I was there too and they still beat us, I think Iva is thinking of another day when we won there, which wasn't often.

If I recall Biffen was involved in this as well, correct me if I'm wrong.

Yep,  dementia clearly has set in.  I was getting my years mixed up.  Barry was still lucky in my view though. It was a crude attempt at best.

I think they went after him, he was finished after that, it basically ended his career.

I was there the day Barry Bourke took out Hudson.  Hudson had 8 till half time.  I reckon Barry ran 50 metres to take Hudson out. You can only wonder what the MRP would have done to him, if such an action happened today.  We ended up winning that day, with Frankie Giampaolo kicked the winning goal from the goal square at the swimming pool end.  Great memories.

Hope we can crate some new ones soon. Love the train driver's actions.

Strong saving mark by number 5, and he later cleaned up an errant Barassi handpass - what a memorable month was starting to unfold for Neil Crompton!

And talking about Barassi: loved his intensity standing the mark; the mark he took at 2.39 was brave, with a ruthless John Peck steaming at him from the other direction ("a nice easy chest mark" according to the commentator!!!!); and the subsequent handpass was an eye opener for me, as those were the days of the "don't handball on the backline!" golden rule - and this was before the 1970 GF where Barass allegedly invented the handball game.

I must confess I can't recall games results around that time, it was a while ago after all.  The only thing I can say is that they won flags in 1961 and 1971 and became a much better side after that whereas we were on the downhill from 1964 on, we won the first 8 in 1965 but only won one more for the year. 

It was a dreadful ground with one side jammed up against the railway line with just a few terraces for standing room, the ground was very narrow and was boggy even after a small amount of rain, they knew how to play it better than other teams.

I remember saying to my dad at the game  that Huddo would break Fred Fanning's record today .  He kicked 8 of Hawthorn's 9 first half goals and didn't make it to half-time !  There was nothing dirty about the Bourke contact , he simply fell  very awkwardly and wrecked a knee.  These days , he would have the reco and be back for the next season .  We lost that game by 5 goals .

Amazing footage. The commentary is priceless. The days when commentators called the game and did not fill up the airwaves with analysis, anecdote, and stories of their own greatness. Think of Dermot Brereton's drivel last week.

And how tough was Barassi? He runs over the mark straight at Alan Joyce and cops a boot in the face....and does not flinch or react.

Glenferrie Oval always had a glue pot in the centre that the Hawks used to great advantage. Coaches and ground staff colluded to keep it that way. Shows that despite atrocious conditions by today's standards. matches could still produce exciting and gripping footy.

I was there in 72 for Huddos knee.  April fools day.  Lou in the Sun had predicted Huddo would be off by half time…...

Some fabulous memories in that footage.  I can almost smell the liniment.

I was at Western Oval the next week when lowly Bulldogs beat us

Super upset as I had to turn up at School at Nth Footscray on Monday where 95% of kids were rabid Dogs supporters 

 

 

My old man always used to school me about how good this team was. It was great to see it with my own eyes.

I was also at that game, standing on top of the toilets at the swimming pool end as a kid, great view from up there

this could bring on a discussion about all the wonderful places we watched the footy from.

I can remember being at Princes Park in 1965 watching the game from on top of a small tin shed down at the Carlton end. I also remember a big brawl between some spectators that day.

Cannot remember who won but it would of course have been the big grudge match with Barassi playing against his old team.
