I stopped reading here. Maybe next time.

Anything positive to say about Tyson or was he that terrible? I wonder if your view on life is as negative...

I'll assume you've only ever read that one post of mine, it was about one of your faves, and it struck a nerve.

Can you honestly say Tyson doesn't do the things I said? And would he not be a much better player if he finally tidied his game up?

Very impressed with Hogan's ground work when the ball went to ground at contests. Won it well and rewarded with three goals. Great to see him improve this aspect of his game.

Kept his feet was the most important thing. Worked his way back into form in the 2nd half last week, continued on with it yesterday. Great to see.

20kgs??? Weideman already weighs 96kg. Not sure how much more than 100 he needs to be. He will need to start playing games at CHF next year after another solid pre season. No room for t mac in the forward line if this happens

Not at CHF, Hogan should play there. Weird should be FF

It's not just contests. It's many areas for his game, which is the main worry.

I'll do a report of the first half and get back to you.

I'll count the good vs bad in all facets.

Sadly Steve your criticism of the Dees is so relentless that you have totally undermined your own input.  Turn that frown upsidedown mate and let a little sunshine into your cold cold heart.  We won! another top 4 scalp with a heap of players coming back from injury.  To get the 4 points and have that happen can only be a positive.  Never the less you are entitled to your opinion; how do the worms taste at the bottom of the garden? :)

Tidied his game?? Even Wayne Carey had his deficiencies. Every player can get better however it's worth noting their positive qualities and not harp on the negative

Picture this, I wasn't at game yesterday as my son was playing in the ones, local footy after coming back from serious injuries over past couple of seasons. I was listening to game on radio as I was watching him play.

Enter a magic footy moments, Salem gathers the ball skips past a player, my son gathers a ball, skips past a player, Salem delivers a perfect pass forward with rapier left boot, My son also a neat left footer sets sail for goal 40 out and nails it.!!

I was pretty stoked, and excited!! the crowd must have thought I was pretty over the top, But well who wouldn't have been!?

Two great moments in parallel footy timescape!

Like everyone I'm pretty stoked with DEES and will sit by the fire and watch replay today. My son will also be an avid watcher.

GO DEES

A big factor in Port's wins has been Robbie Gray.  He has averaged 2.4 goals per game.  And he has had some big hauls of 4+ goals in some games.

His tally yesterday:  0 goals, 0 points!!!  He did play on the ball for some of the game.  But him going scoreless was huge for us.

He is Port's danger player and the difference between winning and losing.

Our defence, especially Jetta and Hibberd did a superb job of keeping him on a leash when he was down there.

Whole defence played well and the only stat in PA's favour was goals from free kicks.

Extreme views are rarely right.

Tyson was getting his hands on it early but was not mentally ready and clearly frustrated with himself.  He worked into the game.  He has shown in the past that he is a player that needs continuity.

Watts was horrible early but will be much better for the run.  Had a couple of better efforts later.

We just need some luck.  We have the most upside of any side leading into the finish.

The one certainty on DL is that no matter the result Tyson and Oscar will be criticised.

We kept Port to 60 odd points and PA talls kicked 3 goals between them.  Dixon got his in a mismatch with Hibberd and Westoff got one when he threw Frost aside.  I can never understand these decisions and if someone can explain them to me I'd appreciate it.  The other was when Westoff got a handball late in the last and kicked a great goal from the angle.  But I'd imaging in some way Oscar was culpable for all three and the midfield really responsible for applying pressure that made our defensive job easy.  My view is somewhat different.  I think Oscar played very well and the defensive unit as a whole exceptional against dangerous opposition.

Tyson is more difficult to judge.  But for me getting the contested ball is the best trick in the business and Tyson does this.  Goody mentioned him specifically in his presser.  Goody doesn't praise for the sake of it.

Confirmation bias is a very difficult thing to overcome.  I have it but I'm aware of it and I'm the first to recognize Lewis's very good first half yesterday despite some errors.  Those that don't like Oscar and Dom will always get the chance to confirm their opinions every week but it's tiresome and I'd argue doesn't provide balance.

Great win D's.  I enjoyed it immensely and I enjoyed Oscar and Dom's 52 possessions and their contribution to a great team win.

If someone had told me that we would be equal fourth at this stage of the season after missing 5 of our top ten players for many games I would be calling for the straight jackets. Goodwins coaching has been superb

He has to be in contention for coach of the year. Those talking up Hardwick won't be when Tiges go out of finals in straight sets again.

He already displays traits of some of the master coaches. He has added another dimension to the team and always has a plan B and C.

Of all the gifts Roosey left us with, this might be the best of the best*

*Early days, but I haven't had such faith in a coach since Swooper

My main indicator this year is what team is last to get up from a pack. It's usually us (apart from the last few games for obvious reasons). And regardless of stats it's in invariably Jack Viney - seriously that guy has been a culture changer the moment he walked into the club! Our attack on the ball this year has been outstanding. I'm very proud to be a supporter when they give it a crack. I think this is what the great "Checker" Hughes meant by "playing like demons."

I would throw ANB into that category................nearly

Viney was meant to miss 4-6 lol. The dreaded 4-6. When has that ever become 2? And if anyone has pegged it back to 2, did they play a better first half? What an absolute animal.

Wold have to be out of Goodwin or Pyke for me. HIs ability to understand game day situations and remedy them has been most impressive.

For future reference or anyone else out there.

