Goffer 256 Posted October 23, 2017 Posted October 23, 2017 Flown under the radar a bit but Ryan would be a good addition to our forward line now Watts has moved on. He won the Bernie Naylor medal with 73 goals, and a quick look at his highlights package shows he can play tall, and would present a decent marking option. He was overlooked at last years draft due to some attitude/professional issues but seems to have cleaned those up this year. An associate of mine knows his family from Geraldton and is of the opinion that an interstate move might suit him better, allowing him to concentrate on developing his game. Would be worth pulling the trigger with a late 2nd rounder, according to the AFL website we're one of 3 clubs with an interest in Ryan, WC and Port are apparently looking at him too. 2 Quote
rjay 25,424 Posted October 23, 2017 Posted October 23, 2017 I'm sure we're across this, but he won't get that space to get a running jump at AFL level. It's why Howe couldn't make it as a forward and had to go back... Would like to see what else he offers at ground level. Quote
drdrake 3,203 Posted October 23, 2017 Posted October 23, 2017 Wouldn't like to see this kid in the West Coast Forward line he would dominate playing with Kennedy and Darling Quote
Lord Travis 10,819 Posted October 23, 2017 Posted October 23, 2017 He doesn’t put on any defensive pressure or work hard for his team. Hats why he was overlooked. He ca kick a bag if given space, but likely won’t have much impact at AFL level IMO. Will be a late pick air most likely a rookie pick to a WA club. Quote
ignition. 1,478 Posted October 23, 2017 Posted October 23, 2017 (edited) I'm glad you a thread on him (after I seeing him pop up in another yesterday). He certainly has the talent and I have no doubt he can perform at the AFL level. I'd be happy to see the club draft him with our first pick (if available). With our new indigenous program led by Matthew "Wrecker" Wheelan, plus the likes of Jetta and Garlett at the club, I'd easily back the club's ability to facilitate his transition from both Perth and into the AFL. Well if that’s the case he’ll earn plenty of free kicks from oppo blocking his attempts. I think we’re crying out for a small forward who can drag in a screamer. But regardless, he’s one of the reasons WCE have loaded up on mid range picks this year. 1 Quote

Unfortunately 'McQueen', the umpires don't seem to pay these. Howe was always blocked in his run at the ball when playing deep, that's why he could never get a kick there. It might not be overt but non the less defenders are very skilled at taking away an advantage. Body strength and positioning are key. I know nothing about Ryan, just making an observation from the highlights, which were all big marks, getting a run at the pack. He will take the odd one same as Jeremy but he will need a few more tricks than that. He's from your neck of the woods, what's his ground ball skill like? is he smart around goal like Betts? does he apply defensive pressure? Is he very quick? does he involve his teammates? is he a good field kick? Edited October 23, 2017 by rjay Quote
Dr.D 1,771 Posted October 23, 2017 Posted October 23, 2017 stuff it, you got to risk it to get the biscuit. As much as jurrah was a failed experiment the enjoyment that he brought to us over a small period of time was so good to watch. Quote

Speak with any Eagles supporters over here and they’re wetting their pants over him. Personally, I think for a bloke who can take marks and kick goals against Peel who had 16 listed Dockers playing for them deserves the benefit of everyone’s doubt at this stage. I noticed the AFL article mentions we've shown interest so at the very least I’ll be taking a keen interest on where he falls. I still think the Eagles will select him at 26 which might be good for him because I reckon the ‘go home factor’ will be strong with this fella if he has to move East. 3 Quote
layzie 34,528 Posted October 24, 2017 Posted October 24, 2017 There's definitely gotta be more to him than that run and leap for us to consider him. With Watts gone I'd really like a reliable kick for goal so if anyone can comment on his set shooting that would be appreciated. I suppose you're doing alright with 73 goals. Having said all this our club has a proud history of guys who can take a screamer, we should have one in the side at all times Quote
Lord Travis 10,819 Posted October 24, 2017 Posted October 24, 2017 He has average speed, offers no defensive pressure and offers bugger all around the ground. He has a great leap on him and is a decent shot at goal, but he lacks far too much in other areas. He’s worse than other similar types currently on our list. There’s a reason he’s been overlooked in the draft before and a reason he’s being spoken about as a late pick or rookie pick. There will likely be a big go home factor with him too so I hope the club doesn’t bother with him to be honest. There are other better, well rounded options for us to target. 1 Quote

He had no impact against Peel when they had their full compliment of defenders in the side. He was ineffective against them in 2016 & 2017 which is why as I've said in other threads I have my doubts on him. Most Meth Coast supporters are wetting themselves because they have never actually seen him live. We know what their supporter base is like and they have no time for the WAFL. Anything they know anout him is based on his highlights, the Meth Coast Australian, 6PR and Channel 7 pumping him up. 2 Quote

You watch a heap more WAFL footy than me PSD so I respect your opinion but I still think anyone who can kick more than seventy goals and take screamers at this level is worthy of good hard look. Re ch7, I think I caught a snippet of big nose pumping his tyres up a couple nights ago. 1 Quote

I think of Ryan as another Shane Yarran in terms of ability, Subi had to go down and collect Ryan from Armadale for every training session otherwise he nore than likely wouldn't have turned up. They looked after him really well so puts anotger mark against him in terms of on going motivation Ans as for Basil Syphilis can't stand that man. He would've had maybe 7-8 touches, kicked a run of the mill set shot goal and doubt if he laid a tackle. Wouldn't have even known who he was if it weren't for the chatter surrounding him as he'd booted a ton of goals to that stage of the season. He was seriously unremarkable that day. Based on that match I saw of him, he'll be a rookie pick at best and likely never make it AFL level. He has seriously poor work ethic. He refused to work up the ground when it wasn't working up forward, he didn't chase or put on any pressure at all when his opponents won the ball, he stood around hands on hips and not bothering to lead if a defender went anywhere near him. He makes Jack Watts look like Nick Reiwoldt on steroids in terms of work rate, effort and hunger. Not surprised to read Pennant St Dee's post saying his club Subiaco had to send someone to pick him up or he wouldn't rock up to training etc. I'll be disappointed, shocked and disgusted if the club drafts him after weeding out players with poor attitude and work ethic over the past few years. He's already 21 too, so as a mature age player you'd hope he had developed that work ethic and desire to make it. 1 Quote

I've played against the 'newsreader' Rick Ardon on a few occasions in Masters footy over the years.. He's a dirty sniping mofo. 1 Quote
Lil_red_fire_engine 11,383 Posted October 24, 2017 Posted October 24, 2017 Not interested unless rookie. Looks like a human highlight reel with no defensive game. Maybe its just me but a small forward needs to have the ability to also actually play small. Its a no from me unless he's there for the rookie draft. 1 Quote
