POST MATCH DISCUSSION - Round 7

How did you find those few Hawks fans booing Lewis?

Personally, it didn't frustrate me, but I thought they were a bunch of imbeciles.

A captain in waiting that helped them win four premierships who was suddenly pushed out of the club.

Bunch of idiots really.

We were 4-3 with 112% after 7 rounds last season.

Currently a game behind last years pace.

What do we do with our small forwards?  Outside of Garlett it just isn't working.  JKH has been quiet for 3 weeks, Hannan pops in and out of games, Trac doesn't really play a traditional small forward role and others, like Kent asnd Kennedy, just can't get a look in.

So who do we go with?   Do we change it up a little and give Kent and Kennedy another crack, or do we look to others like Stretch and possibly Trengove to fill the role?  Our small forwards aren't putting on enough pressure, nor are they kicking enough goals, and it really hurts with all the forward entries.  Too often the Hawks ran it out with ease and we didn't put on enough pressure.  Something needs to change.

A few things.

[censored] we were bad in the first, but we did work our way back into it.

Some of the missed frees were abysmally but didn't affect the game

Leigh Matthew's is a biased [censored] who is losing relevance by the day.

BT is an absolute [censored].

Hamish Mc is clearly a Hawks fan as he was livid at one point and could hardly talk.

I really hope foxtel tell Ch7 to get [censored] in all games and [censored] off theses tosses in the com box.

Viney was good

Jones got better

Oliver was good

Hogan was good in patches but needs to chase harder (can forgive him at the minute but it needs to change)

[censored] you you mother [censored] arse hole hawks. You can all go and shove you head up each other's arses you bunch of arrogant flogs.

Good summary. Off the ground, Matthews would have to be the biggest hypocrite in AFL Footy with his definition of defining pushing in the back by what sort of jumper you wear and the other on the ground rule which i couldn't understand was the new Hodge lying on  the opposition player on the ground rule. Wasting time and preventing MFC and usually Oliver from playing on.

This game was totally bereft of free kicks and nothing Umpires who are so blind they probably would not be able to

It only took 3 minutes in the first quarter to see where this game heading. When the other side comes to play we are done.

Trac seemed pretty ineffectual today, apart from when he went into the centre for a while.....any thoughts?

I thought Hannan's disposal was supposed to be his strength? Unless he's within 15 metres of goal he is absolutely woeful. Can't kick because his ball drop is horrible and he handballs with jelly fists.

Seen enough of Bugg now. Thought he had a place but he doesn't. Give me Stretch's safe kicks every day of the week. Bugg thinks he's [censored] Matt Suckling kicking into the corridor, only difference is his loopy, hit in hope [censored] to 1 on 3's. Get out.

JKH, that's the best he'll ever play, and that's not very good. 0 tackles lol. Wonder how impressive his corralling was. Who gives a [censored].

Jones and Lewis' worst first halves of their careers. That's where the damage was done.

The positves.

Viney, made some mistakes under pressure but he's got his mojo back and really drove us forward.

Hogan. Should've had 4 free kicks that weren't paid. He gets raped in the air and gets nothing. He worked hard and earned his goals.

Hunt, Petracca and Goodwin. This combo got us back into it. One of the more obvious coaching moves that has turned a game.

Frost could become our best defender. Not that he's competing with much.

Lets be honest ...seems like we have a dud coach................ For most of that game i thought Mark Neeld was coaching.

Lol. Either a troll or a worryingly short memory. I shudder to think of what would have happened to a Neeld era team if we'd been 5 goals down at quarter time. Sadly, I don't even need to use my imagination.

This useless club cannot seem to win 2 games in a row. Next year might be our year, but don't hold your braeth.

You're always good value and make a lot of sense Wiseblood. I'm just finding it hard to digest because I'm so dirty on them right now.

Just got home from the game. How  does Goodwin justify picking JKH over Kent. The bloke has been a passenger 2 weeks in a row now. Can't kick goals & not up to it.