TJs Restaurant & Sportsbar in Ao Nang shows all the AFL games.

Unfortunately we had just come to Krabi Town before the weekend for the night market, considered going to TJs but then we're able to watch it on the tablet

Stalker Alert! Charlie Dixon is in the Virgin Lounge at Tulla. Looks lonely. My wife wants me to walk past and yell "Ow, Charlie bit me" and assures me that's an interwebs thing...

I don't think enough is being made of Gawn's game. Prior to rolling his ankle he was on fire both in the ruck and around the ground. Against the form ruck of 2017, he won the taps and as a consequence we dominated the stoppages. He was integral to all we did to create a match winning lead. And during the much celebrated 15 minutes of goalless action in the last quarter he manfully played under duress and ensured Port couldn't get any clean clearances. And great to see him clunking marks in the first quarter. Really hope the reported ankle scans are clear. He is central to our hopes.

who would have thought in distance covered Hogan was second only to ANB.

Well done Hoges

And Trengove in the top 5 for distance covered at high speed

Nothing special but made some good decisions in hot situations.

Agree with this, but was also exposed on the outside a couple of times. Particularly in the second half. Maybe it's a match fitness thing or maybe sides will try and exploit his lack of pace?

Did the same last year with a fractured hand as well, didnt he? Traded him out of my SC team and he was back a week later...legend (spewing on the burnt trade though).

Yep and came back suddenly marking above his head just to show off.

Nothing beats ungrateful negative Melbourne supporters.

Im glad your negativity is confined to forums and that you will never have any involvement in the club.

go have a look at what tyson actually did yesterday.

Yes, he did have 7 turnovers however made up for it with 7 intercept possessions. 12 massive contested possessions. 6 score involvements and 425 meters gained.

massive game

bandicoot, you're pushing an unwinnable argument. Despite that Tyson and Viney were the pair almost singularly responsible for reversing the shift away from hard contested ball winning over the past 3 games, Dom Tyson is just going to be in the gun sights for a very vocal group on here. We missed him hugely and as you say he had a massive game.

Top post VP, with a number of excellent points.

As you say the defensive unit is playing brilliantly together - the synergy is obvious. Synergy for the back half has always been critical, but now more than ever with  the zone defence being the key defensive strategy. And Melbourne play an incredibly aggressive zone, a real hallmark of Goody's philosophy.

Yesterdays game the back six just seemed to know where each other were at all times and had total trust, as you must do with a zone defence. So may times they worked the ball out in that triangle they use and there were so many examples of teammates coming to contests to help each other out and killing marking contest as the third man. Great stuff.

A player marking by themselves in the back half can look like just a poor kick from the opposing team but is often the result of the zone working really well, something i like watching from the top of the Ponsford and can be easy to miss on TV or from the wing live. Building a great zone takes a huge amount of time and effort and we have it working beautifully as the results reflect.

I find confirmation bias really fascinating. Players like Tyson and Watts seem to polarise views, with some disliking aspects of their game a great deal. For some their errors seem to be like a flashing light and rarely seem to be mitigated by their good work. Whereas other players are universally loved and seem to get a pass with their errors and only praised for all their good work. Hunt is a good example. Everyone loves his dash and run yet i have not read a single criticism of his disposal in yesterday's game. It was woeful, going at a terrible 50%, with 5 clangers compared to the much maligned Tyon's 58.6% and 6 respectively.

Hunt's first two kicks were 20 metre kicks under little pressure straight to a Port player and third was a poor kick to a contest resulting in another turnover. Add to the fact that on a number of occasions he bombed it long into our forward line to our forwards disadvantage or straight to a port player and watched it go straight back out. And this was not an isolated performance. His disposal has always been average but quite poor in the last few weeks. Yet barely a harsh word is said about him. Don't get me wrong he was great yesterday and really important for us despite his poor disposal. Like Tyson.

In terms of confirmation bias a pet hate of mine is when commentators make a point about a player or a specific incident and it gets amplified here on DL and despite most saying how poor footy commentators are becomes almost a statement of fact. And conveniently reinforces the bias.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

The Gold Coast Suns find themselves outside of the top eight for the first time since Round 1 with pressure is mounting on the entire organisation. Their coach Damien Hardwick expressed his frustration at his team’s condition last week by making a middle-finger gesture on television that earned him a fine for his troubles. He showed his desperation by claiming that Fox should pick up the tab.  There’s little doubt the Suns have shown improvement in 2025, and their position on the ladder is influenced to some extent by having played fewer games than their rivals for a playoff role at the end of the season, courtesy of the disruption caused by Cyclone Alfred in March.  However, they are following the same trajectory that hindered the club in past years whenever they appeared to be nearing their potential. As a consequence, that Hardwick gesture should be considered as more than a mere behavioral lapse. It’s a distress signal that does not bode well for the Queenslanders. While the Suns are eager to remain in contention with the top eight, Melbourne faces its own crisis, which is similarly deep-seated but in a much different way. After recovering from a disappointing start to the season and nearing a return to respectability among its peer clubs, the Demons have experienced a decline in status, driven by the fact that while their form has been reasonable (see their performance against the ladder leader in the Kings Birthday match), their conversion in front of goal is poor enough to rank last in the competition. Furthermore, their opponents find them exceptionally easy to score against. As a result, they have effectively eliminated themselves from the finals race and are again positioned to finish in the bottom half of the ladder.

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
