Not sure if it has been mentioned anywhere, but the a reshuffle of positions in the AFL sees Trisha Squires as the new CEO of AFL Tasmania. People may not recognise the name immediately, but reading the article makes it pretty clear. I didn't realise she had made a move into Sports Administration, and she will need to get moving very quickly given that the TSL is now down to 7 teams (5 South, 2 North) now that both of the teams on the NW coast have withdrawn from the competition. Burnie will not actually field a team in any men's competition in 2018 due to not having the numbers to make up a team.

Neither Burnie or Devonport have a team in the TFL any more, and still there are people who believe that Tasmania could support an AFL team.

I have no doubt a team can be viable in Hobart, especially if the AFL is propping up teams like the GC to the tune of 25mil!

You tell me if the image of the AFL is better served by a team playing at Bellerive with a full crowd who is fully engaged (and know the rules), or by GWS playing finals in front of an empty stadium, or the GC playing in front of similar numbers.

Not having the numbers seems rather odd.  Could it be that the interference in Tassie football over more recent years is the driver of that outcome?

It’s surprising, I’ve followed tassie football for probably 30 years.... Burnie has been a powerful club, it was reported I think that they only had 15 or so players return after Xmas...it’s crazy! where as a club like Lauderdale, the second club on the Eastern shore of Hobart who I follow have strong numbers right thru men, woman’s and junior players. Clarence are similar.

The economy up on the NW coast hasn’t been great for many years... but I’m astounded at both of the clubs pulling out of the comp. There used to be pretty strong clubs in the NTFL with Ulverstone, Devonport, Burnie, Etc...

It's important for the AFL to understand why the numbers have fallen. Is it just due to a demographic shift (reduction in numbers of people of playing age) or has the population grown but diversified into other activities, including choosing other sports to play? There's nothing they can do about the former, but plenty they could do for the latter.

no, it's more to do with organisational politics. the history of senior football leagues in tassie is overloaded with geographical parochial issues which lumber on from one crisis to another. 

Jeff Kennett runs the Hawks who play in Northern Tassie. Is it a coincidence or is he reviving his economic rationalist ideology on the Hawks’ fiefdom up there?

Unlikely. Kennett is no longer the bombastic character he once was. While I don’t think he’s capable of destroying two Tasmanian teams, I’m hoping that he does have that effect on his Victorian team and that they stay in the bottom half of the competition for a while.

But that's precisely the problem, WYL - most Tasmanians *do* already follow a Victorian side, so either our own side will dilute the support for the existing sides, or nobody will follow it.

Yes, but the major point is that the AFL will not put money into Tassie. They don’t need to. The support for footy is already there. Queensland and GW$$ must be cracked open so the Tax Free AFL can swim in more ca$h and Gill can take a bonus. 

That is what it’s all about now. I mean look at AFLX, as a game, what is the point? It’s as boring as bat [censored] but the AFL still get it on TV...