Cheers RTG, I appreciate that.  Trust me when I say that the Foxtel remote was slammed into the ground when Smith kicked that goal on the run.  I'm still dirty on this loss too, but I find it takes my mind off it to talk about other aspects of the game otherwise it would drive me mad!

There is still a lack of trust in your team mate in this group

A lack of trust in their own ability at times with the insane handballing

I'll post something less emotional later, but you look at our two captains and Hawthorn's captain. Viney was a star and kept us in it in a putrid first half. Terrific to have him back in form. Roughead dobbed critical goals at the other end and then there was Jones.

Jones turned it over multiple times, cost us two goals and then missed a critical gettable shot on goal when the game was on the line in the fourth.

Many of us have said this before, but he really isn't a leader and he along with a few of our younger guys (JKH, Salem, Petracca and Wagner) made costly errors at critical time.

When Roughead got that free for holding against Hibberd in the last quarter I just thought, "well than Hogan should be getting free kicks at every contest". Hogan gets absolutely manhandled and doesn't get anything, admittedly he does play for them more than I'd like but the defenders physically prevent him from getting to/getting his hands to the ball.

Leadership in the first half was useless

it happens far too often

that is why we lose...

I honestly felt that MFC were really starting to establish enough of a precedence in terms of effort and pressure on the opposition, that our days of sub par effort and intensity, were over. I was wrong. Today was the only loss this season where I felt we simply didn't "turn up" (and 1.5 quarters of energy to make the scoreboard look respectable, doesn't make up for that). The other losses were at least due to lack of conversion and/or leadership and/or injuries during the game, but todays overall effort, was bottom four standard.

I'm really starting to question my mental state for believing that we are anything more than mediocre, and for allowing myself to be so emotionally invested in this club (which is quite likely cursed). A lifetime of very little joy, and so much pain, and yet year after year, I still go back for more.

He got us moving in the third. I've heard him talk about how much fitness you need to be a consistent midfielder. He lost a preseason and a half with injuries so he just can't go like others yet.

Not too worried about him. He's going to be a ripper ;)

Just like ours on Frawley. Cringe worthy.

I'm the same. I used to seethe about it for hours, but found with kids about, it was doing the family environment no good at all. Now I spend my post matches trying to rationalise it, and occasionally wind up agitated supporters who post irrational garbage. It's therapeutic!

But when the match is on, it's all game face. Thought I was going to have a coronary today.

But Saty told me hes really good at pressure acts and stuff.

He wasn't today, said that in Game Day Thread, but he wasn't alone either, the forward pressure was non existent today

Bombers leading against Freo in the heat at Perth. Lucky we got them on the 5 day turnaround. We can only beat tired or distracted sides.

7 minutes ago, Wiseblood said:

Yep.  What they also did, which annoyed me, was they would chip it around the back half, hold on to it and then bomb it long where one of their talls would fly in from the side and mark it uncontested.  O'Brien did this to us all day.  He would be 10 metres off the contest and as soon as the ball was kicked he would run to the contest and jump over the top for the mark.  Clever play, but horribly frustrating to watch.

I think we gambled that Gawn and Spencer wouldnt be hurt for an extended period at the same time.

Wrong bet with history of injury they have both had.

Recruiting error for mine. You only needed one of King or Filopovic and should have had a third mature ruckman  also running around in the magoos.

Message now evident you need at least three match ready talls to start the season. Boy we are paying for our error of judgement.

History may repeat itself if we don't correct this next year.

King probably under the pump so maybe time to roll the dice.

It is time for plan "b" support the women's team at least they have a 5-2 win loss ratio. Go Ladies.

  • PREVIEW: North Melbourne

Can you believe it? After a long period of years over which Melbourne has dominated in matches against North Melbourne, the Demons are looking down the barrel at two defeats at the hands of the Kangaroos in the same season. And if that eventuates, it will come hot on the heels of an identical result against the Gold Coast Suns. How have the might fallen? There is a slight difference in that North Melbourne are not yet in the same place as Gold Coast. Like Melbourne, they are currently situated in the lower half of the ladder and though they did achieve a significant upset when the teams met earlier in the season, their subsequent form has been equally unimpressive and inconsistent.

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.
