MATCH PREVIEW AND TEAM SELECTION - Round 19

Featured Replies

The Gold Coast midfield can only be described in one word:  poo.

If we can't get another 60 odd inside 50's this week then something's wrong.

We should run away with a 8-9 goal win never coming out of second gear.

What should happen and what probably will actually happen could be two completely different things!!!

and knowing Melbourne it probably will.

Come off it, Wise - you and I both know that that was a flawed stat....

Flawed stat or not, my point is that we shouldn't lose to this side at all.  Our midfield should overpower them with Gawny giving us first use.

An almost full strength side against a depleted midfield missing Ablett, Prestia, Rischitelli, Hall, O'Meara and Swallow.

A loss here would be nearing Essendon round 2 territory.

I just want the 4 points, but we should be winning by 6 goals.

I would have thought our defence needs serious bolstering. Not sure if anyone noticed how many goals the GC talls kicked last week. It was plenty. Our weedy defence will get pummelled if GC play like that again. OMac can't play. I assume Garland will come in. As much as I am not a fan of Garland, for this game he is a much better option than OMac.

and Garlo shut down Peter Wright last time we played

At this time of year and given Caseys finals prospects, I wonder if selections would ever be made with the VFL team in mind?

This is a danger game.  We lose this and the season is a total failure and we may not get off 7 wins.

No,  that's not until Rnd 23.

What have they learnt from the Essendon game? Overwhelming favourites. A depleted opposition. The game being played on our home deck. We should win by 10 goals. This will be an interesting game.

This is exactly what i have been thinking about this game.

Should be ours on a platter. Problem is, we still seem to have one effort game followed by absolute tripe. Guess which one we are due for..............

Think we should win.

Have a look at the midfield matchups. We should win this by over 100.

Gesus we are way to precious, one game is a confidence killer and he'll never make? He's good enough, will become good enough or not.

Where did I say he will never make it?

To quote Sam Newman "If Melbourne don't win this they've wasted their season". I agree with him. We're playing on our home ground against a teaming missing it's top 5-6 midfielders. If we can't win this freebie we may as well give up. Hopefully the players learnt from the Essendon embarrassment and we win this by 60+

Get it done Dees!

..............na he will be there, in the stands, watching his future team go around, and getting a feel for his future home ground....

Didn't catch last week's game mate?

Actually no I didn't Stuie, I have been and will continue to be away from home on deoployment with the Navy for a few more months, so I am not afforded the luxuries of a TV or radio on game day.
All I have access to is the stats and sporaddic score updates.

I see that he kicked 2 and played alright, I just don't like him in the team and I don't think he will be in the team next year so would rather start getting some senior experience into the young guys.

Oscar McDonald would need to lose a limb in order to miss a game at this rate.

You're still away Zorky?! Long stretch mate, best wishes to ya!

I take a philosophical approach with Dawes. Would think he'd be 50/50 at best to be around next year, and even if he is I wouldn't expect him to play many games, but I'm big on picking a team on form and he played well enough last week to get another game this week IMO. The young guys just aren't quite ready. The plan with the Weed seems to give him a development year at VFL level, but I wouldn't mind seeing Hulett some time before the end of the season.

On paper we should win this easily, but it all depends on which Melbourne turns up.

We score over 21 points a game (71) less with Dawes in the team than without him (92) , and over 31 points a game (102) less than with Pedersen in the team. We have to get our forward line setup right this week, and in my mind that means no Dawes.

I've always maintained that  Dawes is a very defensive 4 ward who doesn't kick goals & your stats confirm it.

I'd rather they play Hullet & blood him like they did with OMac. They obviously have marked Grime ' s papers. Don't understand y some papers with very obvious flaws get chosen ahead of youth. Not a fan of Matt Jones either.

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
