I love this time of the year.  Really, I do.

We've heard from one poster about Rockliff.  Even Chook in Perth, who has more cred than anyone here, said we had no interest.  But as some here having nothing else to do (Abe, have you posted 1,000 times in the last 2 days?) it gets some traction and people get excited.  Mahoney saying we have absolutely no interest at this point of the trade period is more than enough confirmation.  Saying you can't trust him is a way of trying to keep the belief alive.

It 'aint happening.

Hearing it from the horses mouth has confirmed it for me. Rockliff is not coming to the Dees.

Me too.  I understand why others want to approach it with deaf ears.  I would have done the same a decade ago.  But with everything that's happened so far, I think Mahoney knocking it on the head rather than giving some sort of confirmation is more than enough for me.

That's not actually what Chook said. And he's since corrected another poster for misquoting him. Chook just said that Brisbane hadn't heard about the complex deal originally proposed by GD. Anyway, not really your point.

21 hours ago, Chook in Perth said:

I didn't say that.

I said Brisbane knew nothing about the complex trade posted.

"Are you working on a complex deal  involving Dunn and future picks with Melbourne for Rocky?"

"No."

People  I trust are now talking about this. I'm approaching cautious excitement. Will be working the phones tomorrow.

False rumour. Many people feeling stupid for believing it. Try to justify why the rumour was not really false. Hilarity ensues.

Every year.

What horses mouth?

Have you considered the possibility that it wasn't Mahoney's voice at all but that it was a dubbed voice over?

People claim that about me all the time you know.

Didn't realise i had posted as much as i have haha, apologies to anyone else who was frustrated by that, happy for the mods to put a limit on my posting or something if they feel that's needed.

real shame that this one hasn't come through, Rocky would have been a great inclusion.

Sorry mate, wasn't having a go.  Just noticed you posting heaps, although I know that you thoroughly enjoy this time of the year.

Horse [censored] is manure.

Manure is good for plants.

Plants can be found at the top of CLIFFS where there are also ROCKS.

Break out the champagne glasses people, it's happening! Thanks Chook!

According to a poster in the Jordan Lewis thread we've been into Rockliff for weeks and we are the front runners. This was of course, only posted after the rumours started.

I got tagged in a facebook post staying this was a 99% complete deal. Had a look at who was making the noise about it and it was all from fans, and not one media person. That was probably the first hint.

I really don't get how people can have pretty detailed info, who are trusted posters, for there to be nothing behind them.

Sure, it might not work out in the end, but there must be something happening with Rocky for all the noise to be coming out from multiple places.

Same with Fyfe to the Blues. many people have said that there have been meetings, but there has been nothing really said about it. Surely that wouldn't be all made up?

I've been advised that we are deep into negotiations with Rockliff's management and if he was to switch clubs it will be to us. The only issue we have is his poor attitude so we are putting some work into assessing whether or not he will be a good fit in our team going forwards.

This is pretty much how it's done. Start confident and work a little something in there so when he doesn't come you have an out as to why the trade didn't happen.

Most don't have detailed info, they simply make it up, the trick is in the details. Chook in Perth is someone whose posts I believe, he doesn't work little 'outs' into his posts and is straight to the point.

Don't know why, but Josh Mahoney flat out denying whether we had any interest in Rockliff combined with Chook In Perth's (who has a good track record) source makes me think this isn't happening.

It was fun while it lasted. The recruitment of Lewis and Hibberd is still a fantastic result for the club.

It's plainly b.s.

That said, the prospect of recruiting Hibberd, Lewis and Rockcliff in one trade period for sweet f.a. in return was the stuff of dreams.

And that, it seems, is all it was.

Fingers crossed on Hibberd and Lewis though. Those two trades seem realistic and both of those players will improve our list, potentially significantly.

Suppose I start a thread stating that my aunty really has balls, so I must call her Uncle. I'll organise a couple of other posters to support this and say they have seen or even felt said balls and there you go - credibility established.

Bitter but often sick

Now that it's been established there's no interest, can someone please clearly explain to me what's so wrong with Rockliff?

I just don't get why someone could be bothered, especially when they have been on the money in the past. There have been multiple too, and just last week there were the Lewis rumors which came true a few days later.

All I know for sure is that all the journos say Lions want him out pretty badly.

Very little that I can gather. We all know he can play footy as a mid or forward (some question his disposal). There is talk that he is a less than subtle communicator and, as I posted earlier, some doubts about his leadership.

Maybe we can deduce that despite his footballing abilities, his personal attributes have lead to some friction. Perhaps we can further deduce that without the responsibilities of leadership (an a new coach) his footy abilities would speak for themselves.

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Hawthorn and Melbourne. Two teams with impressive form from last week but with seasons that are travelling on different trajectories meet in Saturday’s twilight game for what could well be the most intriguing contest of the AFL’s penultimate round. Sadly, the game has been relegated to that unappealing time slot in the weekend when Melburnians are typically preoccupied with activities other than football. It falls between the morning's shopping, afternoon sport and recreation, and Saturday night fever. A time usually reserved for relatively insignificant events but this one is not a nothingburger for either of the clubs or their fans.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
