Congratulations to one of the Casey Demon young guns Mykelti Lefau who has been chosen to represent his home country of New Zealand against the AFL Academy Australian Under 17s at Westpac Stadium in Wellington on Monday April 24.

Playing for St Kilda City Under 19s in the Southern Football League late last year Lefau had a match to remember, drilling 25 of his team’s 28 goals in a big victory over Carrum Patterson Lakes.

He has already impressed with Casey and we wish him well in his first game for the Kiwis.

He probably doesn't fit the criteria because he's now living here but what's involved in drafting an international rookie like the NZ kid we had over here a few years ago?

Good luck. Maybe one day he could play for the Demons?

If he becomes good enough to get onto the list of a premiership side, then i'd imagine that he'd be more likely drafted by 17 other clubs :)

Went to the AFLNZ draft combine test on Friday. Mykelti broke beep test record by doing 14.9 (was 14.8). Finished in top 10 in every test. My boy (aged 15) came second in beep at 14.3. Jason Taylor and other AFL scouts there. Mykelti looks v promising

Will watch Mykelti play for NZ Hawks against AFL Academy for first 30 mins tomorrow. Then I'll watch my boy play for NZ L1 academy v NSW independent schools. He got opposition coaches BOG in yesterdays game. Then thrilled to get his photo taken with Simon Black at the high performance dinner last night.  Maxy Gawn selected at ruck in the NZ heritage team.

With his growth and rapid development KC i wouldn't be surprised if Jason Taylor tries to hide him in the development league for a while.. If its true that his skills were on show in front of AFL scouts then no doubt clubs will keep a close eye.

Watching that footage and i know its only development league, but jeez for someone who is 194cm he is seriously quick and agile!

So what's the rules for international rookies and (if he's good enough) does this fella fall within that?

@KC from Casey I have watched him several times this year and in all of those games he has showed  some real glimpses do far. Yesterday again he impressed with his speed and power. Not bad for a 195cm forward

In your opinion is he a chance for a rookie spot this year?

Don't care what grade or league he's in at present, just watch him coz this kid has the goods. Kick, mark, speed, agility, teamwork, daring and talent in spades. Give him an AFL run, NOW! Does he have a twin brother?

195 !?!?

Saw him play for the fist time yesterday and had no idea he was that tall.  That's exceptional speed and agility for such a tall player.

Pity we didn't have another rookie spot,  to use.

Yep.. the way he sprinted from behind to soccer that ball in for a goal was impressive.

He is still quite raw and needs a lot off development still.

Can we recruit/sign him up right now?

Who cares if he is raw - we can see what he brings with which to develop.

Can i 3rd that.  Looks very promising indeed.  Super raw but offers power, a decent turn of speed and side steps nicely also.  A few pre-seasons and Bob's your uncle!

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.

After five consecutive defeats, the Demons have now notched up back-to-back victories, comfortably accounting for the Tigers in the traditional ANZAC Eve clash. They surged to a commanding 44-point lead early in the final quarter before easing off the pedal, resting skipper Max Gawn and conceding the last four goals of the game to close out a solid 20-point win.
