So we offered a deal.

Then the Crows countered with a similar deal.

Manager told Melb, Pies and Dogs that Lever was staying.

Then we offered a bigger deal that knocked Crows for six (aka BANG).

Lever gone to Demons.

I think that's what he meant. I have young cousins so I understand gibberish.

Thanks for the (potential) translation.

In any case, I thought Adelaide have a strict salary policy - it would go against that principal to make a large counter-offer, wouldn't it?

All I know is that the more players of serious quality we have in the same team, the higher our chances are of reaching the ultimate.

Even if that means one of our young stars seek a trade for big dollars elsewhere down the line.

I would rather watch our club win a premiership over keeping a bunch of young players for 10 years.

Times are changing, plan for the now with an eye to the future.

In the Herald-Sun someone suggested we depart with our pick 10 and a player like Hunt or Salem. Surely we need to keep pick for someone like Jack Higgins,Hunt and Salem wouldn't trade. So what can we offer Adelaide for Lever, our next year's first rounder, possibly Tyson and our 2nd rounder. Obviously we get a couple of their low end picks.

Would not include either of those with pick 10- especially not Hunt.

The herald sun forgets that those two would have to want to move to Adelaide.

Why are people worried about a salary of a player? I trust our club can manage the books OK.

Lets worry about getting the deal done.

Why would Adelaide let Lever go if salary didn't matter? Managing the cap well is one of the biggest keys to success in the AFL.  That's also why Hawthorn let Lewis and Mitchell go.

I'll be happy if we get him, but it is sensible enough to worry that we are overpaying a player based on potential and we then might lose other talent down the track.

Adelaide don't really have much of a choice here though, Lever is un-contracted so in theory if he really wanted out he can go via the PSD - he won't - but the salary cap doesn't come into play from Adelaide's point of view, unless he wants to stay.

However I agree we need to ensure that getting Lever won't cause the loss of a required player in a year or 2 due to salary cap pressure. We've got Gawn, Tracc, Oliver and Hogan who'll all command very decent coin plus Brayshaw, the Macs etc. who'll also want to be paid reasonably well. Hopefully the club has planned for this and front loaded Jones, Viney, Watts, Hunt and even Hogan now so that if we get Level he's salary just gets absorbed so not to disrupt the team long term.

It sounds like he will leave for money not because he doesn't like living in Adelaide or has an issue with the Crows

I very much doubt that there's anything left to decide and people are starting to jump at shadows.

There's been some noteworthy contributions to this thread that have stated he'll be a Demon. I'll take confidence in those rather than get worried about pelicans like Ricky Nixon coming out with juvenile ramblings. This is their most relevant time of the year where they can just bullsh*t to any Joe gullible enough to waste their time.

Hard to get a read on that, and I'll be waiting for the "love the place was never going to leave" if he stays or "just wanted to be back closer to family and friends" if he goes. I think his partner might have a lot to do with the decision, but then his younger brother plays with the Crows SANFL team so that might be another consideration. I wonder if he does come, if his brother ends up at Casey?

Not directly a pot at you - it's a professional organisation (now) ...of course they've considered this...to whomever they wish to pay overs for currently...

I agree with you and what you've said.

Couple of points i think needs to be considered

First you need the list to win flags before you worry about payments.

800k if rumored is correct is not massive in todays terms.

And lastly as a supporter i love hearing all the good (albeit unconfirmed news), but im not sure i like how public this lever news is with so long to go in the season. Things change quickly in afl

Very true, it is a very long season and when your not playing finals it seems too drag on, for me any way.

I just have a feeling of eddie everywhere plotting something to sway Lever to the pies.

I hope I'm wrong.

@stevethemanjordan - have we got him yet or what?  I feel like we've been talking about this since 2011.

IMO we will Only hear anything in the short term if He signs with the Crows.

Otherwise it will after the Crows last game.

I was thinking the same thing.

We keep Pick 10 and land a Higgins if available. I definitely would'nt be trading Hunt or Salem.

Trade 2018 first rounder to Adelaide and this years 2nd rounder (Pick 27).

Adelaide sound like they will go hard for Jeremy McGovern as Levers replacement at the end of 2018. 2018 first rounder will be more valuable to them in this scenario.

If we want draft picks we need to trade a player(s) back in. Eg. Tyson for 2nd round

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
