Not only did Blight say this, SEN chose to highlight it as an important quote.

Genuinely one of the stupidest things said in AFL media and it's a strong field.

Sth Aussie flagellator.

So is Cornes.... perhaps the two should catch up !

There was a thread on Robbo last week, now one on Blighty.  If we're going to start a new thread every time a commentator casts doubts on our finals credentials, we're going to fill the main board pretty quickly when the predictions start coming thick and fast over the next two weeks.

The fact of the matter is, as good as our list is shaping up, the eight is going to be very, very tight this year.  There are strong, young up-and-coming teams, there are declining powerhouses with some strong top-up talent.  I think we'll make the lower half of the eight, but it's going to be tight -  and I can certainly see why people think we may miss out again.

We're sound a little bit needy for affirmation...

Anyone have the time or ability to put together a worst ever team with every player over 100 games?

I'm sure there'd be enough crap players to make 100 games to make a full team.

Just curious (and also I think it'd be a laugh).

Just a quick look from our own list over the years, we had Sylvia, Godfrey, Bate & Grimes who played over 100 games.

I'm sure there are a few more 100 game gems on other club lists over the years as well.

Whitecross and Scheonmakers from Hawthorn spring to mind.

Edit:
not sure why I quoted myself instead of just editing my post. Brain work good today.

So we have to struggle... to make the 8.

Awesome, it’s not like any of us thought it would be easy.

Can we call it ‘The Zac Dawson thread’

Mal Blight was a thinker. He has always remained in my best 6 players, from memory, and that was headed by Robbie Flower. Blight did some terrific things but often overthought these requirements. He seems somewhat removed from current day practices and thoughts on the game; this recent statement is evidence, to me,  of this deterioration. Last year indicated that our end-of-season losses could be interpreted as the fuel to fire his angst. Maybe he is as affected by these losses as were the MFC players and supporters. I do, however, think that assessment is less relevant for the 2018 season. Melbourne will not struggle to make the final 8 and in so doing, will lay a pathway of learning across its player group that will propel success for the coming season. If only now was the time for Barassi to take over the coaching role and its supervision and intent, but it is not. So our coaching teams need to instil great things to new heights throughout the Club. We may just have a flag in our hands if this occurs because the talent and depth is there.

So much hard work needs to go into a premierships, so much money, so many boxes need to be ticked - it’s easy for MB to say what he did.

1/ if he is right - you will hear it on the promos for Months

2/ if he is wrong - all will be forgotten time finals come around

You are spot on - MFCSS is alive and well with some of our supporters inside this site.

Firstly., that quote gave me an aneurysm.

Secondly, we finished higher than the Hawks last season with the same spread of experience,  so what the hell is he taking about?

Until we win a flag we are always an easy target for this sort of rubbish media sound byte pre-season.

Post Hutchy, (and no doubt beforehand as well in many cases) SEN is now scrounging around the bottom of the skip to find any old  scrap in order to piece together a story (any story will do!) at the moment and dress it up as fact.  I can't listen to the drivel they put up now and switched off as soon as I heard Cornes and Radar were programmed for an all morning / arvo session.  Talk about ho hum ???

The less that external commentators talk about Melbourne the better. For some it might make them feel good or provide some validation about their support for an under-performing club but no good comes from it.

Best just to let the on-field do the talking.

Been a long time since the onfield was worth listening to.

People, we'r talking about Flighty Blighty here, he works balls to the wall on whatever floats his boat at any given time, had some huge successes and failures based on that, logic & reason be damned...... his MFC 2018 comments here will fall into the failure category ?

Time will tell but I too don't believe we will make the 8.

My view of Blight concurs with the dictionary.
blight
blʌɪt/
noun

  1. 1.
a plant disease, typically one caused by fungi such as mildews, rusts, and smuts.

synonyms: disease, canker, infestation, fungus, mildew, mould, rot, decay

  2. 2.
a thing that spoils or damages something.
"her remorse could be a blight on that happiness"
synonyms: affliction, scourge, bane, curse, plague, menace, evil, misfortune, woe, calamity, trouble, ordeal, thorn in one's flesh/side, trial, tribulation, visitation, nuisance, pest,pollution, contamination, cancer, canker

    •

verb

  1. 1.
    infect (plants) with blight.
"a peach tree blighted by leaf curl"
synonyms: infect, wither, shrivel, blast, mildew, nip in the bud, kill, destroy

  2. 2.
    spoil, harm, or destroy.
"the scandal blighted the careers of several leading politicians"
synonyms: ruin, wreck, spoil, disrupt, undo, mar, play havoc with, make a mess of, put an end to, end, bring to an end, put a stop to, prevent, frustrate, crush, quell, quash, dash, destroy, scotch, shatter, devastate, demolish, sabotage; More

100 games is a very arbitrary number given the way modern teams and lists are made.

Experience defenders: Hibberd, Jetta, Lewis, Vince
Young defenders: Oscar, Hunt, Lever, Wagner, Brayshaw

Should be lots of leadership and the young players aren't babies anymore.

Experienced mids: Gawn, Jones, Viney, Tyson
Young mids: Salem, Petracca, Oliver, Harmes, Stretch

Again, a mixture and no super young players. As are the forwards

Experienced forwards: Garlett, Melksham, Bugg*, Tommy Mc*
Young forwards: Hogan, Hannan, ANB, Fritsch,
*new to the position

How many guys are physically under developed? Fritsch and Stretch are skinny but they have games that don't rely on crash and bash. Oscar and Lever aren't full formed. Petracca and Oliver hopefully keep building on their tanks each year.

Where we have a lot of room for improvement is in the team cohesion from guys playing with each other year after year. But that's true of a lot of teams and the Richmond forward line came together very quickly last year as did the Dogs entire side the year before.

Inexperience is an issue come finals but I don't think we can use that as a reason not to make them. 8/18 teams make finals. Not every one will be full of 100 game players.

It's an interesting opinion coming from Blight given he sacked a bunch of Crows legends as soon as he got there in order to play younger players. Including a teenager who was fantastic in their first grand final win. The young player back then is now our coach!

To paraphrase a great man, I don't give a rat's t#*+<~g if people think we will make the eight.

One thing (among many) I hope the club has taken on board during the Roos years is that clubs need to shut out the outside noise and concentrate on what is important. The news media is paid to push a narrative to sell papers and get eyes on screens. Their judgement can be correct (Damo's initial call on scattergun recruiting, King on Neeld being the wrong man to coach the club) and we don't want to see it. Some of it can be sensationalist crap.

When you have followed the process as long as we have, there is no real need to get too worked up about others opinions as we know the path is correct. We haven't deviated. Others people's opinions might have changed but the plan hasn't and neither have the bench marks we have set.

And one of ours is an ex hawk, possibly playing in his last season in the AFL.

In the end, so what. Is it a big difference if you have another 5-10 players who are at say 50-80 games?

By seasons end therell be another 4 at around a 100.. as the Rouge one suggests its the swelling in the ranks at 50-75 that will impact ( gor us ) to a much greater degree.

I don't think we are the sort of club that is a "given".When you expect us to do well, the opposite happens. Why do you think Shiraz was invented for?

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
