Best MFC team in last 50 years

Yes, remember that terrible accident. This is actually impossible, picking the best side of all time. We have had so many players at the top of the rung, and many of these players were in less than great teams - but stuck it out through thick and thin because of Club loyalty. It is great just to think about them. To recall the thrills of seeing them play the game in their own, special ways, is especially pleasing. How could anyone support any other team?

That is true so true.

The MCG, our great colours, the yoke on the jumper is unique, the founding club our cities name, our history and most of all our loyal supporters, very loyal supporters  and the love for their club.

Ernest, I'm not sure I agree with you. On the rare occasion I see replays of games from the 60s and 70s I'm regularly surprised at how poor the quality actually is. I think we collectively remember the highlights of our youth and forget those dreadful games in the mudheaps of suburban grounds, the inability of players to find targets and the slow ball movement of the time caused by players almost always taking a mark and stopping before determining where to send their next kick.

But it was enjoyable tho... and a less critical,  and analyticalally dissecting time in our nation.

Laughter and passion was far more abundant,  as was trust for one another.

often less is more....   and simple is much more relaxing,  and just enjoyable...  without having to try to enjoy.   Like today's commentators,  have to try to entertain us,  even when they are bored, because of too many games,  & too often.

This is too hard a task, because it is all a matter of opinion. Perhaps we should nominate our FAVOURITE MFC team of the last 50 years. We all have our great memories of past times, and why we like certain players. Some of us may have had the chance to meet them personally and by doing so, they became our favourites, not only because they were good players, but champion people.  Then of course we had the characters, the individuals, who brought colour to the game. And yes, football was enjoyable, seeing these players in their prime. The lack of ultimate success is sad, but there were some good memories amid the gloom. Plus we all made some good friends along the way with fellow sufferers, sorry, supporters. ?

Tingay was an absolute gun before injury set in,  Wight took on bigger champion fwds and beat them consistently,  Healey just gets in but was a very good onballer,  Wilson was good but was great in one year,  AJ was just a champion,  Febes gave us dash,  and the centerline was one of the best ever albeit for too few many games.

Not sure how this team would gel together as far as personalities and positional aspects go .......by it would be great to find out

Sorry, I've cheated by naming so many emergencies. I have watched and supported the D's passionately since very early 70's. My team is somewhat emotion based and I have probably favored the heart over the head with some selections. Left out 3 Brownlow medalists - Moore, Wilson and Woewodin. I really struggled with Alves or Tingay on the wing (maybe Stingers missed games through injuries cost him the spot). Of the current crop only Jones - but I think Oliver and Gawn could maybe find a spot in the future ....and possibly Petracca if he can show continued improvement and consistency AND hopefully some others?? Hogan, J.Viney, N.Jetta.....Leaver??

*Honorable mention for D.Bennett - averaged 2.76 goals per game - and probably the best kick I've seen at the D's

Unfortunately a best Demons team of the last 50 years would get slaughtered by any of the other originals (plus West Coast).

Imagine being a Hawks supporter trying to do their best team.

I can't really comment given I was born in early 80s.

One guy who had a great career but was cut short due to a knee injury was Anthony Ingerson. One of the better half backs I can recall. Was rarely beaten and had great endurance.

Not sure if he makes the cut for many, but I have fond memories of him playing. Just thought he could be foot noted as an honorable mention.

Stop it, NSFM! All this reminiscing just brings tears to the eyes; nothing a bloke at my age needs. Braces! Gosh! It is a great Club and its history/evolution has been like no other. Carna Dees!

I take your point but individual lines could more than compete on their day.

Centreline

Melb      Alves  Wells   Flower

Hawks   Dipper  Wallace  Eade

The midfield would want to dominate because we would have a snowflakes chance in hell of stopping their forwards  (Franklin, Dunstall, Brereton, Cyril, Leigh Matthews etc etc)

I did not imply we would beat them. Just pointing out we have had a sprinkling of individual stars who have kept us older ones loyal over the years.

Half Forwards         Lyon       Neitz     Healy  is also a ripper half forward line however

                                  Brereton Buddy  Cyril    is better.

One player not mentioned (I don’t think) would be the first picked for mine.

Alistair Clarkson (position: captain coach). Don’t worry about the stats count, will do his best work on the bench.

Yes, and finished his career with us giving everything as a player. Does anyone know if he was offered a role by us upon retirement. Looks like another opportunity missed as he was red hot to continue his career in a coaching role

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
