We had the chance to take the All Australian CHB in Trengove's draft, but took Gysberts. I went to the MFC draft function thinking we would get Talia with our 3rd pick, as we knew the first two and was furious when I was told we would take Gysberts, who I didn't know anything of. I remember sitting there thinking gee I hope this Gysberts boy is good, as most knew Talia would be a very good player.

We have stuffed up so many picks before Taylor came, it would be comical, if it wasn't so sad. Destroyed any chance we had of recovering.

There too. Recall David Neitz - who had been a strong advocate for drafting Talia - going pale and almost falling over backwards when we picked Gysberts.

God I hate the ppl involved in the club at the time. Such amateurs!

Still can't believe BP has moved into other jobs in the AFL. He was incompetent!

sounds ideal for a zone defence to me

We have enough that can play that role we need someone that can play that role and shut down a power forward. I am yet to see whether can do part 2 as he is rarely exposed to them with Talia and Hartigan. Dont get me wrong he is quality but what we would need to pay (if you could convince him( for not being sure if he fits the role we need worries me.

Got to be happy now that we have Taylor heading up the recruiting. He is a nice bloke, who really seems to know his stuff, but without the arrogance. He will make mistakes as it is impossible not to and it is a given in AFL football, that not every draftee will make the grade. There is simply not enough room for them to anyway.

The main thing is to get most of the picks right and give yourself the maximum chance of bringing in talent that might make it.

Herald Sun are reporting that we are going to make a big play for Jake Lever:

Not surprising and, let's be honest, he would slot in superbly in our backline.  Very interested to see how this unfolds in the coming months.

Words cant describe how big of a get Lever would be, for every reason imaginable.

With the new cba nearly done I would be offering him a massive buddy type deal front end the crap out of it

Not allowed to mate, sorry.

The crux of the article is that we, along with others like the Dogs and Hawks, are interested in either Lever or McStay from Brisbane.  Mentions that Garry Lyon said Lever could be worth upwards of 800k.  Nothing suggests Lever wants out, just that his contract is up at the end of the year and he has delayed talks.

No worries, cheers. Seems not a lot of substance to it then! We need to be wary of mortgaging our future on a player like this when trac, hogan, gawn and oliver are going to want massive paydays reasonably soon. That said, the CBA should increase so to what degree that effects the decision I'm not sure. Mahoney has shown he's a bit of a jet at this stuff so let's hope it continues.

Search 'Jake Lever and Daniel McStay' in Google and open the article at the top from there.

Not allowed to paste complete articles.

Copying 'bits' is fair go...with acknowledging source ;)

He's fair dinkum exactly what we need. First rounder and a player.

First round pick and Weideman fits well for me.

Weideman has virtually no currency at this stage OD.

Then we'd need a replacement for Weed. We're thin on for KP forwards. Hogan for future, Pedo for the next few years. I'd love a third to rotate in so we can free up Watts to roam far and wide. Hulett not looking to good at this stage. In reality we probably need 2 more while Weed develops. Reid is the obvious target there, and if the papers today are to be believed, McStay as well. He's a KP defender, but has played forward a lot. I think he was recruited as a forward possibly.

According to the radio today, heaps of interest in McCartin, and Saints desperate to keep him. If McCartin has value, Weed has even more. He's younger and has done more.

I'm sounding a bit like a broken record, but since the Tom Lynch (Adelaide) trade a few years ago, teams will be very cagey when it comes to trading KP forwards 23 and under...

I suspect also the 2018 draft which is stacked with tall forwards might play a part in teams' plans. That's well into the future of course.

It seems like the Herald Sun, listens to what Gary Lyon and Tim Watson say on SEN, then add 20% and report it as credible news. Really just sports tabloids.

I agree that we need to make sure we've got enough in the kitty for the players you've mentioned plus we've still got a few out of contract this year that I'd liked to be tied up sooner rather than later, in particular Salem. If we could manage to make sure we don't cause ourselves future salary cap issues, then Lever would be a great get at the right price of course.

Who do we have on our list from SA?

Trengove

ANB

Stretch

Kennedy

Vince

Wold they consider a first rounder + ANB or Stretch??  Maybe not.

First and second round pick?

If Jake wants to play for Melbourne they'll have suck up whatever we offer/give them.

Stretch is the only player with serious future potential on the list.

They'd literally slam the door in our face if we offered any of the others. We also don't have a lot of currency if we want to trade future picks, as I think most clubs will bank on us finishing top 8 next year.

I would love Lever, and believe we are one KPD away from being a serious premiership threat, but I don't think we have much to trade, and since he isn't a free agent, it could get tricky!

I agree it's usually weighted in favour of the destination, but most times there's a reasonable trade finalised.

Sadly correct but they are a bit thick over in SA I was hoping they might fall for it.

When DD? I have seen nothing yet to suggest he is more than an ok VFL player.

Do we know what Mr. Lever has in mind for his future, or is he driving Managerial spin at this point?

If you parcelled all that lot up and paid there salaries I doubt the Crows would take the bait TPF39

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
