He was back to his insipid best.

No marks, no goals, no influence.  And you'd be ecstatic with a game like that ?

Nothing surprises me on here.

I’d be ecstatic if we beat Sydney. That’s the point. JW played a role in Port doing that, we haven’t done it in 8 years! Your lack of comprehension astounds me.

People are missing the importance of Jack in Port's structure yesterday!

Having him forward enabled Hinkley to make the match winning move of Dixon to ruck the 2nd half, without leaving a gaping hole in forward 50.  He also took a key defender which enabled a young kid (Todd Marshall) to kick 3 goals.  And, Jack's hand pass to Boake for his first goal helped spark the turnaround to win the game.

I'm sure people will get a lot of laughs this year from looking at Jack's stats and ridiculing him.  But that just shows they probably haven't watched the game and don't understand the role Hinkley is asking of him.

TBH, I just don't get the lingering antipathy towards him.  We pushed him out.  He is gone.  You don't need to wish him well.  But this petty ridicule just makes posters look mean spirited.

Bang on, Ken Hinkley agreed with you, from AFL.com:

In the past, Dixon playing on the ball would leave a gaping hole inside Port's forward 50.

But Hinkley said Saturday night's slippery conditions, as well as the addition of Jack Watts, who arrived from Melbourne in the off-season, meant Dixon's absence was less important.

Port beating Sydney had zero to do with your pinup boy.

Watts had 4 kicks, no marks, and no goals.

Played his role ?  Is his role to do nothing ?

You're very easily pleased.

I saw it.  It's nice he's giving Jack a cuddle.  We all know he responds better that way.

Have you seen young Marshall of Port play ?

Now there's a talent.

Two games into the season and Hinkley already feels the need to talk up Watts after a dismal game.

He will be out of the side by the halfway point of the season.

Marshall got the second defender because of Watts, he’s definitely a talent and Watts is definitely playing a role in the form side of the competition.

You just love sticking the knives in don't you Petra? Sad to have so much hatred for one individual. Really sad. He's gone, you got your way but still the spite.

Port got Watts for a reason.  They thought he'd improve their structure.  I understand that.  And he'll play some good games.  We've all seen his handy contributions.

Its a pleasant change to see you say something so balanced about Watts.   Much better than deriding anyone who has a positive word to say about Watts as him being their 'pin-up boy'.

Watts' critics are in a no-lose situation.  If he flops at Port it will prove their point, if he succeeds it will because he needed a boot up the bum and a change of environment.  If he plays a useful but non dominant role in Port's flag, this thread will go on forever.

There seems to be a bug in the system.  I just got notified via alert that I have a notification from this thread, but it's from an ignored user.   Strange.

Why is it some posters still want the hang it on watts.

He is gone whether u liked him or not he is gone and the need for some to continue to hang it on him is amazing.

Let it go he doesn’t play fo us anymore.

Yes you're right, it's as amazing as those who find it necessary to keep sticking up for him. He became irrelevant to us as soon as he left the club, except when he plays against us of course.

I was not unhappy about trading JW last year and am enthused about the prospects of Fritsch. But I'd like to see Watts have a really good year and kick 50+ just to see his bashers on Land eat schadenfreude

I don't want to hang it on him.

Then neither should he be seen as some sort of football genius who was sent away to atone for the sins of the MFC.

What a load of rubbish.  Yeah it’s real important to have a player in your structure that has no impact.  That’s  exactly why they have a 2nd rd pick up for him.

To think you actually believe this from a coach I’d laughable

Maybe Sydney just aren’t as good as we thought? Buddy and questionable umpiring saw them past the Eagles, if he goes down they’ll be in serious trouble

I hope so, Geelong aren’t looking that good either atm.

Equalisation is working. No gimmes this year.

It's great the games are tight this year... anyway back to JW... Hinkley and co - knows Jack does very few contested things... he wasn't brought in for that (although that clearly matters to Goodwin) - Watts is there for the spine (as someone pointed out yesterday) and also for the silk - which he has always had... he'll be a good fit for them... its irrelevant what anyone in the football public think of Jack and his softness (rightly or wrongly) - he is not there as a power forward and he is not a 'bull' - he is someone who they  got to jag goals  and help on the spread...heaven knows the Dee's need a few outside runners now (where are you J Gysberts).

Yes we should not have a vendetta against Jack and should not celebrate his poor games.

Screw that. I’m happy to say that I was happy he didn’t do that well and will continue to be the next time he plays a honker. There’s many times as a supporter when you just have to eat it over a bad trade. I’ll be darned if I’m eating it over this.

Without wanting to labour the point, how nice would it have been to have had a player who can kick a goal from a set shot at the end of a game or one who could find a team mate's chest with a pass rather than trying to bounce one on his head all day?

Like he did over in the west against Fremantle

JW makes a substantial, at this stage, IQ offset to Port's forward line when Dixon isn't there. Might be different later........

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?
