I reckon it's always better if you don't mention it. They'll be expecting it and so you get the entire night of them squirming in anticipation. ;)

It was very anticlimactic. They were congratulatory and expressed their admiration for the way the club had rebuilt. I was both magnanimous and humble when they wondered why SOS had recruited the likes of Palmer and Smedts and then went into a tirade about losing Ediie Betts, Jeff Garlett and now Zach Toohey.

I nodded and said, "I know the feeling".

The food tasted magnificent.

Sounds like there was quite a tasty side-dish of Schadenfreude ...

It's great to hear your optimism OD. It's going to be a rollercoaster ride from here on in. We're going to soar to great heights but will take a few dips in the process. I just want to never leave the ground at three quarter time again!

GO DEES!

Reverend I never want to go to another game that is over at quarter time.

oh hang on I am happy if we have ended one at quarter time.

We're 3 years into the rebuild and they're one. We played a good hit out last week and it was their first match.  A lot of our players have played at Casey which is a difficult ground.  We smashed them as expected but as I posted elsewhere we don't have a reputation for delivering the expected.

Carlton's biggest worry is their midfield. I say this to my Carlton mate continuously (and revel in it - he gave me quite a hard time during our dark years - always harder to take from a guy that goes once or twice a year, while I go every week).

Anyway, they have Cripps. That's it. To build their midfield around. But if they continue to flail about at the bottom of the ladder, he may well look to greener pastures. Murphy is 29 and Gibbs is almost 28. Murphy is an okay player, but an ordinary leader and Gibbs wanted to leave at the end of last year. All we had were Jones and Viney at the end of 2013. We've then drafted and traded brilliantly since then, but with SOS at the helm, Carlton have no chance to building a half decent engine room.

This is great.

What, you think their Rucks aren't an even bigger problem not to mention their forwards.

Spot on Fifty Five - historically we're not comfortable having short odds - I suspect this'll change in 2017 - a lot of foot on throat stuff hopefully...though I'm sure there will be some blips along the way...and thats fine by me - in clock parlance - premiership window - 9.45

Carlscum looked Marvellous wearing all white

may their suffering and being sod ordinary continue for many more years

many more...

OK, given the pain of the last decade, I am certainly not intending to lift the 'lid' anytime soon.  But, I am more confident than I have been in a long time, that we have the right plan, players and culture in place to be successful.  We all tend to be overly critical of our own team, but I think we will enjoy the footy a lot more this year than in the recent past..  While I can accept the negatives, I am buoyant about our future.

Go Dees!!!!!!!

I might crack the Lid if we beat West Coast next game.

We beat Bulldogs who looked like they took the game seriously, but it was their first hit out too, so they might have been just a bit more rusty then us?

Carlton, well they were plain [censored].

West Coast, will be their 3rd game too, and I'm expecting them to be near full strength against us. Really looking forward to this game.

Oh come on iv'a !

A little courage is necessary. Take the lid and throw it as far as you can.

The lid is ajar!

I will take it off when it is clear the players no long 'drink their own bathwater'.

Round 2 vs Essendon and Rnd 22 vs Carlton were especially embarrassing losses after which the players more or less admitted they let earlier wins go to their heads.  They thought those games were 'gimmes'.

2016 games for which the team needs to redeem itself with wins or very solid games:

  • Rnd 2:  Essendon
  • Rnd 6:  St. Kilda
  • Rnd 17: St. Kilda
  • Rnd 22: Carlton
  • Rnd 23:  Geelong

We play those teams in Rnds 1, 2, 3, 5.

By the end of round 5 I will be ready to take the lid off!!

The lid id off according to Choco Williams on SEN an hour ago...reckons we are a top 4 team as long as all the hype does not go to our head.

It`s a stitch up, surely?!

Agreed OD.  My post was directed to the negativity that still prevails.  I have cautious optimism, but optimism nonetheless

not sure how to read the part about us getting our arse kicked?? I would have thought dermie would say we should back ourselves in for the 8 ...not that we'll deal well with the occasional thumping (I think we are well versed in taking the occasional thumping these last 10 years) I don't think the playing group have been historically good at dealing with any sort of hype or expectation , again I think mr Lewis will be invaluable here

ok glad some of the neutrals in the media are finally subscribing to our upside and potential this year ... for a moment I thought it was all reserved for the Saints.

If first 5 /6 rounds go to plan then the lid is off !

Has anyone seen an old garbage lid around somewhere? Hard to find these days ?

The players certainly kept a lid on it - no fist pump, arms raised or smiling faces at the final siren.  That reaction or more correctly lack of reaction is what gives me confidence that we won't get ahead of ourselves for next week's game vs Carlton.

We have a score to settle - @ MCG next Sunday 4.20pm!!

Lids are for people with no confidence LH.

We will win well next weekend.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
