Really happy with the changes.  I'm oddly excited for a game we have zero chance of winning.

I've noticed a fair pattern of the debutants getting announced ahead of selection all year - probably quite a good policy really when you think about it.  I think it also makes sence to get Weeds debut game out of the way before we play in a few winnable games he could be a part of and build confidence from.

Really do think and hope that Peddo is in over Jessy this week.  Mostly on the basis that it doesn't make sense to smash a lame Hogan in a game we are outright underdogs and also thay Peddo will certainly give a good presence to take the heat off Weed.  Also give Peddo a chance to make a meaningful contributions and build some form.  I think there are actually some players that play to the level of the game they are playing in and Peddison is one of them.

I thought Garlett was ok last week. He had a day when the bounces went askew, when he was ready willing and able he was overlooked. Don't be too harsh on the man, he has so much explosive capacity.

What I'm most looking forward to this week:

- watching our future premiership side learning from the masters

- a 4 quarter full blooded effort

- hand balling and kicking to players wearing the same colours..... and it landing in their hands, not at their feet!

- A game where we get back to kicking more goals than behinds

- that anticipation that you get in the days leading up to the game, where you think "if we can just do this and that, we're a chance here"

Yep, that's right, along with Riley. Many people were very excited about both, (and Newton the following year), but we haven't had the success that Sydney manages to have with their recruits from other clubs. Although, its probably more to do with the higher quality of the players they recruit.

I think your right.  Jeffy looked like our most dangerous forward any many games earlier in the year when we achieved fast ball movement and played a very open forward line - that sling shot ball movement where he can exploit his pace suits him to a tea.

I've also noticed that since the St Kilda game (at least) we have become much more defensive.  Particularly our score (not sure about the oppositions) the last two weeks have been well down on our average this season.  I'm thinking that there has been a correction/balance that the coaches/players have tried to implement that may have overshot the mark a bit.  This is perhaps when the much need maturity in the side will come to the fore, in good time and we will be able to acheive this within games, rather than a week to week basis.

As for Jeff, he probably needs to learn to develop a few more strings to his bow - you don't see players like Cyril out of the game because their sides not playing the way that best suits them - they find a way to stamp themselves on the game and change it's direction.  In this respect, I wish that the brains trust would give Gartlett a license to through himself into the middle of the ground from time to time like he did last season, which could be quite useful.

Had a look at the team that fronted the Hawks in rnd 11:

• In we have Stretch, Brayshaw, Weideman. (Out Trengove, Dawes, Wagner). 
• Hunt, Petracca and Oliver had only played a handful of games - now more adjusted to AFL footy

They are significant improvements on last time we played Hawks.

I like that we have some have some 'fresh' players as Vand, Oliver, Bugg and Weideman didn't go to Perth 2 weeks ago. 

An upset is on the cards!

Both Harmes and M Jones are on even ground at the moment - I still have nightmares of Jones missing Dawes from 30 metres away under no pressure.  For all his improvements he is still an ordinary kick.

M Jones' elite running puts him above Harmes for mine.

M Jones gets to more contests and provides outside run. Harmes doesn't. They both turn it over. So M Jones does more, IMO.

Last time we played Hawthorn Garlett had his infamous 'ducking' incident. I didn't think it was as bad as it was made out but expect the Hawks to remind him of it over and again.

Harmes probably stay in because of his courageous mark. Have to reward that commitment.

Would love this to be the day that the young Dees finally arrive with a win over the reigning champs.

No biggie if Hogan is out - Pedo kicked three against the Hawks when they beat us by 100 pts last year so the Hawks are basically Pedo's bunnies.

Noticeable for mine that we stay outside the contest more and we have 1 or 2 goalkeepers to stop the quick over the top goals.

Yep. Tom McDonald doing a fantastic job with this and those immensely frustrating goals where there were 2-3 free players over the back have basically dried up.

oliver has been in the 2s for weeks petracca has still only played a few games brayshaw a couple of very ordinary efforts how can you think they are more adjusted to afl footy

 

hope the sook is out this week might get a forward in who plays the team and not his ego

Spot on bmfc - the prospect of seeing Weideman being monstered by Chip worries me greatly - hope it doesn't bugger the Weeds development.  Would have preferred to see us go in with a team of older, harder, types - Grimes playing defensive 1/2 forward against Mitchell etc.   

Just hope & pray that Roos/Goodwin have made the right call in playing the babies against possibly the most disciplined, well-drilled team of the modern era........

Weid this week is just wrong IMO. Bring him in sure but not against one of the most experienced top end teams in the AFL.

Would have left Dawes as he as he can at least compete and bring ball to ground for crumbers and has the big match experience. Played ok higher up ground last week also without being great. As well as reasonable tackle/inferred pressure on the ball carrier inside 50. Seemed to be stronger through the core last week from recent match time also.

We gain nothing except .... less experience up forward AND probably less pressure inside our own 50. Hogan provides virtually no pressure and will probably be only 'just' going if he makes the squad. Jeffy, well who knows what he'll bring from week to week he is so inconsistent and unreliable. He might kick 3 and do nothing else or he might lay 2 or 3 tackles and do not much else. The Hawks will have a field day rebounding out of our forward 50, even if we get reasonable entry numbers. No Dawes to relieve up forward for ruck duties either so Watts will be expected to do even more work here.

The obvious in for mine was Pedo for Hogan if Hogan is only 80% or so. Leave Weids to debut against the Blues, not the Hawks. Pedo a great foil for Big Maxy and the 3rd best contested mark in the team. Can play forward or Back as well. If Hulk is 100% and doesn't need managing then would still go Pedo for Dawes.

Weid "IN" , Dawes "OUT" (no Pedo) is a huge gamble against the best team in the AFL.

Are we also saying stretch/nev to cyril/puopolo? Stretch in a purely defensive/rebound role!?? Don't like that either.

If Cyril misses we might get within 3 to 4 goals if the gamble pays off. If it doesn't and Cyril's in then who knows. Could get ugly by the time the siren sounds.
