maybe we can do a swap on 19 with someone for a couple of other picks one that we can then trade to meet Essendons requirements and still improve our position in another draft position.

19&47 - Hawks for 23 and 33?

Wow huge news!!!

Not sure how we are meant to get hibbard if this plays out.. Id hate for us to trade 19 for him and I doubt the bummers will take our mid 30s pick we get back from brissy. And by trading our 17 first round I dont beleive we can trade our 17 second as well?

Perhaps the deal with Essendon might involve us trading a player? Hasn't AVB's name come up in whispers?

If we somehow land Hibberd, Lewis and Rockliff we should be aiming for the top 4 next season.

Will get the first 2 very much doubt we will have the currency to get Rockliff.

As someone suggested, 2nd rounder, Dunn and VDB or what he is traded for.

That might be why we are trying to trade our 2017 2nd rounder for Hibberd. Then we can keep pick 19 and 30 for this years draft along with those 3 players! Dream result

Adding Hibberd, Lewis and Rockliff for the equivalent of two second round picks, a future first round and a fourth round pick plus a depth defender in Dunn would be a massive signal of intent that we are not just shooting to make finals in 2017 but to go deep into them.

Bring it on.

Lets not put the cart before the horse, & get ahead of ourselves,  Top 4 should be out of our thinking at this stage.

We should be aiming for a very good preseason.  And only hoping we make the finals at this stage.

Looking too far forward is fraught with dangers for young players.

Absolute can not believe the news I've got this morning.

Brisbane and Melbourne have agreed on handshake that rockliff will come to Melbourne for Dunn. We will give our first rounder for next year to Brisbane (which we bank on being 9-13) for Brisbane priority pick this year (19) as well as turning our second round pick (29) into a pick in mid 30s, which Brisbane are trying to get their hands on before end of trade week.

This is also delaying the Hibberd deal.

Brisbane will pay a portion of the salary. The only things holding this deal up are Brisbane not having a mid 30s pick yet, and rockliff not having results from a medical back yet.

Melbourne in- rockliff, end of round 1 pick (19); mid 30s pick.

Out, Dunn, 2017 Rd 1 pick (9-13) 2016 Rd 2 pick) 29

Source- both the new Brisbane football operations manager; and my uncle, fitzroy great, Brisbane scout and father of current afl captain. Oh and for any sceptics which I'm sure there are, this is out of the mouth of both.

Ah gee. I was hoping almost this exact scenario would occur all this morning.  To use next years pick in a deal like this.  But maybe woulkd be happier with the lions 2017 2nd Rnd pick back instead of 2016 30's pick  this year.

Please could we change the 2016 mid 30s pick,,, to the Lions 2nd Rnd pick from 2017 ?

Exactly my first thought also, if this is true then The Club is gearing up to something serious!

dear god...  if this is true i will collapse.  I hope your sources are legit and youre not yanking our chains

If we get Lewis, Rockliff and Hibberd and Grimes, M Jones, Dunn depart it would be an unbelievable trade period and once again would be with no leaking from the Club.

this occurs I honestly couldn't care if we only finish with picks above 40-50 this year, even next. It's classic successful team trading, win now, deal with the future then. And when the future comes round, do it well again because your successful.

We would become odds on for finals, and players like VDB, Wagner, Kent or Salem may find getting a game much harder.

seems low risk for huge reward

So do we then pass on 19 for Hibbered and hope to get an upgrade on our third round pick?

Nope, play hard ball, & stay the course with our 2017 2nd Rnd Pick for Hibberd.  Hibberd will be a Dee.

Have balls Dees.

If we got pick 19 would the thought of trading up via something with GWS be worth considering?

I love trade week.

The amount of times I have gone back and forth between this thread and the Lewis thread is making me dizzy.

Make it stop!!

I guess that would work too, but probably a bit high. Unless it was plan b for Brisbane not getting the mid 30s pick. Anything else and I'd only be speculating, that's just what I my news was. For what it's worth, I tried contacting my moderately reliable demon sources, and they either know nothing or are keeping very quiet on it.

Not my style mate. Just lucky to have a few contacts and don't want fellow dee tragics missing out on what I hear.

Well... Looks like trade weeks heating the [censored] up now! What a time to be alive!

I don't really believe it. And I wouldn't be that excited by it. Rockliff is an average players IMO. And I've wanted to keep our. 2017 1st because - A - next years draft is STACKED. And B - We need picks to land a big fish next year. Eg. Fyfe, Martin, Heeney. Rockliff can't kick, can't go forward and has a bad attitude

One of those players might nominate us if we make the top 4 with Rockliff, Lewis & Hibberd having an immediate impact.

Just two days ago some people were complaining that Mahoney was doing nothing. Same thing happens every trade period.

Never underestimate Sir Mahoney.

I'm not one to wish my life away but if all this comes off I just want the 2017 season to hurry the feck up.

Pretty bizarre trade period if we land Hibberd, Rockliff and Lewis.

I'm not sure what to make of it actually.

Interesting also that there has been no mention anywhere of us being interested in any backup for Gawn which imo is our most pressing need.

We're looking around and have a few cheap options in mind, Goodwin is keen to have three genuine ruckman who can go to AFL level at any time, Gawn and Spencer and one more as either a DFA or late pick in the draft

Might be looking for a mature age ruckman I reckon. Maybe jag one from the state leagues with a late pick or rookie draft.

His stats seem to be reasonable will certainly add something to our midfield and potentially forward, he is still relatively young, a new start in a team that can help and support him who knows...

Having Hibberd, Rockliff and Lews (if all true) come in with Melksham who has been sitting on the sidelines with a couple of end of draw picks and rookie upgrades should be enough for this year, we need to keep an eye on having some decent picks next year, as any new player we get this year is not likely to be getting a game this year with the current side and our new draftees.

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
