I think we should be targeting Mitch Wallis, who is a year older and on the outer at the Dogs apparently and will come a lot cheaper. If you can get both great.

Basically the same player as Tyson. Just has worse skills but a better tackler.

I can't find the interview now, but earlier in the season Mahoney said we definitely had enough space for one star and maybe even two. Giddy up.

If we get Gaff and Steven May you can pencil us in for the next 5 flags.

That ridiculous McGovern deal could have been done as they’ve found out Gaff is leaving. They don’t want both to leave so they offer overs.

I wonder how Kennedy and Sheuy feel about that cash?

Jeremy McGovern signed up for 5 years at $1.2m per year! $6m in total. No way they keep Gaff based on that?

Thats insane.

Thats the kind of contract you give to the likes of Dustin Martin, Buddy Franklin and very soon,  Clayton Oliver.

yeah, probably. i mean most of his kicks are pretty easy spot up kicks with not much risk attached. he probably cant kick too much further than 50m. I'd just much prefer to grab a key defender and alleviate the oscar mcdonald effect than to get an outside midfielder. if anyrhing i'd go for aaron hall and would almost prefer him at his money

You really don't watch much football involving WCE, do you. The guy hits up targets regularly, including longer kicks.

Previously an outside player, Gaff has taken his game to another level this year with improved inside work as well as 1%ers. If I was a betting person I'd be putting money on the double of him winning another B&F and finishing top 3 in the Brownlow.

He's exactly what we need.

Would anyone here rather keep the cash and wait to see if we can get Kelly?

I'd rather we keep the cash and give Clarry a 10-year mega deal.

Wallis has skill Tyson doesn’t.

What skill would that be?

He is very vanilla.

He can handball and kick to a team mate for starters. He can make a decision within 2 minutes and not get caught holding the ball. He can kick a goal, 3 recently in a game. He can take a contested mark. He is a better player than Tyson.

Yes but he is in it and available free. If you got Gaff and Wallis, you would be gaining better players and with experience,  to help our young midfield.

I don't think he's up upgrade at all 'Red'...

Just a small example of his work.

"Mitch Wallis’ decision to ignore a short pass to Mitch Honeychurch and go longer to Gowers inside the last minute backfired, with his kick going out on the full and North then going coast-to-coast from the ensuing back pocket free kick."

I think we will be looking at other avenues, he will be a good pick up for Carlton.

I would think so; Tyson seems to need the game played in slow motion these days, for him to get the ball away.

Can anyone tell me how the matching of offers works?

If we offer a short term contract on mega dollars, say $3mill for 2 years with a verbal agreement that his next contract would be 4 years at $400-450 thousand per year. We're essentially matching WC's 6 years at $800,000. (These numbers are theoretical and unimportant, I don't want to argue the specifics, I'm interested in the mechanics.). Would our offer render the Eagles 6 year offer redundant and force them to match our 2 year offer?

Our list is younger than theirs and could probably afford to take a bigger hit in the short term and it leaves more space when we have to re-sign our young stars on better dollars. Gaff also gets a big portion of his 6 years with us paid upfront which he can invest to make even more $'s over his contract length.

I'm pretty sure Luke Ball did something similar to get to Collingwood in the draft. Nominated a massive 2 year price for himself with a verbal agreement to accept less on his next contract.

I think he 'Tyson' lacks 'the vision', that Oliver has.   Oliver seems to have great spacial perception... in that he knows where players are prior to bounce.   a sort of photo-graphic memory of the area, immediately prior to taking the ball.

You need this when driving fast in heavy traffic...  to reinforce your judgement/perception.

Without it, all confidence goes down the drain when under pressure.

He is another who should take up juggling.  And master it...  and then in the dark,  or dimly lit room.

The idea is to be able to focus on an object whilst moving thru traffic, or chairs...  to sort of, devide the spacial perception... to be able to focus on the ball, whilst another part of the brain focus's away from the ball, on other objects about.

- - - - - - - -

but this won't help his work-rate or running abilities.

whatever gaff's nominated club offers has to be matched in $s and no of years - simple

it's not an auction

There's been no matching to date. Can't see a Club stopping a player who's out of contract from going home etc. If it was us they would get a better pick by letting it happen than trying to do a trade. I think they'll end up about 4th or 5th after finals. I would say  their compensation will be a band 1 which would be the first pick after their first pick which if they finish 5th after finals would be pick 14. A better result than any deal they could do with us if they threatened to match. A pretty reasonable compensation for him.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
