First son of a past player to win a MFC B&F, congrats Jack

Ahh no that title still belongs to RDB.

Well done, Jack! This is not quite right though -- Ron Barassi (junior) won a Bluey, and he was the original father-son selection ...

Sorry, I meant first Father & Son to win B&F

Is that the first father son winner though?

Yes first father-son to both win.

Because that's how the coaches saw it. Let's just congratulate and celebrate. Well done winners. All will be on our next premiership team ?

By scoring 261 to Jettas 260

Would have two best and fairests already if he didn't miss 6 games last season.  What a champion in the making.

Yep. And I reckon the memory of playing on Dangerfield in the last round will be driving him pre season rather than feeling comfortable as a B & F winner. He is an unbelievably driven and proud young man.

Thats now 9 top five finishes for Nathan Jones, including three wins and twice Runner up.

Edit - it is 8 , not 9.

Wow.....that is elite.

True champion.

Thanks for the B&F all time list David Neitz9. Amazed to be reminded that the great Robert Flower only took out one Bluey. Plenty of runners up though.

Where did you get this list? They got RD wrong with two Rs in his name. Barrassi should have been Barassi. Oh well Ron wouldn't be too upset. Well done Jack Viney and all the boys in the top ten. Roll on season 2017.

Congratulations to all the recipients, but massive kudos to Viney. Everyone talks about the expectation placed on the no. 1 draft pick but I would argue there was almost the same amount of expectation placed on Jack and it hasn't phased him one bit. He keeps getting better and better.

Jonesy is such a champ, runner up and a lot of people on here felt his season was a little diminished compared to others. Let's not forget this time last year he was preparing himself to go into neck surgery! Hasn't taken a backward step. Love the guy, so want him to be still amongst the boys when we do finally have success. No one deserves it more.

I predicted Gawn to finish on top, but 3rd is still a fantastic achievement for the big man. Hopefully it leaves him hungry for more next year. Tyson had a stellar second half to the year, if he continues that next year the competition should watch out.

Finally Watts, so happy for the guy. I hope his confidence continues to grow, he has now become a player that can hurt the opposition, and I love it!

I stand corrected - it is his eighth top 5 finish.

The record is held by Robbie Flower, who finished in the top 5 nine times.

Never in doubt. Congrats. He'll win the next 8.

Well done Jack.

He has recovered miraculously from when Saty didn't even include him in his round 1 team for 2015 (yet Jordie McKenzie somehow got a gig) and has gone on to have a fruitful career.

And the three people that voted for him all voted within an hour of the count, and one of those after the round 19 scores.  Nobody backed him, really.

I disagree wholly with your second paragraph though.  You need to take the angry goggles off.  The odd tool might pan him, but Demonlanders love Jones.  The overwhelming vibe is positive.

Back in agreement again with paragraph number 3.

Not entirely true. In ProDee's prediction thread I said he would finish top three. Most didn't even have him in their top five.

Jones might be loved but he is criminally underrated on this board. It's done under this notion that we haven't progressed as a club until he is further down the pecking order. So people try to push him down that pecking order. His stats say he isn't ready to slide just yet.

People might underrate him mate, but the post I was replying to said, quote, "it's quite pathetic the level of disdain that is levelled at this bloke".  I don't reckon I've seen anyone level disdain at him, have you?

Fair enough.  Disdain is a strong word to use, but I do think some have a level of disdain for the old guard (of which Jones is a part) as players, partly because of the era they represent. There is a strong will to move past them that I don't necessarily agree with. I think several of them still have roles to play in the squad, but we'll soon see whether that view is shared by the coaches.

I agree that every Melbourne supporter loves Jonesy for his service. You'd need your head read not to.

I had a feeling this might evolve in to a discussion about Grimes :pj:

Very even race. There were 3 or four worthy candidates that could have won. Congratulations to Jack.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
