... and he is a very astute observer or so I found him when listening to him over the years.

Typical of a lot of Dees supporters. No confidence in the club. Go along to training and see how much they have improved.

They are getting to the stage where they know how to win. They are learning to play 4 qts. of football. Do any of the journos go and watch the various teams train. Robbo goes to Essendon and asks how things are going. Whately rings up someone at the club and asks if everything is fine. Does Whately ever go to clubs and inspect how the team is coached in tackling. He just makes his own mind up about anything and expects the world to believe him.

Whateley only has top open his mouth on TV, to put off many punters. Should have been a soccer fanatic.

But then, probably he is, anyway.

A media career of, off-putting.

My two least popular TV journos.   Whately and Robinson.

This bloke loves horses more than is quite appropriate for a human being in my humble opinion.

In retrospect it is quite clear that Black Caviar developed her sprinting capabilities whilst Whately was "researching" his book.

I've always thought of him as a boring big-nosed [censored] of a man, who knows SFA about sport, and that he probably still lives with his mum and knits jumpers.

Whatley is one of the best commentators going around and possesses a very football brain.  He certainly knows his stuff and has the ability to communicate this without ego or fanfare.

He and SEN aren’t a great fit though imho.  Commercial drive-time radio calls upon a different skill set.

ABC grandstand and the Offsiders haven’t been the same without him.

I’ve listened and watched him for years on the abc, started as a big fan; he knows sport, articulates well, and commentated without ego.

However, over the years, I believe ego has become more prominent, he has become nauseatingly sanctimonious to the extent, I can’t listen to him on SEN (or the podcasts). Added to this, let me tell you, (those unfamiliar with him), he has a real bias against Melbourne, I know this for a fact.  Chip on the shoulder perhaps

If Whately is bad then that doesn’t really say a lot for any commentator in the game. I’d like to hear some examples of who is better.

you are right.

The Ex players are spoiling the game Re commentary.   It's been going backwards since the AFL and players association made sure of players succession planning, and media careers.

and all we can do is robbo and whately.....  jeeeez.

I have been Watching this moron on Foxtel, and listening to his diatribe on SEN for all of 2018.

I have also been watching him on FOXTEL in AFL360 for several years.

This year he has outgrown his own brains.

He now thinks he owns and runs the AFL.

From a guy that has not played decent football, but now thinks he is a football guru, is beyond me.

Earlier this year he stated he picked Melbourne for a Top 8.

Round 1, yes we lost a game we could have won (Against his team GEELONG)

Round 2 we won against the Lions (no comment )

Round 3  We won against the Roos (no comment)

Round 4 We lost against Hawks ( agreed a bad game ) (his comments were we couldn't make the the Top ?

Round 5 we lost against Tigers (we were with the top team for 3 1/2 quarters)

Round 6 we  demolished the bombers (no comment)

Round 7  we demolished the aints ( no comment)

Round 8 The Dees have the most to lose this weekend. ( sorry Gerard Your Precious [censored] has more to lose than us Demons)

GERARD GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSE AND START LOOKING OUT OF BOTH EYES.  (MORON No. 1)

I know what you are saying, but:

a) I really don't mind if the media and rest of the footy world underrates us, so long as we keep improving and winning  (when they will inevitably and regrettably jump on the band wagon);

b) Some of our lapses within games still righty cause the objective observer to question the MFC's present capability to be a finals side.  Until we consistently put together convincing four quarter efforts against all commers, I think many will have trouble having any confidence in us - refer point a).

I think he is a reasonable commentator, and so long as he knows the players then he is receiving a pass mark. That is my base level expectation from Gerard. We know he hasn't played football, but he is still a contributor to game. Hutchy is the same. They know their role, and even though they may have no idea when they step outside of their role - I still appreciate them. May as well.

Don’t mind him. Gets it right most of the time. Unfortunately just got it horribly wrong during the Essendon saga!

Gerard isn't the most objective type. He would have known Bomber and Hird  had history with the gear. I have no affiliation with any club and even I knew Hirdy loved the snow, and according to every Tom, Dick and Harry - Bomber loved the gear for a long time. Gerard is either very bias or just sh*t at his job, and I don't believe he is sh*t at his job.

lol what a fascinating thread.

Whateley said don’t undo the good work we’ve started. Which is absolutely correct. Probably the least worthy thing to get your knickers in a knot over in the history of knicker knots.

Whatever the [censored] a bex is, have one.

I like Gerard Whateley I’m a big fan, don’t mind robbo either, AFL360 is the best footy show by a long long way, if they were on there own it wouldn’t work but for some reason together they make a pretty good show

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. Injuries to star play

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los
