Lumumba placed on long-term injury list

No big deal.  Only cost us Clark who has been equally useless for Geelong.

Interesting decision to do this so late in the season. Isn't the only benefit of this to upgrade a rookie? Which rookie needs an upgrade? Michie?

Is that code for: we've seen the last of him?

In that article they note the following:

Coach Paul Roos told reporters earlier in the day at AAMI Park that the club was hopeful Lumumba would return.

“We’re just hoping that ‘H’ gets right and comes back to pre-season and has a good year next year,” he said.

Hopeful? That's a long way from confident he'll play again. A shame if true

No big deal in the scheme of trading, but it's probably a big deal for H and his health. Hope it improves for him.

I think you'll find it's optionality in case we make the finals.  Might not be as late in the season as we all think it is ;)

Hopefully he retires, his health is more important.

Fingers crossed we never have any injuries again and are able to run our best 22 out every week. Why even have 38 on the list?

Exactly. Best 22s are fluid. Love the player or not, I see no upside to an AFL capable player on our list being in this position, and that's not to mention the human side of this.

The grave-dancing that goes on on this site is nauseating sometimes.

The phrase microcosm of society comes to mind

Anyone have any idea on what the point is of putting him on the LTI list at this stage of the season? Haven't we already upgraded Michie, Wagner and White? Wouldn't have thought either of Smith or King are anywhere near getting a game.

It's strange, especially as we'll be going full tilt the next couple of weeks and probably can't afford to blood these guys now.

Others have mentioned to me it could be a part of paying him out for next year without it being included in the salary cap. Not sure if that's something that can be done, but it's a theory.

I would guess it is a Medical Insurance issue or a clause in a contract.

I assume it's pay related. Either to make him eligible for something (ie a player welfare decision) or to jump through some loophole in the salary cap.

I don't think it has any practical implication for the team.

I am entirely speculating through.

Yep, that was my thinking, just interested as to the clues it may have given us about his future.

A premiership side is made up of at least 30 players all of whom can play their role when required.

Fortunalty our injuries have been minimal this year however just like north and the pies we could see up to 8 players out at once next year.

If H is healthy and wants to continue football next season then he will be a valuable asset.

I dont think anyone is glorifying his ill health or ill fortune. It was considered that he would fill a role and fit a need when we got him. In that musical chairs of player swaps, two teams haven't done too well out of it.

H is a bit 'out there' but I'll bet has had a positive impact on more than a player or two at our club.

We all hope for long term good health for H, or at least we all should.

I think it would be insurance-related.
I seem to recall a similar situation with Steve Nash at the Lakers.

Injury-forced retirement and if he were to come back and play, he'd have to forfeit his payout even though he seemed more than capable.

We don't have that many experienced players yet and I think if he was fit and in form he'd still have a role to play on the wing or half-back.

Maybe not necessarily every week but in the mix for selection.

I think that trade cost us Varcoe, and we should have done a direct swap. Collingwood clearly came out on top.
