He would be either the 3rd or 4th option up forward. He can crash packs and kick one when needed. All you need

Can he?  And if he is a 4th option up forward, then we have 4 talls up there which is far too many.

I can garuntee you that Garlett and Kent would kick more goals than him

I'm a big wrap for Nankervis after watching him this season. Despite not having any bags of goals, he's coming along nicely (for a 22 year old ruck man) and has a very strong set of hands. If the price suits, he could be a nice fit.

I really like him. But he's not that tall or athletic so won't make a great number 1 ruck but can be a handy number 2. Isn't a great forward but does crash and bash and has a nice kick on him. 

I think if he was in the best 22 he'd ruck about 40% and Gawn would play more forward. 

Apparently Richmond are keen on him and would offer an easier path to regular footy. Unsure on what we'd have to give up to get him? Early 3rd rounder?

This is an excellent suggestion. Perhaps our club and DL is underselling Gawns forward abilities. He was doing things that Boyd did in the GF with absolutely dominant pack marks without any competition in the air, at times this year.

He'd need to play forward quite a bit to kick 40 goals. As his tap skills are sublime and the understanding between he and our midfielders is fantastic I'd much rather he stay in the middle and go forward only when resting.

I understand the strong hands argument but he isn't a great kick and when your ruckman wins All-Australian honours, you don't start playing him as a forward.

It's much easier for a ruck to roll forward and take a grab on their fellow ruckman than it is starting forward on a gun full back, but yes I think Gawn has value as a forward. He was drafted after playing forward in the TAC. Similarly Boyd's contested marks were often around the ground which is easier than as a forward leading up.

What I like about Gawn forward is he would be predictable and would rarely get beaten, so the ball would come to ground and make it easier for crumbers. Watts and Hogan deep can get beaten but Gawn's extra size makes it hard and also easier for him to draw free kicks. You can't spoil the ball if Gawn gets a clear run at it, so he'll get chopping of the arms or holds/push frees.

40 goals is too high, but from 30-35% time forward as well as drifting forward from the ruck I think he could get up towards 30 goals. Just a matter of finding a ruck good enough to play 30-40% in the middle without us losing momentum in there and who can fit in the forward structure with or without Hogan, Watts and Weid.

Max is not a forward...

Is that underselling his forward abilities? No, it's a fact.

Max is a ruckman who can drift forward and kick a goal, his development at Casey was stunted until he finally got the opportunity to ruck full time.

He needs to spend his time on ball not languishing in the pocket.

    Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields.     Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was.
