No Parking in Yarra Park

Featured Replies

Regret the underlying reason but it is a great thing to see the cars being removed from Yarra Park on some match days.

Look forward to a big Demonland barbecue or similar when the Dees get a car-free match.

"Cars will be blocked from parking at major sporting events at the MCG in an effort to strengthen security against vehicular terror attacks.

Yarra Park will be closed for marquee matches, including the Richmond-Carlton AFL season opener next week."

I think this is a very good Idea, in the recent world climate.

Lets hope the AFL/MCG provide driven Golf Carts awaiting at the stations, for disabled patrons.

Its the least they could do.

Maintining 'touch', with the loyal fans who can no longer get themselves about, and have to rely on being driven to the stadium.

Great for me as an East Melbourne resident.  it will make my short stroll to and from the ground some much easier not having to wind between cars!

That’s a good idea DV8. Just one of the many reasons for the re-development of the northern side of the ground (including the MCC area) was to allow easier access to disabled people. And on any match day one can see the great number of cars in the disabled parking zone close to the stadium.

It would be foolish to disadvantage such customers as they were in the past.

I hope a Defined Taxi Rank is set up outside gates 2 or 3 in leiu of this decision

And a shipload of extra trains and trams

Good luck with that on a sunday night

How in the hell does closing a car park stop vehicular terrorist attacks when the crowd is inside the stadium?

Time to shut down Moomba, the Grand Final parade, the car park at Flemington or even Punt road most mornings since there are too many cars parked on it.

Villager:
Is that "No parking is allowed in the upper field", or "Parking is allowed in the upper field"?

Jim Trott:
[Over PA system] No no no no no no no Parking is allowed on the upper field! OK?

Love that you had to edit this post. I mean, was it a worse gag before you changed it? :)

Horrible planning, part of a Melbourne conspiracy to end cars near the CBD.

HOWEVER, given the agenda to remove cars and parking, this leaves a rather large land area right next to the MCG that would very nicely suit an MFC development...

It's a park....not a car park, let alone a development site!   Like CBDees I live in East Melbourne so I have a particular perspective.  But the City of Melbourne / MCC need look no further than South Yarra and what Stonnington is doing with the car park outside Coles and Woolworths for some inspiration - it's just about where you dig and the obvious but expensive answer is underneath the rail corridor.

As for the policy itself, I'm not yet clear on the correlation between the ability for terrorists to detonate a device in Yarra Park for a "blockbuster"....however that's defined versus a 30,000 crowd game!

So if i drive to to the 'G from the country for a game, where do i park? Is that parking ban likely to be in place for our round 3 game against Norf? I was driving down for that game as i wanted to see our losing streak broken in person.

Have not seen any details so i appreciate any constructive feedback.

Could not find a direct youtube of the line so I posted it in words.

It is one of the most famous lines in the Vicar of Dibley.

The episode includes if I recall a cameo from Kylie Minogue and a very good rendition of Elton John's Crocodile Rock from one of the regular cast. The Elton John mix up was because Alice had invited her cousin "Reg Dwight."

Anyway .... no no no no parking in the upper field !!

Anyone ever tried parking at the G? You couldn't "plow into" an old pie wrapper. If you go faster than 3kph you get a speeding ticket.

It's faster to walk to the ground, then walk home, then walk to the ground again.

After the game, it's faster to listen to the giant rabbit for an hour, then walk home backwards..

Pretty sure that our game against Norf won't qualify as a marquee game despite the importance it has to Demonlanders.

If memory serves they already have bollards there.

Sounds more like the anti car fanatics at Melb City Council have got in their ear.

Don't give them ideas George. The councils would love nothing better.

(They would then fine you for parking in your own driveway to keep the revenue flowing.)

Clearly the powers that be see the loss of up to 10,000 North supports as sustainable and not worth worrying about.

Good to see that government exhortations that terrorism won't change our life is being adhered to.........

What's next? No cars in the CBD?

Thanks Osama.

An MFC development in your park could be better than the triangle on Punt Rd. An unlikely prospect, but a new oval and sport complex with admin remaining in the MCG would be an incredible outcome to finally resolve the homeless situation of our home training facility.

Totally agree the idea blockbuster games being a target versus smaller games makes little sense. More likely they’re confident in the blockbuster crowds turning up without cars.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails.
