Price, while important, is a consideration. But as good as AFL is on TV (and in my view it is one of the best sports for TV viewing), it's still not as good as being at the ground. Emotional investment increases when actually at the game and you can also see much more tactically than the limitations of TV can allow.

I was a trident member this year and still weighing up the cost. To be honest, I love going to games, but my daughter who I was going with, isn't interested in footy anymore. I took her to the guard of honor for the Port game and she loved it, though that this might have got her hooked on the club. I was severely underwhelmed by the clubs response when I tried to chase the photos that the club took on the day. Still yet to receive them after sending countless emails, no one responds. Admin side of the club and member engagement is poor. Particularly compared to what other clubs do. Feel as members we are often taken for granted, Richmond are a great example of how to grow a membership base during periods of poor performance.

Maybe the lower one, cannot stand general admission... but when two home games are played in MY, it is a bit hard justifying premium seating... grand final guarantee is good but we never get close.

My boy has done the guard of honour twice, and loved it. They generally post the guard of honour photos on their Facebook page. Worth checking.

I have checked a few times, but looks like they only posted from a couple of home games. I have emailed and been told photos will be up shortly, but still not up yet. Would be happy to pay for the prints, if i could get my hands on them..

I've extracted a summary and added comparisons to roughly the same time in 2017'.

 

I hadn't realised the Crows had so many members!  Almost twice the capacity of Adelaide Oval.  

Our slogan 'Be a part of our journey' doesn't sound too inspiring nor aspirational!  It sounds like we are just plodding along - the story of the last 10 years.  Would have preferred something like 'Come Watch us Raise Hell' or 'Join our March Upward' or 'Bleed Red and Blue with Us'.  Or anything that aspires to where we are going or reflects our passion!

Clubs set to beat prior records are:  Crows, Tigers, Bombers, Cats, Blues and maybe the Bulldogs.  Mostly the so called big Vic clubs.  Pies keep their numbers to themselves so hard to tell where they are at.

We are on track to achieve last years total of 42,233.  But it will be really disappointing if we cannot convert last year's bumper crowds to members, especially given the level of talent in the team.  Based on those crowds, our talent and 2017 improvement, 45,000 would be a realistic 2018  ie a 6.5% increase.  I suspect a lot of people haven't forgiven or aren't yet convinced.

It's not out of the realms of possibility. Have some faith OD. The competition is very even, look at last year's finals series not any stand out teams at all.

That may well be true but you have to judge the MFC on more than look what has happened the last two years. We need a good run on the injury front because our depth is still not great and we have large numbers of kids who need consistent performance. 7th or 8th finish in 2018 is the best I can see from our list.

We've cost ourselves as much as 10k additional members on the back of that colassal round 23 failure. From a membership perspective this year will be just like any other: hoping members from the previous year sign up, and promising hope and progress to the disengaged. We have nothing tangible or historical to back up any campaign we come up with. Gonna be another tough season for the marketing and membership team. They've been stretching the figure for years. They do a fine job considering the circumstances but they always seem to just scrape over milestones.

Interesting figures for GWS membership. It shows a membership of over 20k for 2017 but I cannot remember them attracting crowds of much more than 13k for any of their home games not to mention their 15k for the final against West Coast.

Must be some arbitrage system on GF tickets at play methinks.

This is the direct result of losing in Round 23 last season. 

Supporters have had enough. 

Slogans won’t save us. Winning big and small games will.

Agreed, the slogan itself isn't really important.  Maybe our PR group are also still feeling flat from rnd 23 and the slogan reflects that.

 

To me the real issue is our apparent non-conversion (so far) of the Dees supporters among the extra 146,000 people who attended our games in 2017. Win a few games early in the season and it might change quickly but I'm not holding out much hope of increasing the 2017 membership figure.   

Even if it increases, Vic clubs are growing faster than us (except Roos and maybe Saints).  Our club works really hard but while our numbers are flat/small growth, relatively we are falling further behind them.  It will be a poor return if we can't convert say 10% of the Dees supporters among the extra attendees.

To avoid falling further behind, this must be our 'breakout' year on and off the field!

Yes I know of several people who became members in the second half of the season as low membership guaranteed you a GF ticket

It doesn’t matter how hard the Club works, once we have hit a certain level. 

We simply have to win crucial games to back up that hard work or else it means nothing. 

That’s why i was angry last season when the club produced a video clip of “Jones getting to September” in July. 

The team didn’t play in September and Jones was part of that reason

People inside the club cannot help themselves. That last 1 or 2 % to actually deliver. We always fall short

I guess there's also a possibility that their members are split between Sydney and Canberra with those members not travelling between the cities. Mind you, I'm more inclined to believe the figures are fudged.

Could be right there LdC....

Had a look at their membership site and they sell a special package to ACT members. Strangely enough the ACT could turn into a better market long term for GWS than Western Sydney. Manuka stadium is very well located and the ACT population of 400k (mostly middle income) is a reasonable base to work with as a one team city (Brumbies and Raiders aside). Also offers the possibility of road trips for Victorian based fans thus avoiding high priced air fares etc.

Canberra also has a high proportion of former Victorians, and to a lesser extent people ex-WA, SA and Tassie upon which GWS can build. I realise most will bring their loyalties with them, but any children they might raise in Canberra might prefer to follow a team which actually plays there on occasions.
