FTA television is interested in one thing only as it continues its death spiral (see Channel 10) ... ratings and we don't deliver it.

The Bulldogs were a fairy tale story and got a few prime time games this year but in truth their crowds have been disappointing. St Kilda v Bulldogs ... the then up and comers against the Premiers drew a crowd of around 35,000.

It's going to be a hard road for a team that a few weeks ago played on a non FTA game before 5000 people when on the same weekend Essendon and Richmond drew 90,000.

The plus is that it is much easier to get a good seat for most MFC games

The AFL has always wanted a strong club to identify with the city of Melbourne for the national competition and downplay the surburban parochialism. If we become great it will pump up the us vs the rest of them scenario and the benefits will flow. Problem is we have under performed for decades and yes we do need sustained success to become great again.

Demons and Pies on QB harks back as someone else noted in this thread to 1958 and the biggest ever home and away attendance on...wait for it...Queen's Birthday. That was also an era in which a Melb-Coll grand final was played with thousands of spectators sitting inside the boundary line so great was the rivalry and the interest. (That was 1955 or '56. Ticketing was introduced the following year.)

So when I say our QB fixture reflects cultural history I mean it's authentic and evolved from the game's pre-commercial, pre-industrialised past. It's from the time when no-one talked about the football 'industry' and when retired footballers went back to the bush to coach or simply went back to their old jobs and were not guaranteed a future as media personalities.

 Kevin Sheedy's Anzac option at the beginning was opportunistic and phoney by comparison, although it has developed into something more since. Other true blockbusters would be Carlton-Richmond, Collingwood-Carlton - rivalries that reflect the battles of the past and raise passions. Hawthorn-Sydney and Geelong-Hawthorn are genuine modern blockbusters, especially the Cats and Hawks.

I doubt QB will go at least in part because this year was such a brilliant contest and neutrals loved it. They loved it for the closeness and the quality of the game, Howe's screamer and finally because Collingwood lost. Narrowly.

Whatever the Magpie nuffies think, the deal the MCC gave the Woods, gifting them a social club area for every game they play at the 'G means they gain plenty commercially from QB even if we do win the gate.

This was one of the more articulate and compelling comments  Mauriesy. 

I think the filth supporters are only seeing the small picture. I remember a few occasions where they gave us a hiding on QB, they were not complaining then.

Monday afternoon must have really really hurt those creatures.????? In 2007 we received 4 Friday night games after winning a final against St.Kilda in 2006 we would have to do something similar this year to reicieve something similar. But look at St.Kilda, what have they done? 3 Friday Night games for them, guessing the AFL thought their performances were going to spike and ours not so much.

All supporters not attend our next game and play the reserves , managed players after speaking to sponsors  2. No access to journos  3 limit all afl activities  4 get someone on the commission  5 no more charity games ( extra 100,000) in our footy department pre tax budget to make up for all the support over the years we have provided all these other LEECH clubs  6 court challange mrp always  7 adopt a 110% combative attitude  8 establish a fighting fund against Injustice ,  9 produce and publish each week our own tapes re decisions and publish them on our website.  10 if they don't like it litigate , it can't get any worse and it didn't harm St KILDA  NOTHING Else matters , drafting ,game plan , coaching, money, speculation , facilities NOTHING, unless we are given a equal playing field.  We have been systematically screwed ever since JACK Hamilton moved on.  Our imput has never been replaced and our influence diminishes  The whole fiasco is about propping up non supported clubs and giving hope.  New immigrants support WINNERS , so do there kids  We're are we placed , now is our line in the sand moment  Sycophants in the media won't do jack  ITS UP TO US _________________

Isn't this just their supporters saying "You can't fire me because I quit!"?

They know they are spiraling into the abyss so are trying to lessen the hurt by saying they didn't want this game anyway.

Next logical step is them losing the right to the Anzac Day game and then eventually relegation to whatever league wants a team supported by a legion of headcases declaring they won't turn up if they're not guaranteed a win.

i always thought the council owned it and that was part of their problems

remember all the fights with council when they left about restoring facilites to a good state. plus if they owned it they would have sold it to developers

Not sure what happened in the years that followed, but the MFC was definately involved to some degree in the original purchase

However, the offer of 10-and-a-quarter acres carried a catch – the Council had to agree to spend 250 pounds per acre towards ‘the making of the streets around and leading to the reserve’. That sum was precisely the amount Trenerry had paid for the land and it was clear that any such work on making the road around the Paddock would dramatically raise the value of the land."
